Episode 24

Breakdown (stressfully intense!) | S1E24

Today, we travel back to May 1997 for another road thriller, but this time with our everyman, Kurt Russell, in Breakdown. And of course, we’ll open the time capsule to get us in the 1997 mindset.

We're lucky to have actual movie-makers joining me today -  Bill Bant & Jason Masek from All 80s Movies Podcast. Born in Philadelphia, Bill Bant would attend film school at the University of Miami where he met Jason Masek and collaborated on Bill's first student film project. After college, Bill would travel the United States entertaining sports fans as a member of the Sports Magic Team. From there, he joined the Miami Dolphins for 10 years as a member of the Marketing/Special Events Department. He would then move to California and pursue his dream of becoming a film maker. After writing two Award Winning short films, which starred Jason Masek, the pandemic would shut down production leaving Jason and Bill to create the "All '80s Movies Podcast" which is now in its 4th season. The podcast covers movies that Jason and Bill grew up with that made them want to make movies and other great or bad movies from the decade. Here's where you can find them:

Hello, hello, I'm Katie and welcome to Retro

2

:

Made, your pop culture rewind.

3

:

Today we travel back to 1997,

May to be exact, for another road

4

:

thriller, but this time with our

everyman Kurt Russell in Breakdown.

5

:

And of course we will open

the time capsule so we can get

6

:

into the 1997 frame of mind.

7

:

If you're watching on YouTube, please make

sure to hit the subscribe button below

8

:

this video, if you haven't already, and if

you're listening to the audio and enjoying

9

:

the show, please help the show grow by

taking a moment to leave a review and

10

:

preferably a five star one, if you can.

11

:

Thank you so much.

12

:

Now, today is a first.

13

:

we have a team that is an

actual movie making duo.

14

:

of just me , not knowing anything about

movie making, we have some pros here.

15

:

Bill Bandt and Jason Masik

from All 80s Movies Podcast.

16

:

That's a show that actually grew

out of the pandemic when the movie

17

:

production was shut down and so they

actually previously wrote two award

18

:

winning short films and Jason Stark.

19

:

Bill, Jason, Thank you

so much for joining me.

20

:

Please tell us all about your show.

21

:

Yeah.

22

:

So we're name of our show is the

all eighties movies podcast, and

23

:

it's a podcast that talks about the

blockbusters, the flops and everything

24

:

in between from eighties films.

25

:

And the reason we picked that

is Jason and I met in film

26

:

school in the early nineties.

27

:

And that was really the movies that,

Made us love movies and made us want

28

:

to get into trying to make movies.

29

:

So, when the pandemic happened,

everything shut down and we couldn't do

30

:

any projects at the time I came to Jason

like, Hey, why don't we do a podcast?

31

:

I mean, most of the time when we get

together, after we were finished talking

32

:

about upcoming projects and stuff, we

would just talk about movies all the time.

33

:

So I thought this would just be a great

venue to share our love for 80s films.

34

:

Jason Masek: Yeah, 100%.

35

:

And again, thank you.

36

:

Thank you so much, Katie,

for having us on your show.

37

:

We're both fans and yes, we like

to think of ourselves as the, the

38

:

every men of 80s movies podcasts,

39

:

but,

40

:

for sure we did have,

41

:

I guess, somewhat typical beginnings in

that a lot of film fans will do round

42

:

table discussions among their friends.

43

:

that's where a lot of these things

spawned from, it is just inevitable

44

:

when our friends get together that we

go back in time and we go back to the

45

:

films that shaped us and got us into

the entertainment industry, if you will.

46

:

And it was the eighties was a

really, really magical time for us.

47

:

The time of innovation,

extreme imagination discovery.

48

:

And so.

49

:

It's just, you know, that

was our, that's our decade.

50

:

That's our inspiration.

51

:

And for us, I, you know, we do cover

all of these movies from the eighties,

52

:

but we really do like to do the more

niche type of films, the smaller

53

:

films that, know, might strike a nerve

mentally, emotionally, maybe physically.

54

:

to go back to that time, to remember

where we were, who we were with,

55

:

it's really nostalgia heavy.

56

:

So we really, we do get into

some of the fields, if you will.

57

:

A little bit with this which is

something we just really enjoy

58

:

doing.

59

:

Katie: We're all about nostalgia here.

