Hello, hello.

2

:

I'm Katie and welcome to Retro

Made, your pop culture rewind.

3

:

We're going to go back to October

of:

4

:

to you family drama with a fantasy

backdrop called Three Wishes.

5

:

This is with our everyman, Patrick Swayze.

6

:

And since I went solo for last

episode with a lesser known Kurt

7

:

Russell film doing the same with

Patrick this week I'm very curious

8

:

if you guys have heard of this.

9

:

I will just say at the top, I

don't know why it's less known.

10

:

It's quite good.

11

:

So if you're new to the show, welcome.

12

:

I cover retro movies and the TV, music,

and other pop culture of the time.

13

:

If you've been on this journey with me,

thank you so much for tuning in again.

14

:

And this is your official reminder.

15

:

If you have not rated or reviewed the

show, please, please, please do so.

16

:

Hey, you can do it while

you listen to this episode.

17

:

Hint, hint, hint, hint.

18

:

For those of you that are new, we

start by opening a time capsule.

19

:

So we're going to open the time capsule

from October of:

20

:

movie came out to kind of set the stage

for what was going on in the world.

21

:

Now in this season everyman.

22

:

Kurt Russell and Patrick Stasey.

23

:

We've covered a lot of films.

24

:

We still have a few to go before

the season ends, but we're

25

:

getting to the point where we've

covered a lot of the seasons.

26

:

In terms of Nielsen rated top shows

and this particular season we've

27

:

covered go back to the Tu Wong Foo

episode and that's the 95, 96 season.

28

:

Prime time, so as promised, actually from

the winter people episode last episode,

29

:

I'm going to actually spend some time

talking about 1 particular TV show.

30

:

That is near and dear to me.

31

:

The famous sitcom Roseanne,

and it was actually in the top.

32

:

Of this particular time.

33

:

And as a little added tie in, one of the

actors in Roseanne is also in this movie.

34

:

So we'll get to that.

35

:

Okay.

36

:

So Roseanne, now please stay with me.

37

:

I know that she can be a bit of a

controversial figure, but just stay

38

:

with me, go on this ride with me.

39

:

I'm sure There are many of you out

there like me who adore this show.

40

:

If you need a little refresher,

it is a series that is

41

:

centered on the Connor family.

42

:

They are an American working class

family that is struggling to get by

43

:

on a very limited household income.

44

:

Dan and Roseanne and their

3 young children, Becky,

45

:

Darlene and DJ, they live.

46

:

At 714 Delaware street in the drab

fictional town of Lanford, Illinois.

47

:

Now, later in the series, they do have a

4th child that they named Jerry Garcia.

48

:

Connor cute, right?

49

:

We'll get to that.

50

:

Now, this show ran for 9 seasons

on ABC from:

51

:

And then there was a season 10 revival.

52

:

In 2018, we'll get into

this a little bit now.

53

:

So season 11 was renewed after that

10th season, but if, if you guys can,

54

:

I know that seems like forever ago.

55

:

It's like both seems like yesterday and

also a million years ago,:

56

:

famously fired for some incredibly racist

remarks and she had just kind of gone

57

:

off the, off the deep end on Twitter.

58

:

This was not an isolated incident

because there were several controversial

59

:

tweets insane conspiracy theories.

60

:

So this was not a 1 off, but

that was and as we'll talk about

61

:

it, she wasn't necessarily the

easiest person to work with either.

62

:

So they fired her and smartly.

63

:

They actually pivoted.

64

:

I mean, you fire the

main person on the show.

65

:

So the show was canceled, but

nobody else did anything wrong.

66

:

The cast, the crew.

67

:

So they pivoted and they retooled the show

and it went on to continue as the Connors.

68

:

So technically a spinoff,

but it was basically just the

69

:

same show without Roseanne.

70

:

And I think.

71

:

As of this recording, so it's

June now, but in its 6th and

72

:

final season, maybe it's over.

73

:

I should have checked.

74

:

Maybe it's maybe it has had its finale.

75

:

I have not caught up.

76

:

I have not watched the, the very,

very, very end of the 6th season,

77

:

but I think it's its final season.

78

:

Anyway, so in the new retooled show

Roseanne has died of an opioid overdose.

79

:

Overdose and Dan in the

final episode or fine.

80

:

I'm sorry.

81

:

The final season remarries to

Katie Seagal, Peggy from Al Bundy

82

:

and Peggy married with children.

83

:

Peggy from married with

children took me on it.

84

:

She's in tons of stuff, but I love her.

85

:

So I think that was really cute.

86

:

They had him remarry her.

87

:

Now in the new show, I think in the,

the 10th season when Roseanne was still

88

:

in the 2018 version, they spoke up.

89

:

Here's how they addressed Jerry,

the 4th child not being there.

90

:

He was like working away on

like an oil rig or something.

91

:

I want to say.

92

:

So he wasn't in the show, but they

briefly addressed it the rest of the time.

93

:

He's never mentioned.

94

:

So he's not a part of it.

95

:

It's almost as if they

didn't have the 4th kid.

96

:

Additionally, Jackie.

97

:

In the show has a son.

98

:

Named Andy, but in the resurrected

version of it, he's nowhere to

99

:

be found and is not mentioned.

100

:

So those couple things

kind of irked me about the.

101

:

The newer version of the show, but for the

rest of the conversation, I really would

102

:

like to stick to the original version,

the original 9 seasons that went through

103

:

97 although the Connors is quite good.

104

:

It's it's not doesn't have quite quite

the that the original Roseanne had.

105

:

So, the IMDb shows that this has a

7 out of 10, which is pretty good.

106

:

And I will say that it did receive

positive reviews for its realistic

107

:

portrayal of a working class

American family with 2 parents

108

:

working outside of the home.

109

:

And that the 2 lead characters, Dan and

Roseanne were noticeably overweight, but

110

:

that their weight wasn't necessarily.

111

:

Like a target for the jokes necessarily.

112

:

It was just that's who these people are.

113

:

Okay.

114

:

So we didn't really see that on TV.

115

:

Really, we still don't see

it at all with a couple of

116

:

exceptions that I can think of.

117

:

It was the number 1 show.

118

:

From 1989 to 1990, that was its 2nd

season, number 1 show, it remained

119

:

in the top 4 for 6 out of its 9

original seasons and in the top 20

120

:

for 8 of those one particular episode.

121

:

And I can picture it too.

122

:

It's called the name of the episode is

called a stash from the past is where

123

:

they find their old dope and get high.

124

:

And it's it's a really, really, really

because they're like children in the 60s.

125

:

Now they're adults in the 90s,

raising kids, but that was in 93.

126

:

And that.

127

:

Particular episode was ranked

number 21 on TV guides.

128

:

100 greatest episodes of all

time, pretty high praise, right?

129

:

And then in 2002 TV guide also did

some other rankings and Roseanne

130

:

was ranked number 35 of the top

50 greatest shows of all time.

131

:

And it was in let's see, they

did some more rankings in:

132

:

and it was ranked number 32.

133

:

Of 60 best series of all time.

134

:

Now, John Goodman's character, Dan Connor

was ranked number 13 in TV guides list

135

:

of the 50 greatest TV dads of all time.

136

:

And I think we can all agree.

137

:

We all love Dan.

138

:

Dan's the best.

139

:

So the opening credits is pretty famous.

140

:

It's kind of the trademark view around the

kitchen table and throughout the They're

141

:

doing different activities at the table.

142

:

So, let's see, seasons 1 and 2,

they're eating dessert seasons 3

143

:

and 4, they're playing cards, and

season 5, they're eating pizza.

144

:

Season six and seven,

they're eating Chinese food.

145

:

And then the last two of the regular

seasons, eight and nine, was pretty cool.

146

:

They did like a morphing

of them over the years.

147

:

Starting with their first like, it's

sort of like the portraits you would

148

:

have in the hallway of a family home.

149

:

And then it morphed from, and

Roseanne started and ended it

150

:

because she, she's famous for

having a lot of different looks.

151

:

Over the show, so it just

kind of morphed into that.

152

:

It was pretty cool.

153

:

And I mean, even now, I think

it's, it's a pretty cool effect.

154

:

Several years later.

155

:

And then the blues traveler guy

did the most recent season the last

156

:

show was a little bit different.

157

:

It had lyrics uh, john popper.

158

:

He is the blues, blues traveler guy.

159

:

So he actually was in

an episode or maybe two.

160

:

I think maybe just the one episode

where he plays like a former bandmate

161

:

of Dan's called Stingray Wilson.

162

:

And that was in season eight.

163

:

If you guys remember that, that

episode with the Blues Traveler guy,

164

:

he's, he's a, he's a wild one too.

165

:

Okay.

166

:

So this series Roseanne was

created by Matt Williams.

167

:

And you guys do know who he is.

168

:

He also created or produced Home

Improvement, The Cosby Show, A

169

:

Different World, and some films such

as What Women Want, Wild Hearts Can't

170

:

Be Broken, and Where the Heart Is.

171

:

So that's who Matt Williams

has created, produced.

172

:

I'm sure you've seen these names.

173

:

All over everywhere, Chuck Lorre,

Marcy Carsey, Tom Warner, and then

174

:

that was for the original run.

