Katie:Hello, I'm Katie and welcome to Retro Made Your Pop Culture Rewind.
Katie:Let's take another trip down memory lane.
Katie:We continue our ultimate everyman coverage with one of Patrick
Katie:Swayze's most memorable roles.
Katie:Today we travel back to July, 1991 to discuss the action crime
Katie:thriller point break, and all the other goings on of the time.
Katie:I'm excited to have Dominic Tarella joining me today.
Katie:Dom is a fellow last of the Action Heroes podcast network host, where he joins
Katie:Ryan on it's a long road, a Rambo series podcast, as well as his own show called
Katie:Movie Thoughts that I find hilarious.
Katie:Dom, first of all, you have a great name.
Dominick Tartamella:thank you
Katie:Secondly,
Dominick Tartamella:pronounced everything right too.
Dominick Tartamella:You actually
Katie:did I?
Katie:Oh, good.
Katie:Good, good, good.
Katie:Secondly, thank you so much for joining me.
Katie:yeah, tell us more about your shows.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, so yeah, I do, uh, the show with Ryan where we
Dominick Tartamella:were going through the Rambo movies.
Dominick Tartamella:It's a long road, having a good time with that.
Dominick Tartamella:And then I do my own podcast movie Thoughts where I cover new movies,
Dominick Tartamella:old movies, and I just, like the title says, I just give my thoughts
Dominick Tartamella:and opinions on all that fun stuff.
Katie:It is great.
Katie:I really, I think you all, if you like retro made listeners, I think
Katie:you'll like movie thoughts as well,
Dominick Tartamella:you.
Dominick Tartamella:I
Katie:so yeah, check it out.
Katie:It's funny.
Katie:Okay, so let's first get into the retro state of mind by opening
Katie:the time capsule from July, 1991.
Katie:I know you're, quite a bit younger than I am.
Katie:So you might have caught some of these in syndication dom, but , according to the
Katie:Nielsen ratings from the 90 to 91 season,
Dominick Tartamella:Okay.
Katie:the popular primetime shows were Cheers.
Katie:Roseanne a Different World,
Dominick Tartamella:Okay.
Katie:Cosby Show,
Dominick Tartamella:Right.
Katie:Brown, the Golden Girls
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:Women Murder She Wrote and Empty Nest.
Katie:Do you recall watching any of those?
Dominick Tartamella:Ro Roseanne.
Dominick Tartamella:And, uh, cheers.
Dominick Tartamella:Were always on in my household growing up, you know?
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, just remember John Goodman being on the TV a lot.
Katie:I still watch that.
Katie:Like the reruns still.
Katie:I love it.
Dominick Tartamella:I with like the reboot.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh,
Dominick Tartamella:that other stuff happened with her, but is what it is.
Dominick Tartamella:It was good.
Dominick Tartamella:It was good while it lasted.
Katie:I think it's still pretty good.
Katie:And I do John Goodman's great.
Katie:Cheers.
Katie:Who doesn't love?
Katie:Cheers.
Katie:, so we kind of covered a little bit of 91, so I didn't wanna
Katie:rehash a lot of the same cartoons.
Katie:So I thought I would just ask you, what cartoons you watched when you were a kid,
Dominick Tartamella:I mean, uh, in the nineties I watched, what didn't I watch?
Dominick Tartamella:I mean, I watched like the classics, like Scooby Doo and
Dominick Tartamella:stuff like that, reruns, I love it.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:I always liked staying up late and just watching all that old,
Dominick Tartamella:like those sixties cartoons.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, and then I watched, you know, Wing, dark Batman, the
Dominick Tartamella:series, all that fun stuff.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, throughout like all the, There was like a lot of Marvel superhero.
Dominick Tartamella:I remember Spider-Man cartoon and stuff like that.
Dominick Tartamella:I watched all that stuff.
Katie:That makes sense.
Katie:Were you a cereal kid?
Katie:Did you eat a lot of cereal?
Katie:Like.
Dominick Tartamella:I still, he loves still a serial kid.
Katie:I do too.
Katie:I do too.
Katie:I feel.
Katie:Okay.
Katie:Good.
Katie:I have, I feel like I'm like the only adult that still eats cereal.
Dominick Tartamella:I still like staring at the back of the box eating It
Katie:There's no prizes inside anymore
Dominick Tartamella:is
Katie:and yeah, it's not,
Dominick Tartamella:I was talking about that with somebody recently.
Dominick Tartamella:Like they used to be so substantial.
Dominick Tartamella:Like you used to get like a whole toy in there.
Dominick Tartamella:Now it's either you gotta collect UPCs or
Katie:oh, oh, who's gonna bother with that?
Dominick Tartamella:who's kid's
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:No, I'm an adult and I wouldn't do that.
Katie:Like, yeah, that's too much.
Katie:What cereal did you
Katie:enjoy or still enjoy?
Dominick Tartamella:uh.
Dominick Tartamella:Fruit Loops.
Dominick Tartamella:Lucky Fruity Pebbles.
Katie:Oh yeah.
Katie:Fruity Pebbles.
Dominick Tartamella:Basically
Katie:Sugar.
Katie:Bring it on.
Katie:Golden Crisp or Sugar Smacks.
Dominick Tartamella:Sugar
Dominick Tartamella:pops.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Katie:yeah.
Katie:Corn Pops.
Dominick Tartamella:I think they might've stopped making pops.
Katie:Yeah, they probably don't make a lot of those anymore, cereal
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: the Halloween cereals.
Katie:Uh, BooBerry
Katie:Choa or BooBerry,
Dominick Tartamella:that stuff.
Dominick Tartamella:Frankenberry.
Dominick Tartamella:. I still get that every year when it comes out.
Katie:Oh, cereal.
Katie:I love it.
Katie:It's a, it's a good quick meal.
Katie:I like cereal.
Dominick Tartamella:eat for dinner, breakfast, lunch, doesn't matter.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:bowl and
Katie:well, in a serving size is like three fourths of a cup of
Katie:cereal, which is like two bites.
Katie:So I'm
Dominick Tartamella:actually look at the serving size, it everything up.
Dominick Tartamella:That's like Oreos too.
Dominick Tartamella:Look at the serving It's like a half a Oreo.
Dominick Tartamella:And then I
Katie:Or ice cream?
Katie:Yeah, ice cream.
Dominick Tartamella:Deadly.
Katie:It's kind of depressing.
Katie:So we'll move on
Dominick Tartamella:serving size.
Katie:Yeah, let's not do that.
Katie:Now I'm making a guess, but tell me if I'm wrong.
Katie:Did you watch wrestling?
Dominick Tartamella:Oh, of Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:a little bit with that.
Dominick Tartamella:Ryan.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, yeah,
Katie:Oh, okay.
Dominick Tartamella:my brother were big, big wrestling fans.
Dominick Tartamella:I still like, I'll my nephew, I'll still like check out some of the newer stuff,
Dominick Tartamella:but I just love all the classic nineties and early two thousands stuff, especially.
Katie:Well, this might be a little before your time,
Dominick Tartamella:Okay.
Katie:Well actually, is there such a thing as a Pro Wrestling Illustrated,
Katie:uh,
Dominick Tartamella:Um,
Katie:Does that exist still?
Dominick Tartamella:I, I remember, I, I, I had like the w w F ones, like,
Dominick Tartamella:I remember there was like attitude.
Dominick Tartamella:I remember having those
Katie:Okay,
Dominick Tartamella:I don't remember the, that was one you're talking about.
Dominick Tartamella:That was a, a real
Katie:well, I just, so they put out a list.
Katie:It's p w i, I don't know if it still exists, but it did in 91.
Katie:Pro Wrestling Illustrated, they ranked, they like, uh, tag Team of
Katie:the Year and Wrestler of the Year.
Katie:So they like, I.
Katie:Put out a list every year.
Katie:And so I wasn't sure if that magazine still existed or not.
Katie:But in 91, the wrestler of the year was, take a wild guess.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, in, in 91.
Katie:Mm-hmm.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, was it, was it Hogan or No?
Katie:it was, yeah.
Katie:Was he ever not,
Katie:I mean,
Dominick Tartamella:that's the thing I was trying to see.
Dominick Tartamella:'cause I know he started, uh, you know, waning in popularity
Dominick Tartamella:probably around the mid nineties.
Dominick Tartamella:And then he went
Dominick Tartamella:W C W and then all that stuff happened.
Dominick Tartamella:He kind of got popular again, but that's why I was trying to think for a minute.
Dominick Tartamella:If it was a younger Yeah, I could see that though.
Dominick Tartamella:Hulk Hogan.
Dominick Tartamella:Hulk Hogan.
Katie:Hulk Hogan
Dominick Tartamella:It's great.
Dominick Tartamella:. Hogan.
Katie:I mean, he's Thunder Lips to me,
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: lips in the flesh, baby.
Katie:baby.
Katie:Oh, Rocky two.
Katie:Rocky three.
Katie:Rocky three.
Katie:God.
Katie:Um.
Katie:So then I, I was unfamiliar with the enforcers, but they apparently
Katie:were the tag team of the year in 91.
Katie:Arn
Katie:Anderson, Anderson, and Larry Zako.
Katie:I'm probably pronouncing
Dominick Tartamella:I, yeah, I know the names.
Dominick Tartamella:I know the names.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:I didn't realize they were a tag team, though.
Dominick Tartamella:I must've missed that.
Katie:Yeah, I remember like, um, the Bush Whackers
Dominick Tartamella:the Bush whackers, right?