60

:

And despite your focusing

on the 80s, we're

61

:

actually covering a 90s movie today,

62

:

Bill: I think that's the one thing

we love about being guests on

63

:

shows is that we get Hey, we

don't have to do an 80s movie.

64

:

That's fine.

65

:

We can, we can talk outside our decade.

66

:

That's great.

67

:

Katie: Well, let's open that

time capsule from May of:

68

:

So May was kind of ending

the 96 to 97 TV season.

69

:

So the top Nielsen rated shows

for that particular season, we

70

:

have ER, Seinfeld, Suddenly Susan.

71

:

Do you guys remember that

72

:

show with Brooke Shields?

73

:

Suddenly

74

:

Bill: remember it.

75

:

Yeah.

76

:

I didn't, I didn't watch it to be honest.

77

:

Katie: I do vaguely and I,

I almost, I want to say that

78

:

Bender from The Breakfast Club

79

:

was like her boss in it with

80

:

Jason Masek: Judd

81

:

Bill: Oh yeah, that's right.

82

:

That's right.

83

:

Jason Masek: I've totally forgot.

84

:

He was definitely, yeah,

85

:

he was on that show.

86

:

That's

87

:

Katie: Yeah.

88

:

Of course, Friends.

89

:

You can't have a top 90s

season without Friends.

90

:

The Naked Truth, which was

that show with Taya Leone.

91

:

I don't think it lasted very long, but it

was like the number five show that season.

92

:

Like a newspaper reporter.

93

:

Bill: forgot about that one.

94

:

Katie: something.

95

:

Bill: Yeah.

96

:

I remember seeing her the first time

in Bad Boys, and being like, who is

97

:

Jason Masek: Yeah.

98

:

Same here.

99

:

Katie: oh, I loved her.

100

:

Oh my gosh.

101

:

I

102

:

loved Hey Leonie, but

yeah, Bad Boys for me

103

:

Bill: Yeah.

104

:

Katie: There was a show that I'm curious

if you guys are familiar with it.

105

:

I was not.

106

:

And it apparently lasted for

two seasons on NBC called Fired

107

:

Up.

108

:

Does it sound

109

:

ringing a bell at all?

110

:

Bill: The title sounds prominent

111

:

Katie: it started Sharon Lawrence

and she plays a self centered

112

:

promotions exec and Leah Remini

113

:

before King of Queens.

114

:

And she was the mouthy assistant, which

that's perfect for Leah and they get

115

:

fired from their jobs and then they team

up to create an equal partner business.

116

:

It also had Mark, pronouncing

his name incorrectly,

117

:

Feuerstein and Jonathan Banks.

118

:

Jason Masek: Oh wow.

119

:

cool.

120

:

Jonathan

121

:

Banks.

122

:

Very cool.

123

:

Big fan of his.

124

:

Katie: Yeah,

125

:

Jason Masek: Yeah, not

126

:

familiar.

127

:

I have no idea what that show is about.

128

:

I've never heard of it.

129

:

Yeah.

130

:

Katie: Okay.

131

:

Me neither, but it's somehow, you know, it

was like the number one to the seven show

132

:

Jason Masek: right.

133

:

It had

134

:

Katie: single guy too.

135

:

Yeah.

136

:

The single guy had its moment.

137

:

as well.

138

:

And then home improvement

139

:

Bill: Yes.

140

:

Katie: touched by an angel,

which I never watched, but that

141

:

must've been a pretty big show.

142

:

Bill: Yeah, I think

143

:

Jason Masek: one that you would always

144

:

hear about in popular

145

:

culture.

146

:

I mean,

147

:

you couldn't avoid it.

148

:

You couldn't avoid the

149

:

title alone, but I also was not.

150

:

Involved in

151

:

I just didn't watch it.

152

:

Just wasn't

153

:

Bill: was that

154

:

Katie: Yeah.

155

:

It's not kind of not my jam either.

156

:

Bill: was that Sunday Nights?

157

:

That was, was that Sunday Nights?

158

:

That was kind of like counter

programming to football kind of show?

159

:

Katie: Yes,

160

:

and it, I, I think it's

probably geared towards

161

:

women.

162

:

So that, that totally tracks.

163

:

And then also NYPD Blue was like the

last rounding out our, our top rated.

164

:

But there were some notable finales.

165

:

Roseanne, this was its final

166

:

Jason Masek: Oh, wow.

167

:

Sure.

168

:

Katie: hmm.

169

:

I loved Roseanne, but yeah, the

final season wasn't its best

170

:

for sure.