175

:

And then the later, the later revival

seasons, we have Bruce Helford, Whitney

176

:

Cummings, Sarah Gilbert and Tony

Hernandez and directing shows like this.

177

:

There's usually a lot of different

directors, so that's the case for.

178

:

Most of the seasons, however, John

Pasquin directed the vast majority of

179

:

the episodes for seasons 1, 2, and 10.

180

:

And he's also familiar in that he also

directed many episodes of Family Ties,

181

:

Growing Pains, Alice, and New Heart.

182

:

Alright, so everybody knows Roseanne Barr.

183

:

Is our lead character as Roseanne

Connor, John Goodman playing Dan and

184

:

Roseanne's sister, Jackie Harris is

played by the lovely Laurie Metcalf.

185

:

And she's just.

186

:

Brilliant in this.

187

:

She's my favorite character.

188

:

I feel like I, I relate to Jackie

the most and then the kids.

189

:

So the oldest daughter is Becky

and this is really interesting.

190

:

Actually.

191

:

This is one of those shows that

really had fun with changing the

192

:

actress of the character who played

someone without, it's like they did

193

:

it and then they poked fun at it.

194

:

It was just like, there's

a new Becky, but so Lisey.

195

:

Goranson was the original and she played

Becky from seasons one through five and

196

:

then she came back for season eight.

197

:

And then, then she came back

for the revivals, but the

198

:

seasons where Lacey was not.

199

:

Played by Becky, it was Sarah Chalk

and you guys all know who she is.

200

:

Oh, I forget the character's name,

but she's probably most famous for

201

:

scrubs, but she's in tons of stuff.

202

:

You guys know who she is.

203

:

And I liked some of the things that

they did to poke fun at having 2 Beckys.

204

:

They say on the show something

about Bewitched having two

205

:

Darrens and how that was so dumb.

206

:

How do they think people aren't going

to notice that there's two Darrens?

207

:

And then there's a time

where after Lacey comes back.

208

:

So she's been off the show for a

couple of years since she comes back.

209

:

It's not addressed other

than a couple of times.

210

:

One time, Roseanne, another time, Darlene

says, where the hell have you been?

211

:

She's like, why do people

keep asking me this?

212

:

Let's see.

213

:

Oh, Sarah Chalk actually made a cameo.

214

:

So the second Becky makes the cameo just

as a random mom with trick or treaters

215

:

in one of the Halloween episodes.

216

:

And she says something like, Oh,

this looks like a cute house or a fun

217

:

Halloween house or something like that.

218

:

And then they go to Disney world.

219

:

As they do back in, back in

the day, that was like a thing

220

:

because Disney owns I don't know.

221

:

Did they own ABC or something?

222

:

I don't know.

223

:

Something like that.

224

:

They go to Disney World and second

Becky is there for this particular.

225

:

So there's one season, I think maybe

it was season eight where it was

226

:

both Becky's had different episodes,

which was a little interesting.

227

:

So the Disney World one, Roseanne

is like, Oh, isn't it nice

228

:

that you're here this week?

229

:

Something like that.

230

:

And then there's a play

on the Patty Duke show.

231

:

You know, how, how sometimes

sitcoms will have like little.

232

:

Like buttons or a little little scenes

at the end of the show and this one was

233

:

a little skit about patty duke I think

it was even in black and white of the

234

:

two becky's they're like two becky's

they're nearly identical becky's Which

235

:

must be the Patty Duke theme song.

236

:

So anyway, that's the two Beckys.

237

:

I actually did not like

Sarah Chalk in this at all.

238

:

She was probably the weakest actress.

239

:

I just didn't, I don't know.

240

:

I did not like how she played Becky.

241

:

I really liked the original Becky.

242

:

Sarah Gilbert plays Darlene, and then

Michael Fishman plays DJ, the youngest,

243

:

the, the boy, and DJ stands for David

Jacob, and what's interesting about the

244

:

character DJ is that the pilot episode

had a different actor playing DJ.

245

:

Then the rest of the run.

246

:

So Michael Fishman plays him the entire

series, except for the pilot episode.

247

:

And his name was Sal Barone.

248

:

Apparently I also read that Macaulay

Culkin auditioned for the role

249

:

of DJ, but the role was actually

given to Michael Fishman because

250

:

he looked so much more like.

251

:

Roseanne and the family

just had, had that look.

252

:

And he was really good.

253

:

I will say when DJ's little,

I think he's pretty good.

254

:

And I don't really like kids in things.

255

:

Like they're just not, I,

they're usually not good.

256

:

And the Connor kids are really good.

257

:

I think which probably helps

my enjoyment of the show.

258

:

However, the exception to that

is somehow Michael Fishman's

259

:

acting gets worse over time.

260

:

So as he grows up, it's.

261

:

It doesn't hit.

262

:

I don't, I don't like it.

263

:

So he and Sarah Chalk

don't, don't like them.

264

:

But then the rest of the cast,

so that's the main family.

265

:

Then Natalie West plays Roseanne's

really good friend, Crystal.

266

:

And she ends up marrying Dan's dad.

267

:

Played by Ned Beatty, Ed O'Connor,

or not O'Connor, just Ed Connor.

268

:

He marries Crystal later.

269

:

That's kind of a whole big

controversy of the show.

270

:

Bev Harris is Roseanne and Jackie's mom.

271

:

She's played by Estelle Parsons.

272

:

And then we have Mark and David Healy.

273

:

So, this is a show where Becky,

the oldest daughter, goes out with

274

:

and ends up marrying the cool you

know, bad guy that the Connors hate.

275

:

Dan and Roseanne hate him,

but they end up, they, I think

276

:

she's like 17 when they elope.

277

:

Anyway, that's Mark Healy, and

he is played by Glenn Quinn,

278

:

who's really good looking.

279

:

he actually passed away.

280

:

We'll talk a little bit

more about that in a second.

281

:

He's an Irish actor and you wouldn't

know it because he doesn't, you

282

:

know, he's, he's able to do the

Chicago and accent pretty well.

283

:

And then his little brother.

284

:

David is played by Johnny Galecki.

285

:

And you guys all know who he is.

286

:

He's been in tons of things, but like

most recently in Leonard in the big bang

287

:

theory, but what's also interesting here.

288

:

So not only are the two brothers

dating the two sisters, so

289

:

Becky and Mark are together and

David and Darlene are together.

290

:

And then over the series, David

ends up sort of being like Like an

291

:

adopted son, he ends up living with

the Connors because his mom is not

292

:

a great mom, kind of an abusive mom.

293

:

But when we originally meet

this character, Mark's little

294

:

brother, his name is Kevin.

295

:

And then the next time we meet

him, and then for the rest of

296

:

the series, his name's David.

297

:

We get a hilarious portrayal

of Leon, played by Martin Mull.

298

:

Originally, and so he, he's in it a lot.

299

:

So originally, he's the boss of.

300

:

Roseanne when she works at the,

so Roseanne over the course of the

301

:

show has so many different jobs.

302

:

One of which is a waitress at a mall

diner called Rod Bell's for them.

303

:

Yeah.

304

:

Rod Bell's department store.

305

:

And there's a diner in it and Martin mall

and Roseanne are just like, they have this

306

:

This relationship, they hate each other,

but then they end up being business

307

:

partners later when Roseanne and Jackie

and Sandra Bernhardt's character,

308

:

which we'll get to Nancy, they go

in and buy their own little diner.

309

:

They call it the land for

lunchbox and Richard mall as Leon.

310

:

Becomes one of their partners because

these ladies don't really know

311

:

how to run a business and he does.

312

:

So anyway, his character is gay and his.

313

:

Partner on the show is

played by Fred Willard.

314

:

His name is Scott on the show, but

they're, they're hilarious on this.

315

:

So Fred Willard and Martin mall both

straight, but they play these gay

316

:

characters on Roseanne and it's hilarious.

317

:

And then Sandra Bernhardt

plays Nancy, also a friend.

318

:

So it's a small town.

319

:

Everybody's kind of friends.

320

:

Everybody grew up, went

to high school together.

321

:

And Nancy, who is originally

dating and marries.

322

:

Tom Arnold's character, Arnie, who's

like the wacky, crazy, like weird

323

:

friend of Dan that everybody knows.

324

:

He's kind of, you know, it's Arnie

who, so Tom Arnold at that time was

325

:

actually married to Roseanne Barr.

326

:

So that's probably why he was

on the show, but Arnie and Nancy

327

:

get together and they're married.

328

:

And then when they get divorced, she

realizes that she's into women.

329

:

And then we get all these guest

stars of people that she's dated.

330

:

Like Morgan Fairchild is

one of her girlfriends and

331

:

everybody's like, how are you?

332

:

And like Muriel Hemingway.

333

:

Is that right?

334

:

Yeah, they're it's like how Nancy,

how are you getting all these

335

:

like super attractive women?

336

:

Anyway, that's kind of funny.

337

:

Let's see.

338

:

Who else do we have?

339

:

Oh, please don't forget the George

Clooney was also in Roseanne first season.

340

:

Maybe the 2nd, but he plays Booker.

341

:

I love that.

342

:

Name, first of all, and he originally

plays their boss or supervisor.

343

:

I should say when they

work at Wellman's plastics.