Katie:a thing and Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:the Legion of Doom.
Dominick Tartamella:Right.
Dominick Tartamella:Those guys, they were, I think they were the guys that wear the masks
Dominick Tartamella:and the shoulder pads and all that.
Katie:Oh yeah,
Katie:yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:match of the year for 91 was the Steiner Brothers who I'm unfamiliar with
Dominick Tartamella:Oh, you, oh, you
Dominick Tartamella:brothers.
Katie:no, I don't know.
Katie:I don't Versus Sting.
Katie:Oh, okay.
Katie:Well, Rick and Scott Steiner.
Katie:Okay.
Dominick Tartamella:yeah, they got more popular I think in W C W later
Katie:So I watched it earlier,
Dominick Tartamella:Oh,
Katie:probably like, so, and I'm older than you, but.
Katie:So this was like super Brawl one.
Katie:They, the Steiner Brothers versus Sting and Lex Luger, that was considered
Katie:the match of the year from 1991.
Dominick Tartamella:Gotta
Katie:And then, oh God, um, few to the year, which I thought this was,
Katie:this probably would've been good.
Katie:The Ultimate Warrior versus the undertaker
Dominick Tartamella:Oh, okay.
Katie:Was the undertaker around when you were
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:I didn't even realize they had a, a feud though at one point.
Dominick Tartamella:I must have missed that or forgotten about it.
Dominick Tartamella:Know probably about a year before this, it was probably the
Dominick Tartamella:Hogan ultimate Warrior thing.
Dominick Tartamella:I think they did
Katie:Okay.
Dominick Tartamella:a around this time.
Dominick Tartamella:They did a big feud with that.
Dominick Tartamella:but I didn't re realize he did one with the undertaker.
Dominick Tartamella:I gotta look into that.
Katie:You know, this is according to my internet research and then most hated,
Katie:I hadn't heard of this one either.
Katie:Sergeant Slaughter.
Dominick Tartamella:Sergeant Slaughter.
Dominick Tartamella:Yes.
Dominick Tartamella:Yes.
Dominick Tartamella:. He, he actually wrestles, I think it's probably about 91.
Dominick Tartamella:He wrestled Hulk Hogan at like a main event of a WrestleMania.
Dominick Tartamella:So it's probably WrestleMania seven.
Dominick Tartamella:Maybe if I'm I'm
Katie:God, I don't even, yeah,
Dominick Tartamella:to my brain, uh, , my old, my old wrestling brain
Katie:what?
Katie:What were the other wrestlers that you were into that maybe weren't listed here?
Dominick Tartamella:I definitely, I mean, I definitely liked the ultimate
Dominick Tartamella:Warrior, Hulk Hogan, uh, macho man.
Katie:Oh yeah, macho man, Randy Savage.
Dominick Tartamella:Sean
Katie:Okay,
Dominick Tartamella:uh, I'm a big fan of them.
Dominick Tartamella:Stone Cold obviously came in later and, but yeah, those are,
Dominick Tartamella:those are probably my top five, six, whichever ones I just named.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:awesome.
Katie:Well, I liked like Jake the snake,
Katie:the bush whackers and the iron chic like a little bit earlier, like in the eighties,
Katie:probably, like I watched with my grandpa,
Katie:um, and I remember when Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage were kind of teamed up
Dominick Tartamella:the
Dominick Tartamella:right?
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:They called
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:I, I don't know.
Katie:And then there was this storyline where they got mad at one another somehow.
Katie:I don't know.
Katie:Uh, I, yeah.
Katie:let's see.
Katie:There was probably, who else?
Katie:There's some I'm missing, but those are probably the big ones that I remember.
Katie:Oh, and then Junkyard Dog too.
Dominick Tartamella:Junky dog.
Dominick Tartamella:Well, me and my brother, like we watched a lot of that older stuff too.
Dominick Tartamella:Like we went back when we got, became big wrestling fans and we
Dominick Tartamella:all that, from the early eighties and stuff, so.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:like Andre, the giant
Katie:stuff.
Katie:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Dominick Tartamella:. all that
Katie:Cool.
Katie:So this time in 91, you were probably pretty little, but like,
Katie:you know, in the early ni Yeah.
Katie:in the early nineties there, there were some big toys and gadgets
Katie:that I found kind of hilarious.
Dominick Tartamella:Uhhuh
Katie:Um, were you into the teenage Mutt Ninja Turtles at all?
Dominick Tartamella:yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:I was . I still am
Katie:are really,
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah,
Katie:do you have any of the swags?
Katie:So apparently the Ninja Turtles and Bart Simpson was big at this
Katie:time, so like just stuff, anything, just swag with those names on it.
Dominick Tartamella:I had definitely a lot of Simpsons, Bart Simpson
Dominick Tartamella:shirts, eat my shorts and all that
Katie:Oh yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:and I remember you'd get in trouble
Dominick Tartamella:in school too at that point.
Dominick Tartamella:Like I remember wearing stuff to school in certain shirts
Dominick Tartamella:you would get in trouble for.
Dominick Tartamella:Um,
Katie:Oh
Dominick Tartamella:yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:Just because I guess that was, you know, provocative at that time.
Dominick Tartamella:uh, now you could get away with anything Um, and then I definitely had a lot
Dominick Tartamella:Nja turtles, like I probably still have them in like my mother's attic.
Dominick Tartamella:Just a ton of Ninja Turtles.
Dominick Tartamella:They're a lot of that stuff now.
Dominick Tartamella:Like the vintage,
Katie:Oh, of course they are.
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: nineties, same packaging.
Katie:It's crazy.
Katie:Oh,
Dominick Tartamella:brings me back,
Katie:They, because they know that all of us will just buy the
Katie:stuff again, for nostalgic reasons.
Dominick Tartamella:exactly.
Katie:Also the, so speaking of, uh, wrestling, there were these
Katie:apparently called W W F wrestling buddies, like a pillow person
Katie:almost, but it was like a wrestler.
Katie:Did you have one?
Dominick Tartamella:had, I had, I, I think I had two.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah, I had, um, I had big boss man.
Dominick Tartamella:Do you remember that guy?
Dominick Tartamella:He like dressed up like the cop.
Dominick Tartamella:You vaguely
Katie:vaguely.
Katie:Vaguely.
Katie:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:and then my brother, I think had macho man.
Dominick Tartamella:We had those are a hot commodity still.
Dominick Tartamella:I have like a collects all that stuff and they, they go for like big money.
Dominick Tartamella:Those
Katie:Oh,
Dominick Tartamella:especially
Katie:nice.
Katie:Well, I hope you still have yours.
Katie:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:Somewhere, I'm sure
Katie:Your mom's, yeah.
Katie:At your mom's house.
Dominick Tartamella:my
Dominick Tartamella:house.
Katie:Were you a Nintendo kid?
Dominick Tartamella:Yes,
Katie:So the Nintendo n e s game card, like the games were big
Katie:and then apparently the Super Nintendo must have come out in 92.
Katie:those were really big this year.
Katie:Or 91.
Katie:I'm sorry.
Katie:Did I say 92?
Katie:91.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:And then for girls, the Crimp and Curl Cabbage Patch Kids, which I
Katie:think I remember, which was just dumb.
Katie:Their hair was just like weird.
Katie:And it came with a crimper crimped hair.
Katie:Remember that
Dominick Tartamella:Uhhuh,
Katie:No, you probably don't.
Dominick Tartamella:I've, I've heard the stories about the,
Dominick Tartamella:like, the stories of how hard the Cabbage Patch dolls were to get
Katie:Yeah,
Dominick Tartamella:day.
Dominick Tartamella:Like my sister, when my mother would go crazy trying to get those
Dominick Tartamella:for my sister and stuff like that.
Katie:you couldn't just order them
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:from Amazon.
Katie:You had to go to a store.
Dominick Tartamella:that nowadays.
Dominick Tartamella:You had to pick a pre-order and stuff like that.
Dominick Tartamella:You had to know, I've heard stories about people going outside and
Dominick Tartamella:meeting the, the truck drivers for toys us and paying them off and
Katie:Oh my God.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Katie:hardcore Christmas in the eighties though, man.
Katie:Or early nineties.
Katie:Yeah,
Dominick Tartamella:the good old days.
Katie:we didn't ever have one of these, but in 91, the dual deck V C R came out.
Dominick Tartamella:was
Katie:Like there were two slots.
Katie:Like, so apparently you could like, I don't know what the use would be, record,
Dominick Tartamella:record
Katie:rent a movie and then record it to your own tape?
Dominick Tartamella:right.
Dominick Tartamella:That was thing.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Katie:That and then there was the, uh, it was called a rap man, like
Katie:it wasn't a Walkman, it was like a keyboard, but it was made just for
Katie:the purpose of like making rap songs
Dominick Tartamella:oh,
Katie:and it was called the Rap Man.
Dominick Tartamella:Oh, Okay.
Katie:And then, From a Walkman perspective, Sony
Katie:came out with a video Walkman,
Katie:and it used like the tiny cassettes, like not the regular sized,
Katie:I don't know, it was $1,400
Dominick Tartamella:wow.
Katie:in 91 for this like tiny little video walkman.
Katie:I don't know what the use for that would be.
Katie:So I think that probably came and went pretty quickly.
Dominick Tartamella:right?
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:I don't, I, I don't even remember that, honestly.
Dominick Tartamella:I don't know how popular they were.