171

:

I think, is that when they won the

172

:

Bill: Oh yeah, they won

the lottery, and then,

173

:

Katie: had,

174

:

Bill: and then you find out that,

175

:

what was it John Goodman's character?

176

:

Sorry, spoiler alert.

177

:

Yeah.

178

:

Yeah.

179

:

Yeah.

180

:

Katie: Yeah.

181

:

Yeah.

182

:

Spoiler.

183

:

Bill: Yes, but for some reason you have

not watched the show at this point.

184

:

Katie: but then he somehow

comes back or something.

185

:

Cause they have the, the new series,

186

:

the Connors now

187

:

the

188

:

Jason Masek: I was

189

:

just going to ask about that.

190

:

Yeah.

191

:

What the status of that show

was now, because weren't

192

:

there a couple of iterations?

193

:

They brought it

194

:

on?

195

:

Bill: no

196

:

Katie: She is

197

:

Jason Masek: Right.

198

:

she had to leave.

199

:

Right.

200

:

There's the

201

:

whole thing.

202

:

And okay.

203

:

Right.

204

:

But, John Goodman's still doing it.

205

:

Katie: Correct.

206

:

Yep.

207

:

Jason Masek: incredible.

208

:

Awesome.

209

:

Katie: I love John

210

:

Goodman.

211

:

yeah.

212

:

He's just like all American guy.

213

:

The last year for coach and

also married with children.

214

:

I don't think I realized that

215

:

married with children lasted

216

:

Bill: Oh yeah.

217

:

Katie: been 10, like 10 years

218

:

then.

219

:

Jason Masek: Absolutely.

220

:

Yeah.

221

:

Long, long running show.

222

:

That's one I only had a relationship

to in syndication, it seems.

223

:

I mean, it was just, I

224

:

only,

225

:

or watched reruns on different

226

:

channels, whatever was available.

227

:

had a weird relationship.

228

:

And then it was just so odd to

think it was still on, like it

229

:

was still airing new episodes.

230

:

It

231

:

was one of those weird things.

232

:

I

233

:

felt

234

:

like it

235

:

Katie: yeah,

236

:

Jason Masek: dated.

237

:

It was, It was,

238

:

still happening at

239

:

Bill: Yeah.

240

:

And you got to give prompts to

241

:

Katie: yeah, there's a few examples of

242

:

Bill: Ed O'Neill.

243

:

I mean, he, on that show and

then he does modern family

244

:

that also has an amazing run.

245

:

I mean, most actors would kill

to, to have that kind of career.

246

:

Just have two.

247

:

Outstanding long running the checks.

248

:

He must be still bringing

in from doing that.

249

:

He doesn't have to work

another day in his life.

250

:

Katie: Very good point.

251

:

And so he, yeah, he had that long

run and then it was sort of like,

252

:

whatever happened to Ed O'Neill.

253

:

And then he's back with modern family.

254

:

Now what I, I feel like I read somebody,

please correct me if I'm wrong, but

255

:

I feel like I read that Craig T.

256

:

Nelson from coach was originally

offered that role, but he turned

257

:

it down or he wanted more money

258

:

than they were willing to pay.

259

:

Bill: Oh, I didn't hear about

260

:

Katie: then they offered it to Ed

261

:

Jason Masek: Crossover there.

262

:

I was

263

:

also going to say, yeah, if

you ever get a chance to hear

264

:

any interview with Ed O'Neill on, I

listened to him on a separate podcast

265

:

and that guy has some life experience.

266

:

He's a bad

267

:

ass.

268

:

want

269

:

to

270

:

go against, yeah, Ed O'Neill?

271

:

Absolutely.

272

:

But that's interesting with T.

273

:

Nelson,

274

:

Love that show

275

:

Katie: Mm hmm.

276

:

Bill: Yeah, it's funny.

277

:

All those shows that you

mentioned, that was our last year.

278

:

I think I watched maybe the first of two

or three seasons and then just kind of,

279

:

it just all, they all petered off for.

280

:

me.

281

:

I never, I don't think I made

it to the end of any of them.

282

:

Well, yeah, yeah.

283

:

Even married with children.

284

:

I held on for a long time, but yeah,

I even stopped watching that one too.

285

:

Katie: Yeah, me too.

286

:

The only one that I watched all of it,

287

:

of those, was Roseanne.

288

:

Jason Masek: Hmm.