344

:

So Jackie crystal, like all the

friends all work at Wellman's

345

:

together in this plastics factory.

346

:

And he's their supervisor.

347

:

And then Jackie ends up

dating him for a while.

348

:

Because why wouldn't you?

349

:

Yeah, and then their friends, they have

some other friends in this town, Chucky

350

:

and Annemarie, and they are probably

one of only a couple of black characters

351

:

that we meet, their friends the reason

I bring that up is because, you know,

352

:

It does come up in some of the episodes

there's because they cover kind of

353

:

hard to discuss topics like racism.

354

:

Anyway, Chuckie is played

by James Pickens jr.

355

:

And you guys know him.

356

:

Well, from a number of things, but he

played Dr Richard Weber on Grey's Anatomy

357

:

and then Ann Marie, his wife is played by.

358

:

Adela Barnes, and then another 1

of the waitresses at that diner

359

:

with Martin mall playing Leon,

the Rockwell's diner is waitress.

360

:

Bonnie.

361

:

I always really liked her character too.

362

:

So Bonnie, she's that blonde like,

looks like she's um, like a truckers.

363

:

Not a trucker, a bike, a biker's

woman, you know, like she

364

:

kind of has that look to her.

365

:

Well, turns out she in real life.

366

:

So she's played by Bonnie Bramlett.

367

:

So that's her, her real name.

368

:

She was a backup singer

for Crosby, Stills and Nash

369

:

.

And in fact, her, she, she calls him this, her old man on the show

370

:

is actually played by David Crosby.

371

:

So he's one of the guest stars.

372

:

So that's fun.

373

:

And then Shelly Winters plays Nana

Mary and she's one of my favorites too.

374

:

She's hilarious.

375

:

, so Nana Mary is Jackie and

Roseanne's grandmother.

376

:

So she's, she's in this.

377

:

And then I alluded to some guest stars.

378

:

There are so many I don't, I don't even

know where to start with the guest stars,

379

:

but some that had a longer roles or more

of a recurring role would be Jim Varney.

380

:

Do you guys remember when it's

probably not the best season, but

381

:

once once they win the lottery.

382

:

Jackie and Roseanne go on this

quest of being rich, essentially,

383

:

and they meet this prince, prince

something or other, I forget.

384

:

But it's, he's played by Jim Varney.

385

:

So that's probably one

of the most famous ones.

386

:

Then some of the others, Sharon Stone

plays like, Hers is kind of funny.

387

:

Like a trailer park, trashy lady Morgan

Fairchild, Florence Henderson, Ellen

388

:

DeGeneres, Loretta Lynn, Tim Curry.

389

:

I kind of forgot about him.

390

:

He, he scams them out of

some money, Stephen Root.

391

:

Christopher Lloyd, French Stuart,

Jerry Springer, Marlowe, Thomas,

392

:

Steven Seagal, James Brolin.

393

:

He plays like the son of, again, once

they're rich I think Roseanne is actually

394

:

like, there's a period of time where Dan's

kind of out of the picture for a while.

395

:

And Roseanne is like romantically

interested in the son of the

396

:

The Really Rich Wellman, and

it's played by James Brolin.

397

:

It's quite lovely because they're

like, God, you're good looking.

398

:

And he is.

399

:

And then we have Dan Florek, Toby McGuire,

Brad Garrett plays a lone officer.

400

:

Wayne Newton plays himself.

401

:

Neil Patrick Harris, Ed

Begley Jr., Joan Collins.

402

:

Joseph Gordon Levitt plays a

super annoying friend of DJ's.

403

:

DJ can't stand him.

404

:

And actually, I think he's

the son of Florence Henderson.

405

:

Or maybe I'm confusing another kid.

406

:

Paul Feig, Vicky Lawrence plays an

old flame of Dan's and that sparks

407

:

a fight between Dan and Roseanne.

408

:

Mariel Hemingway plays another

love interest of Nancy.

409

:

Danny Masterson, Tracy Lourdes, Ashley

Johnson, Dawn Wells, Jenna Elfman,

410

:

Rhea Sehorne, Bruce Willis, Fred

Thompson, and Jack McGee, who we've

411

:

talked about on this show a few times.

412

:

So lots of guest stars.

413

:

I could have gone on for five more minutes

about guest stars, but so I love this show

414

:

and so did the award shows the Emmys in

93 both Roseanne Barr and Laurie Metcalf,

415

:

who plays Jackie one Emmys for their

respective categories and then the series.

416

:

Was nominated for 27 different

Emmys overall through its series and

417

:

despite it's getting a ton of critical

praise and the super high ratings.

418

:

The show itself was never

nominated for best comedy series.

419

:

Which I did not realize, but

they did get some Golden Globes.

420

:

So the series won the Golden Globe award

for best television series, musical or

421

:

comedy in 93, as did Roseanne and John

Goodman for their respective categories.

422

:

And then the series itself also

won both a Peabody award in 92.

423

:

And a People's Choice Award for Favorite

New Television Comedy Program in 89.

424

:

And then Roseanne Barr herself

won 5 more People's Choice Awards.

425

:

For let's see, female favorite female

performer in a new TV program for

426

:

80 in 89 favorite female all around

entertainer in 90 favorite female TV

427

:

performer in 90, 94 and 95 and then

once the TV land awards came about.

428

:

The whole cast in 2008, except for

Lori Metcalf, reunited at the TV Land

429

:

Awards to receive the Innovator Award.

430

:

And in their acceptance speech, they

did honor their late cast member,

431

:

Glenn Quinn, who we talked about as

playing Mark Healy, Becky's husband.

432

:

He was born in Dublin, and he passed away.

433

:

In 2002, he was only 32 years

old and unfortunately he

434

:

passed of a heroin overdose.

435

:

So that's really sad.

436

:

I really liked his

character a lot on the show.

437

:

So that's kind of a bummer.

438

:

And if you guys were watchers of

this, you probably love it for many

439

:

reasons, but some of their holiday

shows, those are by far my favorites

440

:

every year they had a spectacular

Halloween special and Thanksgiving.

441

:

It was awesome.

442

:

You guys, I hope that I'm not

the only one who loves this.

443

:

Please let me know.

444

:

Roseanne has been married several times.

445

:

All three of her ex husbands.

446

:

Bill Pentland, Tom Arnold, and

Ben Thomas have made at least

447

:

one guest appearance on the show.

448

:

Supposedly both Roseanne and Laurie

Metcalf had a crush on John Goodman.

449

:

And then those of you who watch the show

a lot will, will know what I'm talking

450

:

about, but there was one episode in

season five, all about the chicken shirt.

451

:

So that's actually another thing I really

like about this show is it not only

452

:

seems normal, but they re, they rewear

clothes like a normal person would.

453

:

So it's not a new outfit

every time we see them.

454

:

So I think those are nice touches,

but there's this shirt, this

455

:

is white oversized t shirt with

a chicken and an egg on it.

456

:

And usually it's wearing worn by Roseanne,

but there's an episode that in different

457

:

scenes, a different cast member wears it.

458

:

So all 5 of the different cast

members are seen wearing it.

459

:

And I don't know if this is true or not,

but that that was done in part to annoy.

460

:

Tom Arnold at that time was her ex

husband who apparently hated the shirt.

461

:

So that's kind of fun.

462

:

Now it was not originally called Roseanne.

463

:

Life and stuff.

464

:

Can you guys imagine that?

465

:

No.

466

:

I think Roseanne is way better.

467

:

David and Mark are brothers, right?

468

:

So Johnny Galecki and Glenn.

469

:

Quinn.

470

:

David never calls them Dan and Roseanne.

471

:

It's always Mr.

472

:

or Mrs.

473

:

Conner.

474

:

But the opposite is true of Mark.

475

:

The older brother never calls them Mrs.

476

:

Conner.

477

:

He says Dan or Roseanne.

478

:

That's interesting, eh?

479

:

There's an episode where DJ is

supposed to kiss a girl in his class.

480

:

In a, you know, like a

kid's theater performance,

481

:

whatever show they were doing.

482

:

I don't know if it was

Romeo and Juliet or what.

483

:

And he didn't want to kiss the girl.

484

:

And it turns out that he didn't want

to kiss her because she was black.

485

:

And so they explored that on

this episode and her name in the

486

:

episode, the girl's name is Gina.

487

:

Well, as it turns out, those of you who

know, know where I'm going with this.

488

:

That's who he ends up married

to in the revival of the series.

489

:

It's that same girl and they have a

daughter named Mary but Gina's not

490

:

really in it because she is stationed in,

I want to say Iraq, maybe Afghanistan.

491

:

She's in the military.

492

:

So she's stationed somewhere else.

493

:

So DJ sort of acts as a single

father in it, but so that's a

494

:

nice little closed loop situation.

495

:

, so Jackie has a ton of

boyfriends on the show.

496

:

One of whom is named Fisher.

497

:

Not to be confused with Booker

but that particular relationship

498

:

on the show ends violently.

499

:

Fisher is physically abusive to Jackie

and Dan beats him up and gets arrested and

500

:

it's, it's a, they somehow make it funny.

501

:

Like an abusive episode is funny.

502

:

Well, the actress and

actor who played them.

503

:

So Lori Metcalf and Matt Roth, who played

Fisher, they actually started dating.