Dominick Tartamella:I mean, for that
Katie:I don't recall it at all.
Dominick Tartamella:Right.
Katie:But then, uh, camcorders
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:and portable CD players were really big in, in the early
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Dominick Tartamella:. I
Katie:from a gadget perspective.
Dominick Tartamella:Definitely had one
Katie:And then,
Dominick Tartamella:CDs.
Katie:do you remember swatch like the, or do you recall like the, the big like
Katie:watch clocks that people had on there
Dominick Tartamella:I
Katie:or swatch watches?
Dominick Tartamella:Swatch.
Dominick Tartamella:I just can't picture what they, what they made.
Katie:Swatch watches is kind of what they're known for.
Katie:But they came out with a phone and they called it a twin phone,
Katie:where both the res, like both ends.
Katie:You could talk and hear out of it.
Dominick Tartamella:really?
Katie:it, that seemed kind of dumb too.
Katie:But that came out.
Katie:The Swatch twin phone.
Katie:Does anybody recall that?
Katie:Moon Shoes.
Katie:I'm sure you've heard of them.
Dominick Tartamella:Yes.
Katie:Like these big boots.
Katie:We, I didn't have them either, but apparently they were huge in 91.
Katie:And let's see, vanilla Ice and New Kids on the Block.
Katie:Stuff like those dolls.
Katie:The sleeping baths bags, the bedding.
Katie:Like my friend, I had a couple friends that had
Katie:all of it.
Dominick Tartamella:right.
Dominick Tartamella:One of my cousins had all that, the blankets and the toys.
Dominick Tartamella:The new kids on the block stuff.
Dominick Tartamella:I remember that.
Katie:The early nineties.
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: What a time to be alive.
Katie:Indeed.
Katie:Then music wise, I'll just do the top five, and then we'll get into
Katie:some news before we hit the movie.
Katie:But Paula Abdul's Rush Rush was the number one song this week.
Katie:July 12th, 1991 is the release date of Point Break then
Dominick Tartamella:Hmm.
Katie:Unbelievable by E M F,
Dominick Tartamella:Nice.
Katie:which I thought that was later.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah,
Katie:don't know why.
Dominick Tartamella:later too.
Dominick Tartamella:the one I'm thinking of y'all.
Dominick Tartamella:Unbelievable.
Dominick Tartamella:Okay.
Katie:I'm glad that you did that.
Katie:'cause I was Nobody wants
Dominick Tartamella:I'm gonna do it whether you like it or not do stuff.
Katie:Thank you.
Katie:'cause I was not about to, yes, that's the song.
Dominick Tartamella:Okay?
Katie:And then Jesus Jones right here, right now, I
Katie:totally forgot of his existence.
Dominick Tartamella:Yes.
Dominick Tartamella:I know that song,
Katie:I wanna sex you up by color.
Katie:Me bad.
Katie:Ugh.
Katie:I loved color Me bad.
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: could forget that song?
Katie:with a
Katie:Oh my God, I loved it.
Katie:And bad is spelled with two D color.
Katie:Me bad.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:And then num, the number five song is Power of Love by Luther Vandross.
Dominick Tartamella:okay.
Dominick Tartamella:Cool.
Dominick Tartamella:Good.
Dominick Tartamella:Good music.
Katie:Now, do you have any guesses for what, um, like some really
Katie:big movie premieres were July 91.
Katie:Can you think of anything
Dominick Tartamella:91.
Dominick Tartamella:Um
Katie:one is probably like the most well-known action movie, probably.
Dominick Tartamella:Um, I would say terminated two comes
Dominick Tartamella:out around this time, right?
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Yep.
Katie:It, it premiered in July of 91.
Katie:Same time as point break.
Dominick Tartamella:Oh, okay.
Dominick Tartamella:How, how, how far away from the release of Point Break was that?
Katie:Um, I don't know what day it was, but it was in July.
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: They're both in July, right?
Katie:Oh,
Katie:Both in July of Yeah.
Katie:And then also Boys in the Hood premiered, which was also a huge movie
Katie:time.
Katie:That was, I loved that movie.
Katie:And it, I think that made Morris's Chestnut's career.
Katie:I, I need to have a whole conversation about him.
Katie:He's, he's like my, I love him.
Katie:Other news and events from July of 91, Boris Yeltsin is sworn in as the
Katie:first elected president of Russia,
Dominick Tartamella:Okay.
Katie:91.
Katie:That seems kind of crazy.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:Jeffrey Dahmer confesses to killing
Katie:17 men.
Dominick Tartamella:wow.
Katie:Did you watch that Netflix show?
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:I barely, it was very hard to get through it, It was a
Dominick Tartamella:watch.
Katie:that guy did a good job.
Dominick Tartamella:Oh
Katie:I forget his name.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:I forgot his name too.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:He did a great job.
Dominick Tartamella:But that, that show was like very edge of the seat stuff.
Dominick Tartamella:Like, to take breaks in between episodes
Dominick Tartamella:just like, oh, this is get, this is getting too
Katie:It's, it's heavy.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Especially since it's
Katie:true.
Dominick Tartamella:Right.
Katie:Uh, Paul Rubins, a k a Peewee Herman, this was his scandal.
Katie:He's arrested in Florida
Dominick Tartamella:Yes.
Katie:for exposing himself in an adult movie theater.
Katie:That in and of itself, I can't believe people went to a pub, like a
Katie:public theater to watch adult movies.
Dominick Tartamella:Crazy.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:It's, it's, it's not that he would even put himself in that situation,
Katie:I remember that being a huge scandal, and it
Katie:doesn't seem like it would be
Dominick Tartamella:Right.
Katie:I don't know.
Katie:Maybe it would.
Dominick Tartamella:Maybe it's, it's one of those things, I mean, not to,
Dominick Tartamella:not to justify it or anything like that, but he a regular movie theater
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:That's,
Dominick Tartamella:It
Dominick Tartamella:you know, to see, uh, point break
Katie:Pocahontas.
Katie:Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
Katie:Also Russia and the US sign a long range nuclear weapons reduction pact.
Katie:Apparently in July of 91, women just now are allowed to fly combat aircraft left.
Dominick Tartamella:wow.
Katie:Michael Landon died of pancreatic cancer and he was only 54.
Katie:Michael Landon from like highway to heaven.
Katie:Little house on the Prairie.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:I don't know if you ever watched those, that was way before your time.
Dominick Tartamella:remember, uh, highway to Heaven.
Dominick Tartamella:That one.
Katie:And Kirk Cameron marries his growing pains.
Katie:CoStar, Chelsea Noble.
Dominick Tartamella:Oh, okay.
Katie:I sorta remember that she played the, um, nanny, I think
Katie:her name was Kate in the show.
Katie:And then just a touch later on August 6th, the first website was built
Dominick Tartamella:Oh, wow.
Katie:and put online.
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: I wonder how that ran.
Katie:Yeah, I don't know,
Katie:before we get into the movie, I have a couple questions for you.
Katie:So today's movie point break features our Every man, Patrick Swayze.
Katie:Do you have any thoughts or fandom or, or anything that you'd like to share?
Dominick Tartamella:Swayze.
Dominick Tartamella:I'm
Dominick Tartamella:big fan of Patrick Swayze and Roadhouse, dirty Dancing Ghost,
Dominick Tartamella:uh, . I just love, I just love the guy.
Dominick Tartamella:I miss him dearly
Katie:who doesn't?
Katie:I do too.
Katie:I mean, some people are like, oh, he's fine, but I've never
Katie:met anyone that doesn't like him.
Dominick Tartamella:right?
Dominick Tartamella:I, I think he's, yeah, like you said, he's one of those guys.
Dominick Tartamella:You gotta at least like him.
Dominick Tartamella:Um, I just, I loved all the movies he was in and stuff like that.
Dominick Tartamella:Point Break included great hair in this movie in . I'm of the, the locks he has.
Katie:Oh, I actually, that's so funny that you say that.
Katie:So, um, for listeners, Dom uh, is rocking a bald head,
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: I am rocking the ball.
Katie:but, uh, Patrick Swayze's hair, I, I don't like it in point break.
Dominick Tartamella:Oh, you don't like it
Katie:It's like the, it's like sun bleached 'cause it's not his regular
Katie:like, dark hair that I do like.
Katie:Yeah, it's all sun bleached and it's like a lion's mane I guess.
Dominick Tartamella:full, I would take it
Katie:Okay.
Katie:All right, well you can have it.
Katie:It's kind of a running joke now, my first season is both everyman Patrick s Swee
Katie:and our other everyman, Kurt Russell.
Dominick Tartamella:love him too.
Katie:Do you think that they look alike at all?
Dominick Tartamella:Um, I guess there's a resemblance.
Dominick Tartamella:Um, I, I don't think they, like, face wise, I don't think they look
Dominick Tartamella:alike, but I guess with the same, you know, the brown hair, they
Dominick Tartamella:both had long brown hair, a lot.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, same.
Dominick Tartamella:I, I guess they're probably about the same size.
Dominick Tartamella:Right.
Dominick Tartamella:Same kind of physique.
Dominick Tartamella:could see them getting mistaken for one another, but I, I don't see
Dominick Tartamella:a strong resemblance in the face.
Katie:No.
Katie:Okay.
Katie:That's interesting.
Katie:I ask most of my guests and the vast majority have been men
Katie:don't quite see it, but women very much think they look alike.
Katie:So there's something, yeah.
Katie:I'm curious what your wife thinks.