289

:

Katie: And I still watch that show,

290

:

but then so those it those ended this

season and then we get a whole crop of you

291

:

know, it's a different feel at this time.

292

:

Some notable premieres, we

have 3rd rock from the sun.

293

:

Which I think is a very smart show.

294

:

I've seen some,

295

:

Yeah, some reruns recently

296

:

Bill: Me too.

297

:

Katie: They were doing some cool things.

298

:

Bill: Yeah.

299

:

It was bizarre.

300

:

John Lithgow was so, so over the top.

301

:

I mean, I think he won, he won

a couple of Emmys for that role,

302

:

I believe as, as best actor.

303

:

Yeah.

304

:

And you had a, a young Joseph

Gordon Levitt and yeah.

305

:

Jason Masek: Is

306

:

it French Stewart that's also on

307

:

Bill: Yeah.

308

:

French Stewart.

309

:

Yeah.

310

:

That was his.

311

:

Katie: and Sally was Kirsten Johnson.

312

:

I, and she, did you guys ever see the show

on TV land or something called The Exes?

313

:

Bill: No.

314

:

Katie: One of the guys from Scrubs

um, Both those guys are recently in

315

:

A T Mobile commercial

316

:

Jason Masek: Yeah.

317

:

Zach Braff.

318

:

And I can't think of the Other gentleman's

319

:

name.

320

:

Katie: Yeah.

321

:

what's, it's the, it's not Zach Braff.

322

:

the other one is in the X's.

323

:

Wayne Knight is also in it.

324

:

Bill: wow.

325

:

Katie: but it's great.

326

:

I actually really like the

X's, but Kirsten is in that

327

:

as well.

328

:

And I'm a fan of hers.

329

:

I like her a

330

:

Bill: Yeah.

331

:

She was, she was, she

was fun in that one too.

332

:

That, yeah, that was, that was

lightning and about, yeah, you

333

:

had Jane Curtin in it also.

334

:

So,

335

:

Katie: yeah,

336

:

yeah.

337

:

Mm hmm.

338

:

Bill: SC,

339

:

Saturday Night Live, yeah,

what in the original.

340

:

And, yeah, there's some funny, yeah,

there's some funny stuff in that.

341

:

They had some great cameos

with some people also.

342

:

Yeah, it was a fun

343

:

Jason Masek: For such an outlandish

344

:

concept.

345

:

It was really

346

:

well written.

347

:

And obviously, I

348

:

mean, it was a big award

349

:

winner.

350

:

I mean, it's warrant like it,

if you, I apologize if you'd

351

:

mentioned that already, but it, it

352

:

won

353

:

several Emmys if I'm not mistaken.

354

:

Right.

355

:

And Lithgow,

356

:

of

357

:

Katie: Well, I'm glad to hear it.

358

:

I think they're well

359

:

deserved.

360

:

Jason Masek: absolutely.

361

:

Hmm.

362

:

Katie: Some other new shows.

363

:

7th Heaven was this

364

:

year.

365

:

Access Hollywood.

366

:

Bill: Oh,

367

:

Katie: And E!

368

:

True Hollywood Stories.

369

:

So that kind of a thing

was like, I don't know.

370

:

There was a lot of that type of

show being, you know, incarnated

371

:

Jason Masek: The Tabloid

372

:

TV show,

373

:

Bill: Yep.

374

:

Tabloid show.

375

:

Yep.

376

:

Katie: I

377

:

really liked E!

378

:

True Hollywood Story

379

:

Bill: Yeah, they do

really do have some of the

380

:

love lines.

381

:

That

382

:

Katie: Loveline with Dr.

383

:

Dr.

384

:

Drew?

385

:

yeah,

386

:

on MTV.

387

:

Bill: That's what it was.

388

:

Yep.

389

:

Katie: late 90s.

390

:

Let's see, we have The Jamie Foxx Show,

Judge Judy, The Rosie O'Donnell Show.

391

:

Which I remember she threw those

koosh balls at the audience

392

:

in, it

393

:

was a

394

:

Jason Masek: yeah.

395

:

Sure.

396

:

and

397

:

uh, I have to mention here, too, as well,

398

:

sorry to interrupt, but I

actually, myself, yours truly,

399

:

made an appearance on the Judge

400

:

Judy show.

401

:

Katie: you did

402

:

Jason Masek: I did It's insane!

403

:

I

404

:

was a plaintiff.