504

:

In 1993, after Ralph's run of the

show was complete, they married in

505

:

2005 and we're together until 2014.

506

:

I did not know that fun tidbit.

507

:

Okay, so I guess I have to touch

on the controversy that happened.

508

:

So Roseanne, I think she's kind of known

509

:

for having some mental health

struggles and she always has

510

:

been a bit out there and.

511

:

Notorious for behaving badly and just.

512

:

I don't know, behind the scenes of

the show, cast and crew associated,

513

:

you know, and with interviews

with executives, they actually had

514

:

previously considered dumping her from

the show because there was so much.

515

:

She just caused a lot of trouble throwing

temper tantrums, screaming at people,

516

:

locking herself in the dressing room,

storming off, threatening to quit.

517

:

So just, you know, a little bit of a

diva, I guess, you know, a little too

518

:

big for her britches, shall we say.

519

:

But also.

520

:

Yeah, I think, and I don't think she's

really hidden the fact that she struggles

521

:

with, with some mental health issues.

522

:

The producers when interviewed, I

think it was Marcy Carsey, those two.

523

:

They considered her to be

a nightmare to work with.

524

:

And so all of these things probably

didn't help her cause when she made a

525

:

pretty significant mistake on Twitter.

526

:

But, like I said, it wasn't

an isolated incident.

527

:

She was like, leading up to this, you

know, exhibiting a lot of self destructive

528

:

behavior with lots of conspiracy theories

and it wasn't her 1st racist tweet either.

529

:

So I say all that to, so she got fired.

530

:

And I'm glad that the show went on

because no, the rest of the cast

531

:

and crew deserved to have the show.

532

:

And they, even when they re

resurrected the show, they were

533

:

already worried about her behavior.

534

:

So they made a deal with her to, they're

like, listen, you got to stay off Twitter.

535

:

And she was like, okay.

536

:

I will, and then she didn't.

537

:

So they're like, you know, we gave you

chances and, and yeah, you effed it up.

538

:

Sorry, lady.

539

:

It's your fault.

540

:

But I will say, having said

all that, I love this show.

541

:

I'm able to look past that.

542

:

Right?

543

:

So I think that Roseanne is an

extremely well written and acted

544

:

sitcom about a tight knit family.

545

:

That's working class.

546

:

They tackle some extremely topical

social issues, but in a funny.

547

:

And smart and innovative way.

548

:

And I regularly watch this.

549

:

I consider it a comfort show and

she's always been controversial.

550

:

You know, I know I get it.

551

:

Like some people I get it.

552

:

But part of the reason that the show

is so beloved is because she and

553

:

the show weren't afraid to tackle

those hard issues about, you know, we

554

:

talked about a few of them now, but.

555

:

Abuse, abortion, gay characters, front and

center, mental health, depression, racism,

556

:

classism, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

557

:

So like a lot of real things, it

wasn't just like a surface level

558

:

sitcom, but they tackled it in

a really realistic, funny way.

559

:

And I think that's hard to do.

560

:

, I can't really wrap my

head around someone that.

561

:

early on.

562

:

She went from championing these types

of issues to devolving like really

563

:

rapidly into some pretty dark places.

564

:

But like I said, I'm still able to watch

the show and very much enjoy the show.

565

:

And aside from when DJ gets a little

older, he's like, not, not a great

566

:

kid actor, but it's a genuine show.

567

:

It's a funny show.

568

:

And a lot of times those

two things are hard.

569

:

To combine.

570

:

And I think that's a little bit

of the magic here with Roseanne.

571

:

It might be in my top five, but if

not in the top five, it's definitely

572

:

in my top 10 sitcoms of all time.

573

:

I frigging love it.

574

:

And here's where you guys can watch it.

575

:

I watched it on cozy TV.

576

:

I think it's on CMT too, if you get that.

577

:

And then it streams on

Peacock and Sling TV.

578

:

So I would love to hear from

you guys, email me or comment on

579

:

YouTube or on the Facebook page.

580

:

When I post about this episode let

me know what you think of Roseanne.

581

:

Do you still watch it?

582

:

Do you like it?

583

:

Did you, did you hate it from the get go?

584

:

Let me know.

585

:

Okay, we're going to continue on now.

586

:

Thank you for indulging me

in my little Roseanne mini.

587

:

To continue to set the stage in

our time capsule from October

588

:

of 95, the top 10 billboards.

589

:

From that particular week, October, 27th.

590

:

Number one is Fantasy by Mariah Carey.

591

:

Number two, Gangsta's Paradise, which

is from the Dangerous Minds movie.

592

:

That's Coolio featuring LV.

593

:

Janet Jackson's Runaway is number three.

594

:

Number four is Kiss from a Rose by Seal.

595

:

I hate that song.

596

:

Number five is You Are Not

Alone by Michael Jackson.

597

:

And then you guys remember, I

totally forgot about this until now.

598

:

As I Lay Me Down by Sophie B.

599

:

Hawkins.

600

:

I know, you know, this song I

had forgotten about it until now.

601

:

Number seven.

602

:

I do not know what this is.

603

:

I looked it up.

604

:

It's pretty good.

605

:

It's called tell me by groove theory.

606

:

It's actually pretty good song.

607

:

Like an R it's a woman

singer and an R and B song.

608

:

It's pretty good.

609

:

But have no memory of that.

610

:

Hootie and the Blowfish only,

only want to be with you.

611

:

Hate it.

612

:

Cannot stand it.

613

:

Maybe for the first two times I heard

it, it was like, all right, yeah.

614

:

But it got played out so fast.

615

:

It's one of those for me anyway.

616

:

Number nine, it's called Back for

Good and the band is called Take That.

617

:

You know, the song it's like,

I want you back for good.

618

:

I want you back for good.

619

:

It's a lesser.

620

:

It's a boy band that's just lesser famous.

621

:

They didn't quite make it to the level of

Backstreet Boys and NSYNC at that time.

622

:

So that's what that's who Take That is.

623

:

And you guys know the song.

624

:

I know you do.

625

:

And then number 10, a very

famous song by Natalie Merchant.

626

:

It's her Carnival song.

627

:

Very good song.

628

:

It's just different.

629

:

Yeah, I quite like it.

630

:

Please.

631

:

Katie: Okay.

632

:

News and events from October of 1995.

633

:

Farm Aid 8, took me a minute

to do those roman numerals.

634

:

I did not realize there were eight of

these, but in 95 performers include Willie

635

:

Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young,

Hootie and the Blowfish, Dave Matthews

636

:

Band, John Conley, and Steve Earle.

637

:

Also at this time was the O.

638

:

J.

639

:

verdict.

640

:

Oh, man.

641

:

I think everyone was glued to

the TV for however long this

642

:

trial lasted, but in October, do

you guys remember what happened?

643

:

Hmm?

644

:

O.

645

:

J.

646

:

Simpson is found not guilty of the murder

of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman in L.

647

:

A.

648

:

Oy the Million Man March

was held in Washington, D.

649

:

C.

650

:

Was this the, I guess I thought it was

earlier, but yeah, 95 Million Man March.

651

:

So, it's over, there was over 830, 000

African American men that attended.

652

:

Maybe it was closer to a million

because that's not quite a million,

653

:

but that's what they called it.

654

:

, Quebec votes in a referendum

to remain a part of Canada.

655

:

I feel like that happens it's like Brexit.

656

:

And I feel like Texas is always

trying to leave the U S or California.

657

:

I like the like, we don't need you.

658

:

Well, Quebec decides.

659

:

We actually do need Canada apparently.

660

:

So that happened.

661

:

Now we have a few weddings and

deaths before we get into what

662

:

movies were happening at the time.

663

:

So Ted Danson of Cheers Mary's Academy

Award winning actress, Mary Steenburgen.

664

:

They're an adorable Hollywood couple.

665

:

Love them.

666

:

Also Family Ties actress, Meredith Baxter.

667

:

She weds screenwriter Michael Blodgett.

668

:

Do you guys know who the

first Miss America was?

669

:

Miss America from 1921.

670

:

Apparently that's the first time.

671

:

Her name is Margaret Gorman Cahill and

in October of:

672

:

Also, British prime minister died at 92.

673

:

Shit.

674

:

Which one was it?

675

:

It's Alec Douglas Holm.

676

:

He was the conservative party from

:

677

:

And.

678

:

Britain and he died at

age 92 Alec Douglas home

679

:

Also Paolo Gucci died

now who's Paolo Gucci.

680

:

There's a long line of the fashion

designers He's the son of Aldo

681

:

Gucci the grandson of Gucci.

682

:

Oh Gucci.

683

:

Who's the founder of the company?

684

:

So Paolo died at age 64 Shannon Hoon Is

Oh, you guys remember, you maybe don't

685

:

know the name, Shannon Hoon, Shannon was

the vocalist of the band blind melon and

686

:

he died of a drug overdose at age 28.

687

:

I, I loved that.

688

:

I love, I really liked blind

melon, the one, like the

689

:

song with the B in the field.

690

:

Yeah, you guys know what I'm talking

about, but his name was Shannon Hoon.

691

:

I don't think I knew that.

692

:

Okay.

693

:

Well, Three Wishes was

the, it's not Baudwell.

694

:

It's the number 27 movie in October.