Dominick Tartamella:right?
Dominick Tartamella:ask her.
Katie:Do you recall the first time you saw point break or do you
Katie:have any specific memories of your first viewing or previous viewings?
Dominick Tartamella:I remember, like, I remember seeing it on TV in
Dominick Tartamella:nineties, probably bits and pieces.
Dominick Tartamella:It wasn't until like years later that I think, like me and my brother, we were
Dominick Tartamella:probably on a Patrick Swayze kick and we were just watching all his movies
Dominick Tartamella:and we, we watched it in its entirety.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, I always liked it.
Dominick Tartamella:I like it's a little over the top, you know.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, like Gary Busey, obviously.
Dominick Tartamella:He's fun too.
Dominick Tartamella:with his,
Katie:is.
Katie:He's pretty good.
Dominick Tartamella:his giant Bugs Bunny teeth,
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Oh, Gary Busey.
Katie:I mean, I think he's actually pretty good in this movie though.
Dominick Tartamella:yeah, he's great.
Dominick Tartamella:He's a great actor.
Dominick Tartamella:I like actually, this is more like a subdue role for him.
Dominick Tartamella:'cause I feel like sometimes he's really like over the top.
Dominick Tartamella:but he's good in it.
Dominick Tartamella:Keanu another guy I love.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, well, whether it's speed or the Matrix movies, I just, it's like the,
Dominick Tartamella:the perfect pairing of Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves being in a film together.
Katie:Did you see on that point, have you ever seen, uh, Youngblood with Patrick
Dominick Tartamella:the
Katie:Swayze and Rob Lowe?
Dominick Tartamella:one, right?
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Mm-hmm.
Dominick Tartamella:watched it years ago.
Dominick Tartamella:rewatch it again.
Dominick Tartamella:Rob
Katie:I haven't seen it in a very long time, but I remember loving it.
Katie:And it will be covered on this season of Retro Made, but Keanu Reeves is
Katie:in that also, so it's the second.
Katie:So point break is the second time they've been in a movie together.
Dominick Tartamella:wow.
Dominick Tartamella:I'm guessing Keanu was in a smaller role in that,
Katie:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:right?
Dominick Tartamella:And that was, that was probably post outsiders, right?
Dominick Tartamella:I'm thinking, uh,
Katie:Yes.
Katie:It was, I wanna say 86
Katie:ish, maybe.
Dominick Tartamella:makes sense.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:. , revisit that one.
Dominick Tartamella:I know I watched it at some point.
Dominick Tartamella:I remember watching it.
Dominick Tartamella:just can't remember much about it.
Katie:Yeah, it's good.
Katie:I'd recommend a rewatch.
Katie:Well, actually, I mean it, or it could be one that I recall being really good.
Katie:And then if I rewatch it again, you Yeah, it could be one of those.
Katie:Alright.
Katie:Shall we get into the movie?
Dominick Tartamella:Let's do it.
Katie:Or release date July 12th, 1991, which is almost exactly, 32 years ago
Dominick Tartamella:Perfect.
Dominick Tartamella:Perfect timing.
Katie:Rated R it's over two hours, which I felt it, I, I don't know about you,
Katie:but I felt that it was over two hours.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:7.2 I M D B.
Katie:And then, we have Catherine Bigelow, who won two Oscars for the Hurt
Katie:Locker, and, and then she was also nominated for Zero Dark 30.
Katie:She is the director here.
Katie:you know that?
Katie:I don't think I knew that.
Dominick Tartamella:I did know that.
Dominick Tartamella:And then at this time she was with James Cameron.
Dominick Tartamella:Right?
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:She was married to him at the time.
Dominick Tartamella:then I think, well, I was watching it yesterday, rewatching it,
Dominick Tartamella:and he was a, he's a producer on it too.
Katie:Okay.
Katie:yeah.
Katie:that makes sense.
Dominick Tartamella:Which is interesting.
Dominick Tartamella:you said terminated too.
Dominick Tartamella:Came out around this time, so,
Katie:Oh yeah, that, oh yeah.
Katie:I hadn't put that together.
Katie:Yeah, I did.
Dominick Tartamella:Interesting.
Katie:Rick King, who's not well known, and then w Peter
Katie:Illif, those are the writers.
Katie:And Illif also wrote Varsity Blues and Patriot games.
Dominick Tartamella:Okay.
Katie:So that's who wrote this.
Katie:And then we have, uh, obviously Patrick Swayze plays Bodhi, Keanu Reeves plays
Katie:Johnny Utah, which that name doesn't seem like a real name, then Gary
Katie:Busey, as you said, he plays Papas, who's kind of the, so this story is
Katie:sort of, it's not a new story, it's kind of the old dog, new dog, f b i
Katie:agents and Papas plays the old timer.
Dominick Tartamella:Right.
Katie:Petty plays Tyler.
Katie:And you all would know her probably from, um, like a league of their own
Dominick Tartamella:Great movie.
Katie:girl.
Katie:Free Willy and then she was in Oranges, the New Black.
Katie:Did you watch
Dominick Tartamella:my wife was actually, when I was rewatching it
Dominick Tartamella:yesterday, my wife mentioned that.
Dominick Tartamella:I didn't know she was in that
Katie:Then John c McGinley, he plays Ben Harp, like the,
Katie:the boss, like the F b I boss.
Katie:And he's, um, most known for Scrubs, Dr.
Katie:Cox in Scrubs,
Dominick Tartamella:right?
Katie:he's in tons of stuff.
Katie:I just, um, listened to an office space podcast and I,
Katie:I forgot that he was in that.
Dominick Tartamella:office space.
Dominick Tartamella:a big
Katie:he plays a good character in that, James Gro or James Laro, I'm
Katie:probably not pronouncing that right.
Katie:He plays Roach who is bodie's like secondhand man,
Dominick Tartamella:right.
Katie:I didn't know him from anything except for he plays, this
Katie:guy that Phoebe goes out on a date with in, in a friend's episode.
Katie:I dunno if you've seen him in anything else.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:He looked familiar.
Dominick Tartamella:And then I forgot to look at his I M D B, honestly.
Dominick Tartamella:I was like, where do I know him from , I feel like I know him
Katie:I think he's done stuff, but nothing, nothing big.
Katie:At least from that I could see.
Katie:And then the two other surfers who are actual surfers and
Katie:they're just part-time actors.
Katie:So John, , Philbin as Nathaniel, he was also in Children of the Corn.
Dominick Tartamella:Oh, okay.
Katie:Bo Jesse Christopher, which that's just a freaking awesome name.
Dominick Tartamella:I gotta that three names.
Katie:three names.
Katie:Three first names.
Dominick Tartamella:Awesome.
Katie:he's grommet and he actually, um, he looks way different now, but he
Katie:has a recurring role or did in N C I S.
Dominick Tartamella:Oh, okay.
Katie:And then we have Anthony Kitas, our Red Hot Chili Peppers front man
Katie:in a small part here playing tone
Dominick Tartamella:I completely forgot he was in this movie, Anthony Keis.
Dominick Tartamella:And then
Katie:When you watched it yesterday
Dominick Tartamella:saw it wow, he's in this, because I know
Dominick Tartamella:Flea did a lot of acting, like he
Katie:Oh, I don't think I did.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:he's in like, uh, I mean, even before, I think he was in the chili
Dominick Tartamella:Peppers, like he pops up and I think like back to the future too, and
Katie:Oh, okay.
Dominick Tartamella:of movies before.
Dominick Tartamella:I think they really got big.
Dominick Tartamella:But I was, I was, I was like, oh, wow.
Dominick Tartamella:Anthony Keis is in this, completely forgot.
Katie:Then the last one that you might know is Lee Turon.
Katie:He plays Rosie in this and he was in Wayne's World, Oz
Katie:and Monster.
Dominick Tartamella:Yes.
Dominick Tartamella:I recognized him.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:He looked familiar.
Katie:I thought so too.
Katie:The score was composed by Mark Isham and he also worked on a river runs
Katie:through it of Mice and Men Warrior Nell Crash and the Black Dahlia.
Katie:So I don't, I didn't really take note of the music when I watched it.
Dominick Tartamella:yeah, it didn't stand out as much, um, to me as well,
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Like legit resume there for the music here.
Katie:And then, so this movie won some M T V music or m t v movie awards.
Dominick Tartamella:okay.
Katie:I don't know if those are still a thing or not, but
Dominick Tartamella:I think they do do them.
Dominick Tartamella:I think they matter a little less than they even did
Dominick Tartamella:but
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Well, and the, the categories were kind of funny too, but, so Keanu
Katie:Reeves won for most desirable male,
Dominick Tartamella:Oh, wow.
Katie:and Patrick was also nominated in the same category.
Katie:And then Point Break was nominated for, uh, M T V movie Award for the best action
Katie:sequence.
Dominick Tartamella:Okay.
Katie:The movie, uh, made 83.5 million on a $24 million budget.
Katie:So That's good.
Dominick Tartamella:good.
Dominick Tartamella:I was gonna say, uh, they did remake it too at one point.
Dominick Tartamella:Later on.
Dominick Tartamella:I never even seen the remake, but
Katie:I was gonna ask you.
Katie:They did in, I haven't seen it either.
Katie:It was a 2015 remake and I don't think it made money.
Dominick Tartamella:No, definitely not
Katie:Uh, I didn't see it.
Katie:See there, there's just some movies.
Katie:I'm like, please don't.