405

:

Katie: Okay,

406

:

please tell us about this.

407

:

Oh, my goodness.

408

:

Bill: love this

409

:

Jason Masek: but I, uh, it's so funny.

410

:

So, uh, so in 97, especially we,

I just moved out to LA in late 95.

411

:

So now it's going on two years that

I've been in Los Angeles being a

412

:

young hopefully upcoming actor.

413

:

And I had a couple of roommates,

one being my, my friend,

414

:

Brian, who was also an actor.

415

:

And then.

416

:

Our third roommate seemed to be in

rotation, at this particular particular

417

:

point we had a female roommate and which

started off as a good relationship,

418

:

and then what ended up happening was,

well, let me just set the stage, is

419

:

that my roommate Brian had a double

yellowhead African Amazon parrot.

420

:

And those birds.

421

:

Katie: Oh, God, I thought you

were going to say snake for

422

:

Jason Masek: Oh, right.

423

:

Katie: oh, my God.

424

:

I'm so

425

:

Jason Masek: That would have made for a

426

:

great story too,

427

:

Katie: parrot.

428

:

Jason Masek: but this parrot, so

it was in a cage, but sometimes

429

:

he would let the parrot out.

430

:

And these particular parrots are,

Fascinating birds and they mimic and they

431

:

do the voices and they're really funny.

432

:

You, they, he would mimic conversation

and it would be really eerie.

433

:

However, the, the parrot was

very possessive of its owner.

434

:

So if anyone else came

near the parrot was.

435

:

attack actually, and you didn't

want to be on the wrong end of that.

436

:

So at one point I'm going to

actually cut to the chase here.

437

:

Our third roommate, our female

roommate disappeared on us and she

438

:

ditched us holding the bag with the

not paying the rent and the bills.

439

:

So we went to small claims court to see

if there was anyone that could find her.

440

:

We would, you know, we had little

information on her whereabouts, try

441

:

to track her down for this money owed.

442

:

That's unbeknownst to us.

443

:

That's how judge Judy at the time,

at least got their guests on the

444

:

show was they went through the small

claims court cases in LA or wherever

445

:

major markets, I would assume.

446

:

And they contact us and they say, Hey,

do you want your 15 seconds of fave?

447

:

And we're like, yeah, we're actors.

448

:

Of course we want to go on TV, especially

judge Judy, who's such a big personality

449

:

herself and a well known show.

450

:

So, sure enough, they got ahold of our.

451

:

Roommate that we were trying to track

down and she agreed to be on the show.

452

:

the defendant and we went on and it was,

it was a whole thing and the reason why

453

:

I brought up the parrot in the 1st place

is because that episode of Judge Judy

454

:

ends up mainly being about the parrot.

455

:

The parrot becomes the star

of the show that's good

456

:

television

457

:

and our female roommate was complaining

that the parrot had attacked her and

458

:

this was one of the many reasons why

she moved out without notice, etc.

459

:

Anyway, it was a long thing but kind

of a claim to fame for myself and

460

:

my friend Brian and her our female

roommate As well as I assume but

461

:

it's I have it on still on vhs.

462

:

I need to transfer

463

:

it To a

464

:

modern,

465

:

Katie: What was the, what was the verdict?

466

:

What did judge Judy have To

467

:

Jason Masek: we didn't get the rent,

but we got the bills that were owed us.

468

:

So we did get some money out of it.

469

:

And I think our roommate, the

plaintiff, I think, or excuse me,

470

:

the defendant, she, I think she

actually got paid a hundred bucks just

471

:

for being on TV.

472

:

Which

473

:

is hilarious.

474

:

So she got something out of it,

475

:

but it, it.

476

:

It ended up making good television.

477

:

yeah, it was crazy.

478

:

Katie: what is the timeline look

like for something like that?

479

:

Like you, you file your small

claims and then how long after

480

:

that did you hear from the show?

481

:

And then how long after that were you

482

:

Jason Masek: It must've happened

probably within a couple of months.

483

:

It was not very long.

484

:

It was not very long at all.

485

:

probably was less than that, probably a

486

:

month.

487

:

But it was fun

488

:

being, you know, on

the lot and then in the

489

:

studio and, you know, being in the green

room and getting prepped by the producers.

490

:

And they were telling us, okay, so

you have to address her as your honor.

491

:

She is actually, or was a judge.

492

:

And so she's a professional

and yes, this is television.