695

:

I like, there were so many

movies that came out back in

696

:

the day in the mid nineties.

697

:

There were so many movies

that it came in at 27.

698

:

Now that doesn't sound that great, right?

699

:

However, to be fair, Mallrats was number

30 and Empire Records was number 40, like

700

:

that many movies and like in the theater

and during October and those both Mallrats

701

:

and Empire Records have cult followings.

702

:

Like they, I especially Empire

Records friggin love that movie.

703

:

So.

704

:

I don't know.

705

:

I guess the nineties were just

wild that way, but I don't

706

:

think anybody really knew.

707

:

I'm not sure what this, what the deal

is because 3 wishes is a good movie.

708

:

Anyway, but the movies that really

did top the box office at this time,

709

:

we have 7 get shorty assassins, dead

presidents, how to make an American quilt.

710

:

To die for devil in a blue dress

now and then Halloween, the curse

711

:

of Michael Myers, the big green

and dangerous minds, of course.

712

:

Let's get into the movie three wishes.

713

:

It was released on October 27th, 1995.

714

:

It's rated PG.

715

:

And I did have to double check that

because we get some Swayze butt in it.

716

:

And I don't know what the

rules are for these ratings.

717

:

It has a 6.

718

:

1 on IMDB and the director here is

Martha Coolidge, who also directed

719

:

Valley Girl and Real Genius.

720

:

And I thought, I wonder if she

is related to Jennifer Coolidge.

721

:

So I looked it up and she is.

722

:

They don't know each other though.

723

:

They've not met, but

they're somehow related.

724

:

They are both, you know, far relatives

of the late president, Calvin Coolidge.

725

:

That's funny.

726

:

And then, so that's the

director, Martha Coolidge.

727

:

We have writers Clifford Green

and Ellen Green, and they are a

728

:

husband and wife writing team.

729

:

They did divorce in 2004, though.

730

:

But they both, they, they, They

wrote on like Space Camp in:

731

:

and Bless This Child in 2000.

732

:

And then the other writer

is Elizabeth Anderson.

733

:

She doesn't have not very many

credits, but they do include the

734

:

1994 movie, Lassie and the Little

Return to the Sea in:

735

:

Our cast, we have our Patrick

Swayze, our, one of our ultimate

736

:

everyman, and he plays Jack McCloud.

737

:

And this is the third time that

he has played someone named Jack.

738

:

This movie, Black Dog and Fatherhood.

739

:

Did you know that?

740

:

Now you do.

741

:

The lovely Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio

plays Jeannie You guys definitely know

742

:

her, probably most known for playing

Tony Montana's sister, Gina, in Scarface.

743

:

She also played Maid Marian in

Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.

744

:

She's friggin gorgeous.

745

:

You guys gotta watch this movie.

746

:

So, her name's Jeannie,

and then her son is Tom.

747

:

She's got two sons.

748

:

The main character is Tom.

749

:

He's played by Joseph Mazzello, who

also was Tim in the Jurassic Park movie.

750

:

The first one, I think, and the river

wild and also the social network.

751

:

Seth Mooney plays Gunny,

the little brother, and he's

752

:

a really cute kid in this.

753

:

I, I thought so anyway, he did a couple

of things, but he did not continue acting.

754

:

So it doesn't really have any

other credits to speak of.

755

:

Phil.

756

:

Who is trying to, he's like,

not really her love interest,

757

:

but he's trying to date.

758

:

And he's played by David Marshall Grant.

759

:

He's also in Forever Young, The

Stepford Wives, The Devil Wears Prada.

760

:

And then he also was a producer of

the Brothers and Sisters TV series.

761

:

So he's pretty well known.

762

:

There's a little league team in

this coached by Coach Shremka.

763

:

And J.

764

:

O.

765

:

Sanders plays him.

766

:

He does have a lot of credits.

767

:

Let's see, Kiss the Girls and Along Came

a Spider, which I think is that the same

768

:

book series, The Day After Tomorrow and

Daylight with my man Sylvester Stallone.

769

:

Michael O'Keefe.

770

:

Okay, here we go.

771

:

Here is our crossover.

772

:

Actor from Roseanne, he plays Jackie's

boyfriend, husband, baby's father

773

:

of her son Fred in this movie.

774

:

He's our narrator.

775

:

We have it's 1 of those and he's the

adult version of Tom, the main character.

776

:

Yeah, but I think he's probably

most known for playing Fred and

777

:

Roseanne, but he is in a lot of stuff.

778

:

He was nominated for an Oscar

for his supporting role in

779

:

the great Santini from 1979.

780

:

Never seen that, but maybe

I should check it out.

781

:

And then has anyone seen Sneaky

Pete with Giovanni Ribisi?

782

:

I love him and it's a,

it's a cute, fun show.

783

:

I can't remember what streamer it was on.

784

:

But he's the detective.

785

:

Michael O'Keefe plays the

detective in that and lots,

786

:

he's just in a ton of things.

787

:

Now, another actor that carries

over into one of our other

788

:

episode is John Deal in this.

789

:

He plays one of one of Tom's friends

on the little league team Leland.

790

:

He plays Leland's dad, and

he's not really a very likable

791

:

character, which we'll get into,

792

:

.

John Deal who plays him is known for his role in the client.

793

:

And we actually talked about him

in the Stargate episode because

794

:

he plays Kowalski, one of the

other military guys in Stargate.

795

:

And then we have Joyce is a friend.

796

:

I don't know if she's her

sister or her friend of Jeannie.

797

:

Her name is Joyce and she's

played by Diane Venora and she

798

:

was actually nominated for a

Golden Globe in Bird from:

799

:

She played Justine in Heat.

800

:

Great movie.

801

:

And I thought this was

interesting cause I loved this.

802

:

I don't really recall her in it, but

oria, AKA Lady Capulet in the:

803

:

Romeo and Juliet, you know, the one

with Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio.

804

:

Yeah, that's her.

805

:

And then little Leland, the, the boy,

the friend is played by David Zahorsky.

806

:

He is in this and my summer

story in 94 and that's it.

807

:

Just that the music is by Cynthia

Miller and Miller is spelled with

808

:

an a R and she's not, she did a

lot of made for TV movies, music in

809

:

those, but not any big, big Hollywood

movies that I really took note of.

810

:

Okay, so I guarantee that the vast

majority of you have not seen this.

811

:

So thank you for

listening and go watch it.

812

:

It's, it's really good.

813

:

But I'm gonna talk about it so

that you don't, you aren't lost.

814

:

So the description is when Jeannie

Holman is driving with her two sons,

815

:

Tom and Gunny, she accidentally

runs into a drifter named Jack

816

:

McLeod, who breaks his leg.

817

:

Feeling sorry for him, she invites

Jack and his dog, Betty Jane, to stay

818

:

at her house until his leg has healed.

819

:

After having some difficulties to

adapt to his new lifestyle, Jack

820

:

soon, soon finds himself loved by the

family and they all want him to stay.

821

:

When he starts teaching baseball

to Tom, Who misses his father.

822

:

Who's missing in the Korean war.

823

:

The two of them develop a strong bond.

824

:

Meanwhile, Gunny believes

that there's more to Jack and

825

:

Betty Jane than meets the eye.

826

:

And he's determined to find out the

budget of this was 10 million and

827

:

it made 7 million in the box office.

828

:

Not great.

829

:

Okay.

830

:

So I don't, I don't know.

831

:

I don't think whether something

makes money really has.

832

:

Sometimes I guess it's an

indicator of a good movie, but

833

:

a lot of times it takes a while.

834

:

You know, there's a lot of cult followings

or just the movies that make money.

835

:

A lot of times, in my opinion, now are

just like these, there's no risks taken.

836

:

I'll just say that.

837

:

So plus in the nineties, there

were tons of independent movies.

838

:

As we talked about, there was

like well over 40 movies in

839

:

the theater that were ranked.

840

:

So I am telling you

guys watch three wishes.

841

:

I think you'll like it.

842

:

Yeah, it's like a family.

843

:

Family drama that's got some

fantasy elements to it, which is

844

:

totally not my jam, like at all.

845

:

I'm kind of surprised.

846

:

I like this.

847

:

Honestly, if Patrick Swayze

wasn't in it, I probably wouldn't

848

:

have given it a chance either.

849

:

But

850

:

okay, so it opens with a picture

perfect suburban neighborhood.

851

:

That's very 90s, right?

852

:

With people doing things, kids playing

and there's a voiceover about it being

853

:

Memorial Day and this is present day.

854

:

So we quickly see behind the facade of.

855

:

Things being perfect and the reality

is financial troubles for Tom, our main

856

:

character, and they're headed to the

cemetery because it's Memorial Day.

857

:

And there's chaos in the car.

858

:

The kids are fighting in the backseat.

859

:

He's worried about losing his

business and probably his house soon.

860

:

And he's visibly annoyed

by the kids fighting.

861

:

He's just not in a good head space.

862

:

And so he almost hits this guy and

his dog walking into the cemetery.

863

:

And we see him kind of

longingly look like Hmm.

864

:

Do I know him?

865

:

And it spurs the memory.

866

:

So now we're back in 1955 when he's a kid.

867

:

It's also Memorial Day.

868

:

So now we have Tom and

his little brother Gunny.