Dominick Tartamella:Well,
Katie:Yeah,
Dominick Tartamella:a movie like this, because it's, I feel like it's just
Dominick Tartamella:based upon having these actors together, especially Swayze at this time, like at
Dominick Tartamella:that with 2015, I don't even remember who the actors were in that movie.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh,
Katie:don't think anybody well known.
Dominick Tartamella:the thing,
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Pat Patrick Swayze was really hot, at this time.
Katie:Like he had quite a run, like Dirty Dancing and then Roadhouse,
Katie:and then Ghost, and then this.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:So he was probably at the top of his fame.
Katie:For those of you who haven't seen point break in a while, the description is that
Katie:in Los Angeles, a gang of bank robbers who call themselves the ex-presidents because
Katie:they wear masks of the ex-presidents, Reagan, Carter, Nixon, and Johnson during
Katie:the robberies, the f b I believes that the members of the gang could be surfers,
Katie:and they send young agent Johnny, Utah undercover at the beach to mix with
Katie:the surfers and gather information.
Katie:Utah meets surfer Bodhi and gets drawn into the lifestyle of his new friend.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:what are your overall thoughts when you re-watched it?
Dominick Tartamella:I like the movie.
Dominick Tartamella:I mean, it gets a little over the top.
Dominick Tartamella:It gets a little goofy at times.
Dominick Tartamella:Um, but as I said, Swayze and Keanu are really like the glue in this
Dominick Tartamella:movie that, that elevate it, you know, if it wasn't them, uh, I think
Dominick Tartamella:it will be a worse movie to me.
Katie:Agreed.
Katie:Now, I don't recall in previous viewings, I probably, because I remember having
Katie:a little bit of a crush on Keanu like a little bit later, probably
Katie:around the speed time he got really famous, but I'm honestly shocked that
Katie:he ended up with such a big career.
Katie:'cause he is really not very good in his early work.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:That's the, uh, I always have this conversation with people when I talk
Dominick Tartamella:about Keanu, like, I, I love the guy, but like, as far as an actor, I don't, I don't
Dominick Tartamella:know if I could say he's a good actor.
Katie:Mm-hmm.
Dominick Tartamella:Um, I, I think charismatic and
Dominick Tartamella:obviously he's a handsome guy.
Katie:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:but I don't, I don't think his acting, I never seen, I've never
Dominick Tartamella:blown away by any of his performances.
Katie:Well I haven't seen like the Matrix and what's the newer one
Katie:that, uh,
Dominick Tartamella:Wick, is that
Katie:John Wick, I hear he is better in those and.
Katie:I guess Patrick is just like electric, I think, and
Katie:most of the things he does.
Katie:So he as Bodhi was really great.
Katie:And I thought that, you know, Johnny, you, Utah, it was fine.
Katie:Like he didn't do a bad job.
Katie:I just, there was a few times yesterday when I re-watched that I was like,
Katie:wow, Keanu's just kind of falling flat
Katie:a little bit.
Dominick Tartamella:Right.
Katie:I don't know,
Katie:but
Dominick Tartamella:that's I feel.
Katie:he's, I hear he is a really good guy,
Dominick Tartamella:Oh,
Katie:So like
Katie:no shade.
Dominick Tartamella:Well, well, even when he's, I mean, 'cause that's, is that like
Dominick Tartamella:a ca that's a California accent, right?
Katie:Mm-hmm.
Dominick Tartamella:of, and then when he is trying to give the fake backstory, Uh,
Katie:oh, he is from Ohio.
Dominick Tartamella:my parents died.
Dominick Tartamella:I'm from Ohio.
Dominick Tartamella:. Like, I just
Katie:uh,
Dominick Tartamella:like, why would she ever believe him?
Katie:also I actually covered this with CCO for the last of the Action
Katie:Heroes Network, just like a one-off.
Katie:Um, and it just happens that I now have a podcast that's covering Patrick.
Katie:So I'm doing point break, but I could not get over the fact that he uses
Katie:his real name when he goes undercover.
Dominick Tartamella:that's
Katie:Did this bother you at all?
Dominick Tartamella:well then I was like, when the movie started, 'cause
Dominick Tartamella:I haven't watched it in a few years, I was like, I'm thinking in my head
Dominick Tartamella:that Johnny Utah is the fake name.
Dominick Tartamella:then I'm realizing like,
Katie:It sounds fake, it sounds like.
Katie:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:right.
Dominick Tartamella:So much that they, they know his football career, uh,
Dominick Tartamella:college, right.
Dominick Tartamella:Where it's like . You couldn't, nobody, they didn't know anybody who
Dominick Tartamella:could track like the trajectory of this guy's life that they found out
Dominick Tartamella:he was a cop or anything like that.
Katie:And he even says, he even tells, uh, Tyler that he went
Katie:to law school and everything.
Katie:So I, I don't know.
Katie:I just find this hard to believe that he, like, why wouldn't he use a fake name?
Katie:I, I've just, I.
Katie:Cannot get over that for some reason.
Dominick Tartamella:uh uh, also to add kind of like a side note, I
Dominick Tartamella:don't know if you've ever watched any of the Fast the Furious movies,
Dominick Tartamella:the First Fast and the Furious
Katie:Like the first two
Dominick Tartamella:the first like a complete rip off of point break.
Dominick Tartamella:It's like the same movie cars.
Dominick Tartamella:I don't know if you ever made that
Katie:It, is.
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: it it really is . It's
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:You know what?
Katie:Well, it's not a new story.
Dominick Tartamella:right.
Katie:it's, you know, the
Dominick Tartamella:cop
Katie:Oh, you goes, gets too deep.
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: Infiltrates world, Right.
Katie:yeah.
Katie:And they're fun stories.
Katie:But now that you say that, and I, it's probably been 20 years
Katie:since I've seen Fast and Furious, but you're right, it totally is.
Dominick Tartamella:It's funny 'cause watching it last night, I
Dominick Tartamella:was like making the connections.
Dominick Tartamella:'cause I watched Fast and Furious recently again and I was like,
Dominick Tartamella:wow, this is the same movie.
Dominick Tartamella:surprised they didn't get sued.
Katie:Did, did that hold up?
Dominick Tartamella:um,
Katie:The original
Dominick Tartamella:point break is definitely better, I think
Katie:better.
Katie:Okay.
Dominick Tartamella:another one that's kind of goofy and,
Dominick Tartamella:you know, VIN Diesel's acting.
Dominick Tartamella:Get it.
Dominick Tartamella:That's
Katie:Oh yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:in itself.
Katie:again, like sometimes I'm like, how do people have
Katie:such like long lasting careers
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:I don't know.
Dominick Tartamella:It's crazy.
Dominick Tartamella:I guess with Keanu I could say it's probably likability.
Dominick Tartamella:I think he's, and like you said, he's probably a nice guy.
Dominick Tartamella:probably gotten him far too.
Katie:yeah.
Katie:Like people like to work with him, et cetera.
Katie:Do you think that Tyler, who, so Keanu Reeves, you know, he gets in with her and
Katie:then he ends up falling in love with her.
Katie:She teaches him to surf and she's actually bodie's ex girlfriend.
Katie:So she's in the surfer community.
Katie:Do you think that she knows that Bodhi and his crew are the bank robbers?
Dominick Tartamella:Um, I think, I think she's gotta,
Dominick Tartamella:right, I think she's gotta assume
Katie:couldn't tell.
Katie:Like they, I, there was no indication I like realistically, like if I
Katie:were, of course you'd know that, but there was no indication she does.
Dominick Tartamella:Maybe she just, I mean, she's gotta know they're
Dominick Tartamella:up to like some kind of criminal activity in their lifestyle.
Dominick Tartamella:I mean, they're not working, obviously.
Dominick Tartamella:They're just floating around on surfboards all day.
Katie:That's true.
Katie:That . Yeah.
Katie:I don't know.
Katie:Some people are independently wealthy.
Katie:I don't know, but yeah, she probably does.
Katie:That's a good point.
Katie:Listeners, what do you think?
Katie:Do you think that Tyler knows or not,
Katie:do you have any favorite scenes
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, I love the chase.
Dominick Tartamella:love the chase When, uh, right before Keanu hurts his leg from that old
Katie:The foot chase.
Katie:Okay.
Katie:Mm-hmm.
Dominick Tartamella:I was like really engaged at that part.
Dominick Tartamella:I forgot how good that was.
Dominick Tartamella:I also love all the, um, the bank robbery stuff.
Dominick Tartamella:'cause I just like the imagery of the presidents, the Nixon and
Dominick Tartamella:all the stupid stuff they do.
Katie:and that they call each other like, Hey Dick,
Dominick Tartamella:Right,
Katie:it's ready to go.
Dominick Tartamella:right.
Katie:I'm not a crook
Dominick Tartamella:I'm running, I'm running crook.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah, he is doing the voice and showing his ass and stuff.
Dominick Tartamella:It was, I thought it was all good.
Dominick Tartamella:all
Katie:It is funny.
Dominick Tartamella:And sky, the skydiving stuff's cool
Katie:I really liked the skydiving stuff.
Dominick Tartamella:I don't know.
Dominick Tartamella:I mean, I heard that Swayze did some of real, of the real
Dominick Tartamella:skydiving 'cause he was a skydiver.
Katie:Yeah, well,
Dominick Tartamella:is.
Katie:I read that too, and also I read his book.
Katie:I'm a big Swayze fan.
Katie:I, this man can do literally anything.