493

:

So don't be afraid to play up some

of the facts of the case a little

494

:

bit, you know, let's, we're, we're

also about the entertainment and sure

495

:

enough, judge Judy is, is She's a

496

:

huge personality and she's a

497

:

force to be reckoned with.

498

:

And if we got anything out

of it, she really let the

499

:

defendant, our female roommate

500

:

have it in the middle of

501

:

the

502

:

show.

503

:

So like, okay, that's good enough for us.

504

:

If even if we didn't get all

the money, we felt we were

505

:

owed.

506

:

Katie: What a great story.

507

:

Jason Masek: trip.

508

:

Judge

509

:

Judy.

510

:

She's incredible.

511

:

She's, She's, a sharp, sharp, lady.

512

:

Yeah.

513

:

Katie: I feel like I've recently

heard like an audio ad that

514

:

she's got a new incarnation

515

:

of the show.

516

:

Jason Masek: There's a

517

:

huge show.

518

:

People love

519

:

Bill: What's what's all this new again?

520

:

Katie: That's, oh, isn't

that the truth, Bill?

521

:

Let's see.

522

:

The only other, oh, do you guys remember

there being a show with just Mrs.

523

:

and Mr.

524

:

Huxtable that just called Cosby?

525

:

It was

526

:

just Cliff and Claire.

527

:

Bill: Yes.

528

:

I

529

:

do remember that show, but yeah, I

didn't, I didn't watch that one at all.

530

:

Yeah.

531

:

Yeah, I think the big show that came

out for me that year was Millennium

532

:

Which was created by Chris Carter

who did X Files and it starred Lance

533

:

Henriksen as a special Investigator

for some crazy crazy dark case is a

534

:

very very dark show and it was kind

of funny I was not a fan of X Files.

535

:

It was on Fox

536

:

It was on Friday nights, and that

was a reason for me to stay home.

537

:

Friday was to watch this show.

538

:

And it only lasted to three seasons

because it was supposed to be about

539

:

the whole apocalypse and the ending

of everything because, you know, the

540

:

millennium was going to hit the show.

541

:

Didn't even last enough long

enough to make it on there.

542

:

And, uh, Terry O'Quinn,

who would go on to be lost.

543

:

He was also on it.

544

:

And I, I never watched the final.

545

:

I, yeah, I have all three seasons, but I

still haven't watched the final one yet.

546

:

But the first two seasons were,

were dark, really dark and cool.

547

:

Yeah.

548

:

He was, he was kind of like an

ex FBI profiler who gets called

549

:

into this group, the millennium

550

:

Katie: Oh, I like that

551

:

Bill: Yeah.

552

:

You should check it out.

553

:

The, the dark, dark cases.

554

:

Yes.

555

:

Yeah,

556

:

Katie: Millennium.

557

:

I will check that out.

558

:

I'm always looking for

a new show to binge.

559

:

Kind of prescient.

560

:

The Daily Show premieres this year.

561

:

And the reason I bring that up as being

prescient is because Jon Stewart's

562

:

Jason Masek: Right.

563

:

Katie: But he didn't, I think Craig

Kilborn was the first host for one year.

564

:

And then it was Jon

565

:

Stewart.

566

:

Right?

567

:

Jason Masek: That

568

:

Bill: that's right.

569

:

You

570

:

Jason Masek: And I remember being a Craig

Kilborne fan because of SportsCenter.

571

:

And he had the look, and he had the

personality, and the one liners.

572

:

Then he left to do his own thing, and I I

573

:

though.

574

:

Because then he had his own show.

575

:

I mean, he had

576

:

his own

577

:

Bill: late night.

578

:

show, right?

579

:

Yeah.

580

:

Jason Masek: Kilborn.

581

:

Katie: That's

582

:

right.

583

:

Yeah.

584

:

I, I think that's Right.

585

:

I could be wrong.

586

:

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

587

:

Spin City was also

588

:

premiering this,

589

:

Bill: Yeah.

590

:

Michael J.

591

:

Fox.

592

:

Katie: 97.

593

:

And the

594

:

Crocodile Hunter with Steve Irwin,

595

:

who is passed away.

596

:

I remember Really, I do

remember watching that.

597

:

Bill: Yeah.

598

:

that.

599

:

was one of the, Oh, my God.

600

:

He was all over the place, but

I think if you asked anyone,

601

:

if they ever watched the show,

602

:

if someone said they saw more than

one episode, I would be impressed,

603

:

but everybody knew who he was.