869

:

They're headed to the cemetery with

their now Widowed mother, Jeannie.

870

:

And so the dad is presumed

to be dead in the Korean war.

871

:

And Jeannie does actually hit a

man with her car accidentally.

872

:

And it's a quote unquote

drifter and it's Patrick Swayze.

873

:

So his name is Jack and

that's who she hits.

874

:

She actually Not just a little bump.

875

:

She hits him and it breaks

his leg and he's with his dog.

876

:

Who's named Betty Jane,.

877

:

And I don't know if maybe I've just

watched too many Sylvester Sloan movies,

878

:

but I got major Rambo vibes out at the

scene because there's a cop there that

879

:

comes to the scene and he's a major

dick and the guy, he, you guys know the

880

:

actor too, maybe not by his name, but

the name of the actor is Neil McDonough.

881

:

I don't know if I'm pronouncing

that right, McDonough.

882

:

And he, he's in Desperate

Housewives, Yellowstone,

883

:

Boomtown, Band of Brothers, etc.

884

:

He's in tons of stuff.

885

:

So that's who the cop is

and he's a real prick.

886

:

He actually, so the, the mom

is Oh my God, I'm so sorry.

887

:

Oh my God.

888

:

She tries to go over to him.

889

:

The cop stops her and he gets mad

at Jack for running into a car.

890

:

And hey, don't forget

hitchhiking is illegal.

891

:

Get out of here.

892

:

Seemed very Rambo, right?

893

:

Anyway, so what's wild is, okay,

she's a single mother with two little

894

:

kids and she's gorgeous and despite

all of her intuition and all of her

895

:

friends and neighbors, major unease,

she invites this man, strange man

896

:

to come stay with her and her kids.

897

:

She does just that.

898

:

And the idea is, oh, you know, cause

he doesn't want to put her out.

899

:

He's a nice guy.

900

:

Plus it's Patrick Swayze.

901

:

The idea is until his leg heals.

902

:

So I mean, I was watching it

being very uneasy to I would never

903

:

do that, but also most drifters

don't look like Patrick Swayze.

904

:

So I don't know.

905

:

I kind of get it.

906

:

Here's what Patrick Swayze

looks like as a drifter.

907

:

I mean, it's, I don't know.

908

:

He doesn't look, he's got a

very well manicured beard.

909

:

He has like a tweed sport coat on.

910

:

And one of those like newsboy caps

that I find super hot, AKA Tommy

911

:

Shelby, anyone from the Peaky Blinders?

912

:

I just love that look.

913

:

So anyway, he does not

look like your typical.

914

:

Drifter person transient type.

915

:

So

916

:

it's really quite nice.

917

:

Obviously we get all of these nice

scenes because leading up to this, Tom

918

:

is missing out on the dad son activities.

919

:

They're at this picnic for Memorial Day.

920

:

And there's, like, all these

activities for dads and their sons

921

:

to do and Tom doesn't have a dad.

922

:

He's on the baseball team.

923

:

He's really not very good at it.

924

:

You know, all the dads are

there, but he doesn't have a dad.

925

:

Also at that picnic, there's

all these jello molds.

926

:

It was just kind of a fun little

reminiscent thing of the fifties

927

:

and sixties, I guess when

jello molds A thing that people

928

:

brought to a potluck type deal.

929

:

So Tom wants a dad.

930

:

He doesn't have a dad.

931

:

And wouldn't, you know, Jack ends up

sort of filling that role for Tom.

932

:

He like majorly helps this baseball team.

933

:

Who's not good.

934

:

Get good.

935

:

He meditates, which at the time

in the fifties, like that's gotta

936

:

be wild, but he teaches them.

937

:

You know, like the mental piece

of baseball and he, he has a

938

:

saying to the boys he's like,

try to just do the opposite.

939

:

You're, you're too much in your head

trying to swing and hit, try and miss.

940

:

And then he helps them meditate.

941

:

So he has the idea it's like

everything contains its own opposite.

942

:

I think it's the saying that he says

to help the, the, the boys get good.

943

:

He also helps Tom practice

his swinging and batting.

944

:

I should say he's on crutches, but

he pitches to him and that will

945

:

come into play here in a second.

946

:

Because the coach of the little,

this little league team, he's

947

:

like, Hmm, who is this mystery man?

948

:

And he's like, Jack McLeod, that was this

White Sox player from back in the day.

949

:

And I don't know whatever happened to him.

950

:

He was really good, but he was only

on the, on the team for one season.

951

:

He just disappeared.

952

:

So now all the dads and everybody,

they're like, Oh, now they're like,

953

:

Oh, we like this drifter, man.

954

:

Cause he's a famous baseball

player, but Jack denies it.

955

:

Getting back to him filling that dad

role, Tom even gets him a Father's Day

956

:

card for Father's Day, and it breaks

Jack's heart because he knows he's

957

:

not going to be able he knows he can't

stay and be a dad to Tom But it's a

958

:

really heartwarming series of scenes.

959

:

I don't know.

960

:

And I don't even have kids.

961

:

You'd think I wouldn't

care, but it's great.

962

:

I do want to touch on the house because

I love mid century modern decor,

963

:

house architecture, all of that.

964

:

Their house is awesome.

965

:

It's super sweet, mid century modern

house, and I'm not entirely sure where

966

:

this is set, but my guess is Palm Springs,

and it gives me Palm Springs vibes and we

967

:

see at the edge of the town or the edge

s new suburban development in:

968

:

there's a billboard that

says it advertises family

969

:

dream homes, starting at.

970

:

Any guesses you guys how much

these dream houses costs?

971

:

1955?

972

:

13, 500.

973

:

I thought that was funny.

974

:

And then.

975

:

Okay.

976

:

Okay.

977

:

Let me see here.

978

:

How do I tell you about the nude

sunbathing by Patrick Swayze?

979

:

I was not expecting this in a family

drama, but now granted his clothes.

980

:

So he's like out on a lawn

chair, like an outside chair.

981

:

He's like sitting, not, not laying

on a lawn chair, sitting in like an

982

:

upright chair and his clothes are.

983

:

Like on the, the clothesline to dry.

984

:

So probably only has one outfit.

985

:

So he's washed it and he's

waiting for it to dry.

986

:

And he's getting a tan.

987

:

Cause he's, he's this free spirit guy.

988

:

Right?

989

:

Well, the neighbors of this like perfect,

tidy little, little development, they're

990

:

pretty uptight and they call him a

beat Nick and he's getting some sun.

991

:

And when he gets up to grab his pants to

put on, because he thinks he's alone and

992

:

then here, here, all these people come

in and We get a, we get a pretty sweet

993

:

peek at Swayze's ass in this, and one

of the neighbors at the site of this.

994

:

Literally falls over so

that was a great scene.

995

:

I really liked it.

996

:

Meanwhile, though in, in all seriousness,

he is filling this role for both Tom

997

:

and Jeannie, they have a lot of heart

to heart talks and they're giving

998

:

each other looks, you know, and they

really would make a fantastic couple.

999

:

They are both just incredibly beautiful.

:

00:59:03,205 --> 00:59:06,255

People both of them, I'm like, wow,

they would make a striking couple.

:

00:59:06,255 --> 00:59:08,165

I, I, I would like that to happen.

:

00:59:08,765 --> 00:59:13,415

But so he's mysterious and some of the

mystery comes into play in a few ways.

:

00:59:13,425 --> 00:59:17,165

So she sees him writing in a

journal in his room at night.

:

00:59:17,495 --> 00:59:22,085

And then when she snoops, there's

no words, it's blank pages.

:

00:59:22,085 --> 00:59:23,625

And then she.

:

00:59:23,960 --> 00:59:25,090

It falls out of her hand.

:

00:59:25,330 --> 00:59:30,310

She doesn't see, but we as the audience

see the writing come back and he

:

00:59:30,310 --> 00:59:35,530

also she sees when she's snooping

that he has a metal like a war metal.

:

00:59:35,560 --> 00:59:39,140

And it's I don't know much about

war metals, but it's star shaped.

:

00:59:39,610 --> 00:59:43,055

So, I think it's like, either

a bronze star, silver star.

:

00:59:44,225 --> 00:59:46,925

At any rate, I think it's supposed to

tell us that the time doesn't quite

:

00:59:46,925 --> 00:59:50,715

match up for when he would have received

this metal to the time that it is now.

:

00:59:51,355 --> 00:59:55,995

Given his age now him receiving that metal

would, would not be possible is sort of

:

00:59:55,995 --> 00:59:58,475

what I think we're cleaning from that.

:

00:59:59,075 --> 01:00:04,935

And So at first I thought, cause they have

a discussion about war and she gets mad

:

01:00:04,935 --> 01:00:07,905

at him cause he says something about war.

:

01:00:07,945 --> 01:00:08,375

I don't know.

:

01:00:09,105 --> 01:00:12,765

She, he didn't mean what she

thought he meant about war.

:

01:00:13,985 --> 01:00:15,785

Clearly he's been in a war before.

:

01:00:15,795 --> 01:00:20,775

And so at first we think, oh, well he

was also in Korea, but no, he wasn't.

:

01:00:21,185 --> 01:00:24,395

It was a different war that he was in

that we find out a little bit later.