Katie:So yes, he did some of the surf, like not obviously not the major surfing, but
Katie:a lot of the shots he learned to surf.
Katie:Um, and then he did do, 55 jumps in total for this movie.
Katie:So he did, he was actually an accomplished, fairly
Katie:accomplished skydiver.
Katie:Yeah,
Dominick Tartamella:I gotta, I gotta give like Catherine
Dominick Tartamella:Bigelow credit too for that.
Dominick Tartamella:The scene at the end when they, uh, when Keanu jumps out without the shoot and
Dominick Tartamella:stuff, it all, it looks pretty good.
Dominick Tartamella:It holds up pretty good as far as like, uh, compared to modern day stuff.
Dominick Tartamella:, you don't
Katie:agreed.
Dominick Tartamella:watching, you know, some guy that's not
Dominick Tartamella:Keanu or you're watching like a blue screen or anything like that.
Dominick Tartamella:It seems very real.
Katie:I agree.
Katie:And I like, that's partially why I like older movies.
Katie:I, I very much appreciate more practical effects and stunt men doing stunts and, or
Katie:even the actors doing a lot of the stunts.
Katie:But I, that scene was probably my favorite scene.
Katie:That final, um, airplane jump.
Dominick Tartamella:right?
Katie:It was like the ultimate game of chicken where I could, I was like,
Katie:I can't believe he's jumping out of a plane with no shoot and just in hopes
Dominick Tartamella:Right.
Katie:he will eventually catch up to Patrick Swayze and
Dominick Tartamella:amazing,
Katie:he has to drop the gun like you have to in order to pull
Katie:the, like bodie's willing to die.
Katie:He's like, I don't care.
Katie:I'll die.
Katie:Big, big whoop.
Katie:But if you wanna live, you have to drop the gun to pull the chute.
Katie:And yeah, I really liked that scene.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:And I think it gives, it gives them another like, level of a mutual respect
Dominick Tartamella:for them, uh, for each other because they realize they're both psychos,
Dominick Tartamella:, like Swayze's for him to pull it, and then, you know, he's not pulling it
Dominick Tartamella:and then he finally drops the gun.
Dominick Tartamella:But I,
Katie:They are both psychos.
Katie:I actually, this viewing Especially a few times I was a little confused
Katie:about both of their motivations.
Katie:So I was curious to get your thoughts.
Katie:So Bodhi is all this, you know, I'm one with the ocean and, you
Katie:know, peace, love all of that.
Katie:Uh, but then why so why doesn't he call Rosie to let Tyler go before
Katie:he jumps like Johnny asks him to
Dominick Tartamella:right.
Katie:be?
Katie:Do you know what I mean?
Katie:He's like, you, she served her purpose.
Katie:You could die.
Katie:Like, you might not make it to the meat point to let her go.
Katie:What do you think about that
Dominick Tartamella:I mean, I just feel like, and I guess this is something with
Dominick Tartamella:Patrick Swayze playing this villain, that he's just more, he's so much more likable
Dominick Tartamella:to me because it's Patrick Swayze, whereas like, I don't know if that's how the
Dominick Tartamella:character was written, you know, where,
Katie:Oh,
Dominick Tartamella:you know, like
Katie:good point.
Dominick Tartamella:watching him do all these, like, because even, especially
Dominick Tartamella:towards the end when he gets really like diabolical and they kidnap her, and I'm
Dominick Tartamella:still sitting there liking him, but I'm like, why is he doing this at the end?
Katie:Yeah, I think that's what it is.
Katie:I don't think we're supposed to, it's because we like Patrick
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: I yeah, trying to say.
Katie:I think it's, it's getting mixed because we have that, you know,
Katie:past experience with Swayze and liking Swayze, so we're kind of
Katie:sitting there scratching our heads.
Katie:But I mean, I get, he's supposed to be the villain, you know, he's
Katie:a, he kills that cop in the church.
Katie:Like once he kills the, uh, in the church, in the, in the bank,
Katie:when he cop, that cop, and he shoots that cop and he kills him.
Katie:It's kind of like, all right, now he's crossed a line, you know?
Katie:You know he's gonna die at some point after that.
Katie:Well, that's another thing.
Katie:A few times that I'm confused about the Bodhi character and the Johnny character.
Katie:So, well, why does he, so they have rules and that's how they've
Katie:skated by this whole time.
Katie:They just get enough money.
Katie:They, they don't get greedy and go into the vault.
Katie:That's the rule.
Katie:Get in, get out, be done.
Katie:Nobody gets hurt.
Katie:Like that's the rules.
Katie:But then the last, in the last robbery, he breaks his own.
Katie:Why do you think he does that?
Dominick Tartamella:That I'm gonna have to put on maybe the writing, you
Dominick Tartamella:know, where they just throw away a lot of the, the stuff that he stands for.
Dominick Tartamella:'cause even when Keanu's going after them, at that point, he
Dominick Tartamella:stops the guy from shooting him.
Dominick Tartamella:Um, even that, like, why did he kill?
Dominick Tartamella:I, I wasn't expecting it to go that way either, where he just, kills people and
Katie:I guess we needed it for the story to move forward.
Katie:Um, but yeah, so I guess at the end of the movie, I'm, I'm sort of now wondering
Katie:is he really this Bodhi Saba character?
Dominick Tartamella:right, right.
Katie:or is he just like every other selfish cult leader
Dominick Tartamella:Exactly.
Katie:it all, you know?
Dominick Tartamella:just like, of crap?
Dominick Tartamella:Another, another thief, essentially, you know, where he is, just, he's going money.
Dominick Tartamella:Maybe that's what he You know, the character that he presents to
Dominick Tartamella:people is the lie he tells himself
Katie:yeah.
Katie:Like stick it to the system.
Katie:That's what's keeping us down and you know, but that's what
Katie:Keanu's character buys into
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:ultimately.
Katie:Right.
Dominick Tartamella:right?
Dominick Tartamella:'cause
Katie:And then, so then I'm confused about the end with Keanu then
Katie:too, like his motivation, right?
Katie:Because he is now at the time, so listeners, so I'm all over the place.
Katie:Apologies.
Katie:So there's a, So Patrick Swayze's character gets away.
Katie:Then like sometime later, I don't know, six months, a year later, we
Katie:meet them at Bells Beach where they've been talking about this whole time.
Katie:Um, in Australia, it's this 50 year storm.
Katie:It's supposed to be the ultimate ride and you'll probably die doing it.
Katie:And if you're like, if you're a real surfer, you're willing, you
Katie:know, that's Bodie's whole deal
Katie:is the ultimate ride.
Katie:And it's a 50 year storm.
Katie:So that's where Johnny Utah meets up with him again and he catches him.
Katie:But by this time, so Johnny's motivation, he's already, now he
Katie:tells Patrick Swayze's character, he tells Bodhi, yeah, I surf every day.
Katie:Like you can see his hairs longer and they have this big fight.
Katie:And he ends up handcuffing Bodhi.
Katie:But then Bodhi easily talks him into Uncuffing him, you know,
Katie:just, this is my whole life has been leading up to this moment.
Katie:Just let me go catch the ultimate ride.
Katie:And he does.
Katie:And then he tosses his, um, he tosses his badge.
Katie:So it's like, was it just so that he could prove to himself that he caught
Katie:him, but that he, he was already over the system, the man, so to speak.
Dominick Tartamella:I feel like, especially the dialogue, I don't remember
Dominick Tartamella:the exact dialogue, but I feel like he's really . He, he, the, the part of
Dominick Tartamella:him that was a cop and a good cop, he feels obligated to arrest Patrick Swayze
Dominick Tartamella:because he killed, you know, because he robbed, because he was a criminal.
Dominick Tartamella:But I, like, I, that's the thing too.
Dominick Tartamella:I feel like maybe if, if Swayze didn't, know, shoot anybody and,
Dominick Tartamella:and, and murder anybody, maybe he go.
Dominick Tartamella:But I feel like because he was a cop, he had to go that door.
Dominick Tartamella:I think he was gonna throw his badge away.
Dominick Tartamella:Anyway, I think it was just like, let me close this chapter off
Dominick Tartamella:and guy to close the book on that
Katie:But then he lets him go
Dominick Tartamella:well, him go into probably his suicide, right?
Dominick Tartamella:I mean,
Katie:it
Katie:for sure.
Dominick Tartamella:himself.
Katie:he is, but it's, he's easily talked.
Katie:I mean, it's a, it's a, it's compassionate,
Katie:know?
Katie:It's his, it's sort of like they do have like a kinship now, but I, yeah,
Katie:I guess it was a little confusing to me about the character's motivation.
Katie:Like,
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Katie:you know, like, you easily let him go.
Katie:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:I feel like they're what they attempted to show.
Dominick Tartamella:It really didn't come out Right.
Dominick Tartamella:Maybe, you know, um, they, they're basically both taking qualities from each
Dominick Tartamella:other, I feel like, and they're trying to
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Oh, good.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Good point.
Dominick Tartamella:yeah, I don't think it was executed as
Dominick Tartamella:well as it as it could have been.
Katie:Well, I really did like it.
Katie:I mean, just as a casual viewer, I, a viewer, I thought that was pretty awesome.
Katie:And I, I'm glad that that's how it ended, that he did get to get his ultimate ride.
Katie:And, and then everybody, when's he coming back?
Katie:When's he coming back?
Katie:He, he's not coming back.
Dominick Tartamella:coming back.
Katie:So I did like that, but then he tosses his badge, so I'm like,
Katie:Hmm, I don't know.