604

:

Everybody knew the show, but I didn't

know anybody that watched the show.

605

:

He was such a personality.

606

:

Oh, man, he was, he was.

607

:

great.

608

:

And then just the way

he tragically passed.

609

:

That was just terrible.

610

:

Katie: It

611

:

Jason Masek: Yeah, that was very

612

:

sad, but the show was huge.

613

:

And yeah, what a great personality

and the voice and the whole thing.

614

:

And speaking of 1997,

615

:

which also even made

616

:

Steve Irwin more famous because of their

617

:

parody.

618

:

Of him

619

:

and

620

:

Katie: I totally forgot about that.

621

:

Jason Masek: Park does I, from the

little research I've done here uh, Park,

622

:

started

623

:

in

624

:

Bill: started at 97.

625

:

Yeah.

626

:

I remember

627

:

through the channels and stopping

on the show and it was the premier

628

:

episode and I was like, what?

629

:

Is this and I was, I mean, I was laughing

hysterically and then I went back to work

630

:

and just told everybody about the show.

631

:

I'm like, Oh my God, you

gotta watch the show.

632

:

It's the craziest thing I've ever seen.

633

:

And I'm like, it's a cartoon.

634

:

It's animated.

635

:

I can't believe the things are

coming out of these kids mouth

636

:

and it, it, it just took off

637

:

Katie: Yeah.

638

:

You know, speaking of the

South Park, so those guys, have

639

:

you guys heard of Casa Bonita

640

:

Jason Masek: Oh, gosh,

641

:

Katie: in Denver?

642

:

Jason Masek: that's

643

:

so

644

:

interesting.

645

:

You

646

:

bring that up.

647

:

It's so wild.

648

:

I just recently heard

about this whole thing.

649

:

Not knowing of it, but I believe

I heard it on again, because

650

:

I listened to podcasts all

651

:

day that

652

:

are, did they, well,

please tell us the story,

653

:

but did, aren't they

654

:

owners or part owners now of

655

:

that?

656

:

Katie: Yeah,

657

:

so it was, I don't know

if it actually closed.

658

:

I had never been to it before.

659

:

So, listeners, Casa

Bonita is this landmark.

660

:

restaurant, a scenic attraction, like

they had cliff divers and they were

661

:

notorious for the food being really

horrible, but that's not why you go.

662

:

You don't, it's hard to explain.

663

:

Nobody really knows what it is and

you have to go to experience it.

664

:

And then it got really run down.

665

:

Everybody's Oh, it's horrible.

666

:

It's horrible.

667

:

Well, the, the Trey

668

:

Parker and

669

:

Jason Masek: Matt

670

:

Stone.

671

:

Bill: Matt

672

:

Stone.

673

:

Katie: the Creators of South Park

bought it 'cause they're from Colorado.

674

:

There's actually a place here

called South Park and it's obviously

675

:

set in South Park Colorado.

676

:

They bought it and redid

it and it's really awesome.

677

:

I was able to go and it,

I, I can't explain it.

678

:

You just have to experience it.

679

:

And the food is pretty decent.

680

:

Now,

681

:

Jason Masek: I gotta

check this out because I'm

682

:

going to Boulder often and I was when

last time I was there over Christmas I was

683

:

going downtown and I had totally Skipped

my mind, but I did a little research

684

:

on that when I had heard about it and

it looks like a Extravaganza, it looks

685

:

pretty awesome.

686

:

Katie: it's still really

hard to get in You there

687

:

was like a lottery system for a while,

688

:

but, um, but Yeah

689

:

Casa Bonita,

690

:

if anybody comes to Denver.

691

:

Shall we move on to the top billboards?

692

:

In terms of music

693

:

from May of 1997.

694

:

Bill: Yeah,

695

:

let's go for it.

696

:

Katie: The very week.

697

:

So just as a reminder, this

is the billboards that we

698

:

talk about are week over week.

699

:

So this is the week of May 2nd.

700

:

They're really, I love the 90s.

701

:

I feel more than the 80s.

702

:

Cause I like at this time, I'm

like, let's see, I'm at the end of

703

:

my sophomore year of high school.

704

:

So this is like prime

705

:

Bill: No, There you go.

706

:

Yeah.

707

:

this is right in your wheelhouse.

708

:

Katie: Biggie.

709

:

Yeah.

710

:

So that's the number one song.

711

:

Really, really good.