:

01:00:24,735 --> 01:00:28,555

And then, so Gunny, the

little, the little brother.

:

01:00:28,860 --> 01:00:32,080

is actually very cute and when we

meet him he's scared of everything

:

01:00:32,090 --> 01:00:36,540

like he's a fraidy cat at first

he's afraid of this dog well then

:

01:00:36,750 --> 01:00:42,165

through a series of Encounters with

the dog, whose name is Betty Jane.

:

01:00:42,855 --> 01:00:45,355

He's like, there's

something more to this dog.

:

01:00:45,775 --> 01:00:51,165

And he has these magic 1 in particular,

but a couple of magical experiences

:

01:00:51,165 --> 01:00:53,555

with the dog becomes this weird.

:

01:00:54,105 --> 01:00:57,475

Being that Gunny is kind of afraid

of at first, but then he realizes

:

01:00:57,565 --> 01:01:00,715

it's like, turning into these stars

and it's actually like a nice being.

:

01:01:01,335 --> 01:01:05,535

And then it's, you know, Matt

through magic, it's stars and

:

01:01:05,535 --> 01:01:06,755

then it turns back into the dog.

:

01:01:06,755 --> 01:01:11,165

So he realizes that this dog is not a dog.

:

01:01:11,185 --> 01:01:12,745

There's something about this dog.

:

01:01:12,765 --> 01:01:15,225

And, but now he's no, he's

not scared of everything now.

:

01:01:15,485 --> 01:01:18,295

So the, the dog helps them

overcome a lot of his fears.

:

01:01:18,295 --> 01:01:23,085

Well, turns out we find out this

dog, Betty Jane is actually a genie.

:

01:01:24,995 --> 01:01:31,365

And we'll get back to the genie in a

bit, but there is this fishing trip.

:

01:01:31,425 --> 01:01:33,995

So it's very exciting.

:

01:01:34,225 --> 01:01:36,915

Jack doesn't want to go because the

guys are only interested in him going.

:

01:01:36,915 --> 01:01:41,065

Cause they think he is this famous

baseball player, but it's a father,

:

01:01:41,065 --> 01:01:44,845

son fishing, camping trip, and he goes.

:

01:01:45,255 --> 01:01:48,525

You know, he, he doesn't want

Tom to miss out on this trip.

:

01:01:48,985 --> 01:01:53,715

And one thing that I took note of is,

well, it's just, it's the 50s to the cars.

:

01:01:53,905 --> 01:01:59,225

It's just lots of fun things that

close all the things, but the cars are.

:

01:01:59,570 --> 01:02:03,560

Interesting, and it was just against the

fishing and capping camping backdrop.

:

01:02:03,890 --> 01:02:10,800

There's a pink car and these men are like,

you know, at the time really a certain

:

01:02:10,810 --> 01:02:12,850

type of man that has to be masculine.

:

01:02:12,850 --> 01:02:16,520

I don't know if pink cars were a

really popular thing back in the day.

:

01:02:16,550 --> 01:02:23,880

But anyway, an interesting juxtaposition

to say the least now, Leland's dad.

:

01:02:26,170 --> 01:02:27,540

Okay, so they're beautiful.

:

01:02:27,550 --> 01:02:30,330

They're camping and they

see this, like the group.

:

01:02:30,900 --> 01:02:37,260

See this beautiful scene with a deer

and everyone else is like, you know,

:

01:02:37,540 --> 01:02:38,970

they're like, Oh, wow, look at that.

:

01:02:39,440 --> 01:02:48,000

Well, Leland's dad who gives off major

like shitty aggro male energy, he sees

:

01:02:48,250 --> 01:02:52,810

this deer and all he can think is how fun

it's going to be to kill it in November.

:

01:02:53,705 --> 01:02:58,225

And he's saying this to Jack as if that's

like a regular thing dudes should say to

:

01:02:58,225 --> 01:03:00,585

each other to prove how manly they are.

:

01:03:01,055 --> 01:03:06,225

And I just love Jack because he

is clearly not into what this

:

01:03:06,225 --> 01:03:07,415

person has just said to him.

:

01:03:07,425 --> 01:03:11,055

Like, he's probably thinking no, I'm a

real man and I don't have to kill innocent

:

01:03:11,055 --> 01:03:12,765

creatures for fun to prove that I'm a man.

:

01:03:13,145 --> 01:03:16,505

He's trying to not make a big deal of

it because that's not why he's there.

:

01:03:16,505 --> 01:03:18,555

He's there for Tom, but.

:

01:03:18,795 --> 01:03:24,175

You can tell that he is less

than impressed with that comment.

:

01:03:24,215 --> 01:03:25,735

And so for that, I love him.

:

01:03:26,465 --> 01:03:29,355

And then that same dude, same aggro dude.

:

01:03:31,605 --> 01:03:34,225

Asks Jack, you know, they're all

sitting around the campfire and

:

01:03:34,225 --> 01:03:35,155

the kids are off doing something.

:

01:03:35,155 --> 01:03:36,085

So now it's just the guys.

:

01:03:36,615 --> 01:03:41,505

And he asks Jack about his time on

the road playing baseball about, you

:

01:03:41,505 --> 01:03:43,205

know, all the money and the women.

:

01:03:43,205 --> 01:03:45,175

And again, just like

your typical aggro dude.

:

01:03:45,655 --> 01:03:48,245

And again, Jack is like,

it's not about that.

:

01:03:48,245 --> 01:03:49,245

That's not what it was about.

:

01:03:49,275 --> 01:03:52,445

So it's very clear to us who

we're supposed to like and who

:

01:03:52,445 --> 01:03:53,335

we're not supposed to like.

:

01:03:53,345 --> 01:03:54,945

And so now we're back at home.

:

01:03:54,995 --> 01:03:56,035

Camping trip over.

:

01:03:56,320 --> 01:03:57,270

Back at home.

:

01:03:57,990 --> 01:04:02,750

Meanwhile, there's this Phil dude who

has been trying to cozy up to Jeannie.

:

01:04:02,840 --> 01:04:08,210

He's been taking her out on dates while

Jack babysits the kids and Jeannie

:

01:04:08,210 --> 01:04:12,840

has been kind of confiding in Jack

through their series of, of talks

:

01:04:12,840 --> 01:04:17,345

about how she feels like she's trying

to, you know, Start a business, but

:

01:04:17,345 --> 01:04:20,654

you know, it is the fifties and she

feels like it would be more secure.

:

01:04:20,654 --> 01:04:23,125

She feels like she should just get

remarried because that would maybe

:

01:04:23,125 --> 01:04:25,975

be a more secure life for the kids.

:

01:04:26,545 --> 01:04:28,115

But we see her gain confidence.

:

01:04:28,920 --> 01:04:33,440

In herself just as having Jack

there as a friend and confidant.

:

01:04:34,100 --> 01:04:37,700

So Phil proposes to her

and she turns him down.

:

01:04:37,820 --> 01:04:39,050

She's like, I don't need you.

:

01:04:39,970 --> 01:04:40,470

I love it.

:

01:04:40,510 --> 01:04:44,140

I it's like, again, this movie in

the fifties, I'm, I'm all for it.

:

01:04:45,090 --> 01:04:47,010

Well, she doesn't have to remarry.

:

01:04:47,020 --> 01:04:48,190

She can do this on her own.

:

01:04:48,720 --> 01:04:52,700

Well, then her and Jack have a

very passionate night together.

:

01:04:55,395 --> 01:04:58,705

I kind of wanted him to stay

too, and if I were her, I

:

01:04:58,715 --> 01:05:00,275

definitely would want him to stay.

:

01:05:01,025 --> 01:05:07,715

But what's quite nice is she knows,

you know, that's not who he is, that's

:

01:05:08,895 --> 01:05:10,685

not what is meant to happen here.

:

01:05:10,995 --> 01:05:15,165

He has made an impact in their lives, but

he's healed now, and he's gonna leave.

:

01:05:15,875 --> 01:05:19,920

But Now we're getting back to the genie.

:

01:05:22,210 --> 01:05:24,590

They have a conversation

about why he's here, right?

:

01:05:25,440 --> 01:05:29,850

So it turns out that yes, the

dog is a genie that grants wishes

:

01:05:29,880 --> 01:05:32,200

to families that do good deeds.

:

01:05:32,700 --> 01:05:35,200

And one of you cannot

wish for him to stay.

:

01:05:35,200 --> 01:05:36,540

That can't be one of your wishes.

:

01:05:37,020 --> 01:05:41,995

So genie knows that he needs to

But Tom is This is like the second

:

01:05:42,005 --> 01:05:44,825

father he's losing and he runs off.

:

01:05:44,895 --> 01:05:47,035

Tom and Jack ended up

having a conversation.

:

01:05:47,495 --> 01:05:53,085

And he tells him how he ended up

here is that he was once in war and

:

01:05:53,085 --> 01:05:55,795

came across Betty Jane, the genie

:

01:05:56,404 --> 01:05:58,935

if you don't make your own wish,

the genie makes a wish for you.

:

01:05:59,075 --> 01:06:00,415

Apparently that's, that's the deal.

:

01:06:00,425 --> 01:06:03,775

Cause Tom was like, well, I don't want to

wish then if I can't wish for you to stay.