Dominick Tartamella:Right.
Dominick Tartamella:He's done, he's basically gonna become, Johnny Utah's just
Dominick Tartamella:gonna become a surfer now.
Dominick Tartamella:That's it.
Dominick Tartamella:His, his, his police days are done.
Katie:Now, how is he going to fund this surf lifestyle?
Dominick Tartamella:Maybe, I don't know, maybe he turns to a life of crime.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:He's, he's got the lessons now.
Katie:Uh, movies.
Katie:I also really loved how Patrick Swayze.
Katie:So Bodie's character has this, like, all knowing laugh.
Katie:It's a laugh, but it's more of a statement.
Katie:you know what I'm talking about?
Katie:Like, he'll laugh in a way that just like, it's a statement.
Katie:And I, I love that Patrick Swayze really pulls it off.
Dominick Tartamella:That's, yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:That's his presence is just, he's great.
Katie:He really is.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:Oh, I had forgotten that Papas dies.
Katie:Did you, were you surprised by that when you re-watched it?
Dominick Tartamella:as well.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:I, I completely forgot.
Dominick Tartamella:And that's the thing too.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, you know, he's responsible to bring that up with Keanu Reeves coming back.
Dominick Tartamella:He's his partner.
Dominick Tartamella:He killed
Dominick Tartamella:you know, almost like a father figure to him.
Dominick Tartamella:So he had
Dominick Tartamella:that door.
Dominick Tartamella:He couldn't let Bodhi get away.
Katie:I took note of a scene where Papa's, um, requests that Johnny go
Katie:get him a couple of meatball sandwiches from some like sandwich place.
Katie:So Johnny goes and he orders two meatball sandwiches and then he gets a
Katie:tuna on wheat or something boring like that for himself and two lemonades.
Katie:And the bill was like less than $8.
Dominick Tartamella:I, I noted that too.
Dominick Tartamella:I, I, it was, I said that to my wife, I was like, wow.
Dominick Tartamella:Imagine $7 for all that food,
Katie:I mean, that wasn't, I mean, 91 I guess like 30, 30 years ago.
Katie:But dang, that's
Katie:cheap food.
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: I think it was like 45
Katie:yeah,
Dominick Tartamella:like that.
Katie:and it was LA too.
Katie:It wasn't like it was Ohio
Dominick Tartamella:right.
Katie:somewhere, you know, wherever.
Katie:They made me hungry for a sandwich.
Dominick Tartamella:for?
Dominick Tartamella:Three Meatball sandwiches.
Katie:I would do a vegan meatball sandwich
Katie:so there's some trivia.
Dominick Tartamella:Cool.
Katie:We already talked about Patrick Swayze's, ability
Katie:with Surfing and Skydiving.
Katie:Did you know that there were some additional titles before
Katie:they came up with Point Break?
Katie:Were you aware of any other, like possible titles?
Dominick Tartamella:no, I don't recall any that stand out in my head.
Dominick Tartamella:were some of them?
Katie:Well, you know, the Doors Song Riders on the Storm,
Dominick Tartamella:Yes.
Katie:that was a, that was one of the titles, which wouldn't have been bad,
Dominick Tartamella:Wouldn't have
Katie:think.
Katie:That would've been Ben.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:And then another title was just Johnny Utah,
Dominick Tartamella:Johnny Utah.
Katie:just Johnny Utah.
Katie:It does sound like a fake name
Katie:like a superhero or something.
Dominick Tartamella:that's, that.
Dominick Tartamella:That would've been a little strange.
Dominick Tartamella:calling it
Katie:We wouldn't know what it was.
Katie:I guess, John Wick is sort of that way.
Katie:Like you don't, it's just a name.
Dominick Tartamella:Johnny Mnemonic too.
Dominick Tartamella:That would've been three
Katie:Oh yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:Keanu Reeves has
Katie:I forgot about that.
Dominick Tartamella:the title.
Katie:He likes the name John or it fits him.
Katie:apparently Point break wasn't chosen of the title until they
Katie:were halfway through filming
Katie:movie.
Dominick Tartamella:wow.
Dominick Tartamella:A good title though.
Dominick Tartamella:Point Frank's, uh,
Katie:It is,
Dominick Tartamella:title.
Katie:it is.
Katie:Bigelow wanted the actors to do their own fight scenes, which good on you, Bigelow.
Katie:Yeah, that's always helpful.
Katie:they, they had training se uh, sessions on the weekends for the actors,
Katie:to do with the stunt coordinator
Dominick Tartamella:Okay.
Katie:and allegedly guess who was the only one not president to do this?
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: out of all the actors,
Katie:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:Keis,
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:How'd you know?
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: she's busy making music.
Katie:Probably
Katie:So yeah, he, he was the only one who didn't show up or, or whatnot,
Katie:according to the research that I found.
Katie:Therefore, his character, um, gets knocked out with one punch
Katie:during that first fight sequence.
Dominick Tartamella:that makes sense.
Katie:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:That's funny.
Katie:And Patrick Swayze cracked four ribs while filming the surfing scenes.
Dominick Tartamella:And he, did I take it he tried to do a
Dominick Tartamella:lot of his surfing himself or
Katie:Well, some of the, like, the shots where it was clear, like a closeup
Katie:shot where they had it had to be him.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:then did have those, most of the long, like the surfing shots from far
Katie:away were those other two surfers.
Katie:Swayze, so he wore the Reagan mask.
Katie:And then Roach, his like right hand guy, wore, uh, Nixon.
Katie:then the other two guys, Carter and L B J, were like real surfers
Dominick Tartamella:Uh,
Katie:kind of d do acting on the side.
Katie:So I think a lot of the surfing sequences portrayed the latter too.
Dominick Tartamella:Okay.
Dominick Tartamella:That makes sense.
Dominick Tartamella:Safer, you know,
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Have you surfed, do you
Dominick Tartamella:I've never surfed, I've bookie boarded, which
Dominick Tartamella:I don't even like, I don't even know if that could be considered anything.
Dominick Tartamella:I've, I've gotten hit by waves and been ripped apart on the beach.
Katie:That's something, yeah.
Katie:I, surfing is one of those things to me, sort of like ice
Katie:skating, like figure skating
Katie:gymnastics.
Katie:I'm like, how's that even
Katie:possible?
Katie:I,
Dominick Tartamella:don't even know.
Katie:it's my brain can't quite.
Dominick Tartamella:no, you gotta be really, I guess, disciplined and
Dominick Tartamella:athletic just to jump on that board.
Dominick Tartamella:And at the right timing.
Dominick Tartamella:I don't, I don't know, maybe one day.
Dominick Tartamella:Maybe one day, maybe in a, maybe later in life,
Katie:You are gonna pick up surfing.
Dominick Tartamella:pick up surfing.
Katie:Okay.
Dominick Tartamella:I'm gonna
Dominick Tartamella:to Johnny, Utah.
Katie:Your second, second, part of your life, you'll go,
Katie:um, you'll go into the F B I.
Dominick Tartamella:right.
Dominick Tartamella:get the hair transplant to look like, uh, Patrick Swayze's Hair
Katie:Oh, funny.
Katie:I always find alternative casting.
Katie:Very interesting.
Katie:Have you heard of any of these?
Katie:Any, like any,
Dominick Tartamella:I haven't heard of any of the point break.
Dominick Tartamella:No.
Katie:So the studio and the producers wanted someone
Katie:higher profile for Johnny Utah.
Katie:But Bigelow insisted on Reeves.
Katie:I'm not sure why, but it was a good movie with, with him in it.
Katie:But they wanted, um, like a Johnny Depp type.
Dominick Tartamella:Okay.
Dominick Tartamella:I could see that.
Dominick Tartamella:I could have saw Johnny
Katie:I can too.
Katie:I he, I can totally see Johnny Depp doing a fabulous Johnny Utah
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Dominick Tartamella:. I
Katie:different movie.
Dominick Tartamella:uh, why she was so insistent about Keanu.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:I should have looked into that more.
Katie:Shouldn't I have?
Dominick Tartamella:I mean, who knows?
Dominick Tartamella:It could have been just a personal relationship.
Dominick Tartamella:Right.
Katie:So Patrick Swayze originally auditioned for the Jonie, Utah role
Dominick Tartamella:Okay.
Katie:instead of the Bodhi role.
Katie:They must have not thought he was right for that and
Katie:offered him the role of Bodhi.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:Matthew Broderick was originally offered the role of Johnny Utah.
Dominick Tartamella:Ooh.
Dominick Tartamella:don't one.
Dominick Tartamella:I can't pitch her.
Dominick Tartamella:No.
Dominick Tartamella:I like
Katie:No, I can't.
Dominick Tartamella:I love First Bueller.
Dominick Tartamella:You know, I like him as an actor,
Katie:I agreed.
Katie:Agreed.
Dominick Tartamella:him, uh, uh, in that role.
Katie:I do not.
Katie:and then obviously, so we talked about Johnny Depp others, uh,
Katie:for the role of Johnny Utah.
Katie:Charlie Sheen.
Dominick Tartamella:Okay.
Dominick Tartamella:Sheen.
Dominick Tartamella:I
Dominick Tartamella:I could maybe see Charlie Sheen
Katie:Willem Defoe,
Dominick Tartamella:as
Katie:which I guess he wouldn't be young.
Katie:He wouldn't be like the young buck.
Katie:I don't, I mean, he's a good actor, right?