:

01:06:04,075 --> 01:06:07,715

And so Jack's like, well, if that's

the case, I will make a wish for you.

:

01:06:07,715 --> 01:06:08,385

I have to.

:

01:06:08,825 --> 01:06:13,355

So that's how Jack got here is

that the genie wanted somebody

:

01:06:14,125 --> 01:06:16,115

to travel around with her.

:

01:06:16,450 --> 01:06:18,090

So she wouldn't be lonely.

:

01:06:19,770 --> 01:06:20,220

Yeah.

:

01:06:20,279 --> 01:06:23,260

And she thought he still

had some things to learn.

:

01:06:23,410 --> 01:06:25,570

So he, he wasn't done

with his journey, Jack.

:

01:06:25,590 --> 01:06:29,730

So that's, he is there as a

companion for the genie, the dog.

:

01:06:29,779 --> 01:06:30,130

Right?

:

01:06:30,360 --> 01:06:30,730

Okay.

:

01:06:30,970 --> 01:06:36,000

So also we have learned that Gunny,

the little brother has cancer.

:

01:06:36,000 --> 01:06:40,630

So obviously that's the wish that genie

has is that Gunny is going to be okay.

:

01:06:40,730 --> 01:06:41,150

Right?

:

01:06:41,560 --> 01:06:44,110

Gunny's wish is silly,

but it's, I don't know.

:

01:06:44,110 --> 01:06:47,075

He's maybe like, Five.

:

01:06:47,195 --> 01:06:47,665

I don't know.

:

01:06:47,725 --> 01:06:51,975

I'm not sure how old he is, but his wish

is that so it's the summertime, right?

:

01:06:51,975 --> 01:06:53,565

So we're leading up to the 4th of July.

:

01:06:54,455 --> 01:07:01,935

He wishes to fly Into and with the

fireworks at the 4th of July celebration.

:

01:07:02,654 --> 01:07:03,235

Isn't that cute?

:

01:07:03,255 --> 01:07:04,175

He's like really?

:

01:07:04,225 --> 01:07:05,355

That's that's what you want eh?

:

01:07:05,375 --> 01:07:10,730

Okay, and So Jack has to make a

wish for Tom because Tom's so Can't

:

01:07:10,730 --> 01:07:13,320

have his wish of Jack staying right?

:

01:07:15,620 --> 01:07:16,650

We'll get to what it is.

:

01:07:16,779 --> 01:07:17,060

Right?

:

01:07:17,060 --> 01:07:21,550

So now we are at the 4th of July

celebration and Gunny gets his wish.

:

01:07:21,779 --> 01:07:23,340

He isn't scared again.

:

01:07:23,350 --> 01:07:25,529

So this has been a good.

:

01:07:26,000 --> 01:07:29,510

Experience this time that Jack has been

living with the family has been good.

:

01:07:29,510 --> 01:07:30,810

It's taught them all some things.

:

01:07:31,240 --> 01:07:35,560

And 1 of the things that it's taught gunny

through the dog is to not be fearful.

:

01:07:35,590 --> 01:07:40,220

So he climbs up this tower so that he

can take off and fly and get his wish.

:

01:07:40,220 --> 01:07:41,220

And he does again.

:

01:07:41,220 --> 01:07:42,070

It's a fantasy movie.

:

01:07:42,070 --> 01:07:45,800

So there's some fantasy elements

of him being up in the stars

:

01:07:45,820 --> 01:07:47,029

and amongst the fireworks.

:

01:07:47,470 --> 01:07:48,350

It's pretty cool.

:

01:07:48,630 --> 01:07:48,970

Yeah.

:

01:07:49,270 --> 01:07:54,029

And then at this celebration,

the dad comes back.

:

01:07:54,330 --> 01:07:55,390

He's not dead.

:

01:07:55,940 --> 01:07:59,440

He was missing in action and

they say there's kind of a,

:

01:07:59,450 --> 01:08:01,090

like a newscaster voiceover.

:

01:08:01,090 --> 01:08:06,529

It's like on this day in:

POWs were released by the people's

:

01:08:06,529 --> 01:08:08,060

Republic of China, blah, blah, blah.

:

01:08:08,480 --> 01:08:10,080

So that's what we are.

:

01:08:10,100 --> 01:08:11,220

We think, oh.

:

01:08:11,880 --> 01:08:12,600

That's awesome.

:

01:08:12,610 --> 01:08:15,279

That must have been Jack's

wish for Tom, right?

:

01:08:15,660 --> 01:08:15,970

It's not.

:

01:08:18,340 --> 01:08:18,560

All right.

:

01:08:18,560 --> 01:08:19,100

But that's awesome.

:

01:08:19,100 --> 01:08:20,510

So they, now they're a family again.

:

01:08:20,529 --> 01:08:22,149

Gunny's going to live present day.

:

01:08:22,279 --> 01:08:22,880

Gunny lives.

:

01:08:22,899 --> 01:08:23,569

He's fine.

:

01:08:24,410 --> 01:08:28,890

He's still alive and well, but we're in

present day now, again, back with adult

:

01:08:28,899 --> 01:08:31,800

Tom and he's being annoyed by his kids.

:

01:08:31,810 --> 01:08:32,330

They're driving.

:

01:08:32,330 --> 01:08:37,660

He almost hits this guy with his

dog and he gets out of the car to

:

01:08:37,660 --> 01:08:43,399

go follow him into the cemetery

and he's hit softly, but hit by a.

:

01:08:43,825 --> 01:08:46,765

Baseball and then oh, there's Betty Jane.

:

01:08:46,765 --> 01:08:47,555

There's the dog.

:

01:08:47,604 --> 01:08:54,005

And then also Jack appears too and

briefly clarifies that his wish for

:

01:08:54,005 --> 01:08:56,475

Tom was not to have his father back.

:

01:08:56,875 --> 01:09:04,545

His wish for Tom was actually that Tom

would find happiness in whatever he has.

:

01:09:05,675 --> 01:09:10,015

So that's why he came back because

Tom isn't quite getting it.

:

01:09:10,385 --> 01:09:13,274

So he, he's back to remind Tom of that.

:

01:09:13,645 --> 01:09:15,484

And then he disappears,

then Jack disappears.

:

01:09:16,265 --> 01:09:20,545

So, of course, now Tom does realize how

lucky he is, despite the troubles that

:

01:09:20,545 --> 01:09:23,505

he's having, you know, his family's all

alive and healthy and he's doing well.

:

01:09:23,715 --> 01:09:24,434

Happy to have them.

:

01:09:24,434 --> 01:09:25,845

So he holds his family tight.

:

01:09:26,484 --> 01:09:32,125

And then the movie closes on

a shot of a tombstone that

:

01:09:32,125 --> 01:09:39,165

reads JW McLeod,:

:

01:09:39,785 --> 01:09:41,434

So the war he was in.

:

01:09:41,815 --> 01:09:43,234

Was World War II.

:

01:09:43,305 --> 01:09:44,854

He died, in:

:

01:09:45,385 --> 01:09:51,665

So he's been traveling then as

like the sidekick of the genie for

:

01:09:51,684 --> 01:09:59,850

11 years now and Yeah, that's the

end of the movie I, I don't know.

:

01:09:59,850 --> 01:10:00,890

I'm like all smiles.

:

01:10:00,920 --> 01:10:05,190

I, I know it kind of sounds

like, oh, yeah, it sounds like

:

01:10:05,190 --> 01:10:06,470

your typical family movie.

:

01:10:06,470 --> 01:10:07,950

But it's really good.

:

01:10:07,960 --> 01:10:09,510

And it's a shame that no 1 knows about it.

:

01:10:09,510 --> 01:10:12,470

I will say it's, it's far

better than I was not expecting

:

01:10:12,480 --> 01:10:13,830

to think much of anything.

:

01:10:14,550 --> 01:10:22,150

Of this movie, it keeps you on your toes

and the actors are great and, especially

:

01:10:22,230 --> 01:10:28,710

the two leads, Patrick and Mary Elizabeth

Mastrantonio, it's kind of a mouthful.

:

01:10:29,070 --> 01:10:33,020

They're, they have extremely

impactful, dramatic, and

:

01:10:33,020 --> 01:10:35,030

emotional moments in the movie.

:

01:10:35,340 --> 01:10:38,710

And that kind of makes it a

little more than your surface

:

01:10:38,710 --> 01:10:40,510

level, like family fantasy movie.

:

01:10:40,530 --> 01:10:43,750

So that is Three Wishes, you guys.

:

01:10:44,570 --> 01:10:45,460

Have you seen it?

:

01:10:46,660 --> 01:10:49,110

If you have, you must

tell me what you think.

:

01:10:49,130 --> 01:10:51,370

And if you haven't, or even if

you have, give it a rewatch.

:

01:10:51,410 --> 01:10:53,120

Let me know what you think.

:

01:10:53,670 --> 01:10:58,700

You guys, I totally loved seeing all the

mid century modern awesomeness, homes,

:

01:10:58,760 --> 01:11:01,210

cars, fashion, et cetera, in this movie.

:

01:11:02,370 --> 01:11:08,550

And we get some Swayze ass, but it is now

time to return to the present day reality.

:

01:11:08,620 --> 01:11:12,600

Until next time, be kind, rewind.