Katie:He could probably, it just wouldn't be like this young,
Katie:um, like I hurt my knee playing,
Katie:I don't know.
Dominick Tartamella:Right?
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah, it would definitely be a different movie.
Katie:And then Val Kilmer, which I could see Val Kilmer.
Dominick Tartamella:Val Kilmer I could see as well.
Dominick Tartamella:Definitely see Doc Kilmer.
Katie:and then from a directorial standpoint, they
Katie:originally wanted Ridley Scott.
Katie:To direct this,
Katie:but he was doing film on Louise
Katie:at this time or at that time also.
Katie:Great movie.
Dominick Tartamella:Yes.
Dominick Tartamella:Good
Katie:So, but yeah, I didn't, I had, I didn't even know who Katherine Bigelow
Katie:was before, like The Hurt Locker.
Katie:So
Dominick Tartamella:She also did a movie, uh, I wanna say it was either a year,
Dominick Tartamella:but that movie Near Dark with like the
Dominick Tartamella:Vamp Bill, bill Paxton's in it, I believe.
Katie:I didn't see that movie, but I know what you're talking about.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:She Those were like this and that were her earlier, uh, things.
Dominick Tartamella:Then she came back with like her locker, uh, later on.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:She's a good director.
Dominick Tartamella:I like her stuff.
Katie:I liked those two, like those Hurt Locker and, um, dark
Katie:30, those, I liked both of those.
Katie:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah, she's, she's definitely good.
Katie:So I talked about this, this little tidbit 'cause I recently covered
Katie:dirty dancing, which was super fun.
Katie:So I covered this little tidbit there too.
Katie:So check out the dirty dancing episode everyone.
Katie:But, so when Bodhi is introduced to Johnny, Utah on the beach, he remarks
Katie:that Utah's surfboard reminds him of a 57 Chevy that he used to have.
Katie:And the car that Patrick Swayze drove in dirty Dancing was a 57 Chevy.
Dominick Tartamella:wow.
Dominick Tartamella:I didn't even make that awesome.
Katie:I think those, I love those little things in movies.
Dominick Tartamella:Easter eggs.
Katie:apparently the F word was used, uh, lots.
Katie:Do you have any guess what the count was
Dominick Tartamella:I wanna say,
Katie:in?
Dominick Tartamella:close to a hundred.
Katie:Yeah,
Dominick Tartamella:it was.
Katie:times.
Katie:105 times.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Good guess.
Dominick Tartamella:I know my f word counts.
Katie:did you pick up on the other little, like east drag calling back
Katie:to another Patrick Swayze role?
Dominick Tartamella:I, I thought I heard something about, uh, they said
Dominick Tartamella:something about Roadhouse, didn't they?
Dominick Tartamella:Am I, am I crazy?
Dominick Tartamella:I thought I caught something.
Katie:No, you're not.
Katie:You're not.
Katie:And I liked your, I heard your episode on Roadhouse.
Katie:Do you and your brother did?
Katie:That was funny.
Katie:I look, yeah.
Katie:Okay.
Dominick Tartamella:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:That was
Katie:Yeah, you guys have to check that out.
Katie:so yeah, when, so Johnny's like talking about, he's like staking out, uh, the
Katie:movements of Bodhi and so he's listing the places where he followed Bodhi
Katie:to, and he, in that list, he goes to Tower Records, which, that was a whole
Dominick Tartamella:right.
Katie:flashback to 1991.
Katie:Um, and then he had, he had lunch at Patrick's Roadhouse,
Katie:which was a nod to his,
Dominick Tartamella:It
Katie:his Roadhouse movie.
Dominick Tartamella:I love that.
Dominick Tartamella:I love when they do that.
Katie:I do too.
Katie:via Con Dios.
Katie:Via Con Dios, they say a few times.
Dominick Tartamella:right?
Katie:I like that.
Katie:Go with God.
Dominick Tartamella:Con Diaz.
Dominick Tartamella:. I Keanu
Katie:that a surfer thing
Dominick Tartamella:I
Katie:or It's in a mo It's in movies.
Katie:A
Dominick Tartamella:I just
Katie:Do it again.
Dominick Tartamella:via Con Diaz.
Katie:you do pretty good impressions.
Dominick Tartamella:Thank you.
Dominick Tartamella:I try, I haven't, I gotta, I gotta work on a Patrick Swayze one.
Dominick Tartamella:I know.
Dominick Tartamella:Me and my brother just yell random Roadhouse quotes to each other sometimes.
Dominick Tartamella:But I haven't really polished that.
Dominick Tartamella:I gotta work on that.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:I don't know if he has a
Dominick Tartamella:it's, he's a, he's definitely a hard one to do.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: Keanu's a 'cause Keanu just.
Katie:Especially everything he says.
Katie:You could just, you could just get an impression off of watching
Katie:Bill and Ted with all the goofy stuff he says, did the Hmong girls
Katie:rule China ? Just him saying that.
Katie:Hmong girls yeah.
Katie:Patrick's more of like, he's an everyman.
Katie:Like he and Kurt Russell.
Katie:They don't have, like, there's not, um, it's not like cartoony
Katie:Dominick Tartamella: If you had do you pick?
Katie:Kurt Russell.
Katie:Patrick Swayze.
Katie:Patrick
Katie:Patrick Swayze.
Katie:What about you?
Dominick Tartamella:ah, don't know.
Dominick Tartamella:It might, be a hard choice, but I might have to go Kurt Russell.
Dominick Tartamella:I don't know what it is.
Dominick Tartamella:Something about Kurt Russell
Katie:What I've noticed by doing this is it seems as though more men like Kurt
Katie:better and more women like Patrick better.
Dominick Tartamella:I could see
Katie:I don't know that's, you know, anecdotal
Katie:evidence,
Dominick Tartamella:Right.
Dominick Tartamella:I think Dirty Dancing a lot of points with the ladies.
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Yeah.
Dominick Tartamella:is
Katie:it, it certainly does.
Dominick Tartamella:so it's like one of those things when you, when you think
Dominick Tartamella:about the, the actor, I don't think Kurt Russell doesn't have a movie like that.
Dominick Tartamella:Right.
Dominick Tartamella:Thinking back on his filmography, I don't think he has a movie that would
Dominick Tartamella:be, more women maybe gravitate, uh,
Katie:like super where he's just like a very like sensual
Dominick Tartamella:right?
Katie:role.
Katie:I can't think of one either.
Katie:The other thing too is that Patrick is just so multi-talented.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Katie:I would
Katie:recommend like reading his book, but yeah, he's just
Dominick Tartamella:What's the name gotta, I gotta read that.
Katie:well, there's more than one, but it's, uh, oh shoot.
Katie:I, I think it's called the time of my Life.
Dominick Tartamella:I gotta look that up.
Katie:And he wrote it like right before his death with
Katie:he co-wrote it with his wife.
Katie:Um, so I think that's kind of another thing is that, um, he's no
Katie:longer with us and so I miss him.
Dominick Tartamella:Mm-hmm.
Dominick Tartamella:, and like you said, multi-talented, danced, sing,
Katie:Yeah.
Katie:Actually I was just doing some research, research for the Roadhouse
Katie:episode and, um, he, he sang a couple songs on that soundtrack.
Dominick Tartamella:Oh, and the Roadhouse soundtrack.
Dominick Tartamella:Did he?
Dominick Tartamella:Oh, wow.
Dominick Tartamella:I didn't even know that.
Dominick Tartamella:I that
Katie:I didn't, I didn't either.
Katie:I'm, but I'm covering that, that one soon
Katie:and, I mean obviously we know that a dancing one, Patrick Swayze,
Katie:he's, uh, he flew planes that he and Kurt both had their pilot's license,
Dominick Tartamella:Right?
Katie:point break is definitely action packed and I can never get
Katie:too much Swayze, so it was exciting being back in 1991 for a while, but
Katie:we must now return to present day
Katie:next,
Dominick Tartamella:the dark gloomy 2023
Katie:it's right.
Katie:Until the next retro made episode you guys, then we'll go back in time again.
Katie:Dom, it was a pleasure talking about 91 with you and the Wild ride.
Katie:That is point break.
Katie:Do you have any closing thoughts about the movie or Patrick or Kurt or,
Katie:and tell us where we can all find you
Dominick Tartamella:okay.
Dominick Tartamella:Um, I, I like the movie.
Dominick Tartamella:I think it's a good movie.
Dominick Tartamella:I think if you've never seen it, it's definitely worth watching.
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, it's definitely a product of its time, you know, with the surfing and just
Dominick Tartamella:I said, Keanu running around doing his thing, and Swayze, uh, it's, you know,
Dominick Tartamella:not a great movie, but it's, it's fun.
Dominick Tartamella:It's fun to be had point break.
Katie:Agreed.
Katie:Where can we find you?
Dominick Tartamella:Uh, you could find me, uh, on my podcast movie Thoughts.
Dominick Tartamella:It's on Spotify, iTunes, and then you could also find me on Twitter,
Dominick Tartamella:TikTok and Instagram at, uh, dom solo reels where I post some stupid,
Dominick Tartamella:sometimes I do impressions and stupid videos and stuff like that.
Katie:It is fun and you are good at impressions.
Katie:It's very fun.
Katie:I would highly recommend everyone check out Dom's Creative side and thank you
Katie:all for listening or watching on YouTube.
Katie:Please be sure to follow the show and consider giving it a rating or a review
Katie:and keep those YouTube comments coming.