712

:

And I do remember that being big and then

same alley puff daddy featuring mace has

713

:

the number two song with can't nobody

714

:

hold me down.

715

:

Bill: Wow.

716

:

Katie: then very different from that is

the number three song with jewel foolish

717

:

games slash you were meant for me.

718

:

What a monster song that

719

:

Bill: Oh,

720

:

Jason Masek: yeah

721

:

Bill: Yeah, Jewel

722

:

Jason Masek: I haven't thought about Juul

in so long and And all of a sudden, I

723

:

don't know if it was on Instagram or some

sort of reel, she popped up and I'm like,

724

:

of course, Jewel was so huge in the day.

725

:

And I always, I mean, I always

found her very attractive, even when

726

:

she had the

727

:

teeth

728

:

going on that kind of smile, but

729

:

I just thought she was always

beautiful and had the voice.

730

:

And now I'm in, I'm driving a

rental car and it has XM Sirius

731

:

radio and I've been listening to

the Pop Rocks, which is all 90s.

732

:

And I can't get,

733

:

I,

734

:

Jewel is playing

735

:

constantly,

736

:

all of a sudden,

737

:

like this All happened in the last

738

:

week.

739

:

I haven't thought

740

:

about or

741

:

Bill: Oh, yeah, her story was

such a big thing You know the

742

:

songwriter who was sleeping in her

743

:

Katie: Yeah, was she homeless?

744

:

Yeah,

745

:

Bill: then just turn it around

and had the number one album and

746

:

I I think everyone owned that

album at some point It was huge.

747

:

It was huge.

748

:

And then yeah, it's like where did she go?

749

:

Just like for me, musically, because

coming in the early nineties is when,

750

:

you know, we were in college together.

751

:

That was like the grunge era.

752

:

So we were really into the grunge thing.

753

:

And then it was such a big shift at

that point with the music thing that I

754

:

don't think I crossed over as as much.

755

:

I was still more like hanging on to the

latest albums for, you know, collective

756

:

soul or live or something like that.

757

:

So I think I was in my

mid yeah, mid twenties.

758

:

Yeah.

759

:

So yeah, I was still the transition

thing with the, with the puff daddy.

760

:

And like my, my roommate

would have loved that stuff.

761

:

My old roommate would have loved that

stuff, but yeah, I was still kind of.

762

:

I'm trying to hang on to the old

white rock groups at the time.

763

:

Katie: I can see that, but you're right

about there being a big shift from

764

:

early nineties to mid and late nineties.

765

:

Hip hop was huge then as a

lot of things were, but I was

766

:

really into

767

:

Bill: Yeah.

768

:

So you're, you're the, you were

the perfect age for all that.

769

:

Yeah.

770

:

You were the perfect

age for all that stuff.

771

:

Cause that's really when your

biggest music influences happen.

772

:

When you're in high

school, going into college.

773

:

That's yeah.

774

:

You listen to all that,

that billboard stuff.

775

:

and the only reason I listened to.

776

:

Modern pop now it's just

because of my, my kids.

777

:

Cause every time I'm in the

car, they, you know, they want

778

:

to listen to what's current.

779

:

So that's the only reason why I

know anyone, any artists that's

780

:

out right now is because of them.

781

:

Like they, they have to

teach me all this stuff.

782

:

Katie: Yeah.

783

:

I, I think I'm going to grow old

quickly because I don't have children

784

:

to keep me with the young references.

785

:

I don't know but yeah, I mean, I, I

liked, it's all over the, the map with

786

:

Puffy, Biggie, Jewel, Monica has the

number 4 song with For You I Will,

787

:

which apparently was from Space Jam.

788

:

I actually never saw

789

:

that.

790

:

And then the next 2

again, all over the place.

791

:

Savage Garden.

792

:

Has a number 5 song with I want you

and you guys know that song, right?

793

:

Jason Masek: know

794

:

it if I heard it.

795

:

I'm sure I've been listening to it.

796

:

And yeah.

797

:

Katie: Very Savage Garden.

798

:

And then

799

:

Spice girls.

800

:

Jason Masek: Oh yeah.

801

:

Katie: I think this is maybe when they.

802

:

Want to be, and that

might have been their 1st

803

:

hit.

804

:

It was the number 6

805

:

Bill: Yep.

806

:

Spice girls.

807

:

Oh, yeah.

808

:

Katie: They

809

:

were,

810

:

big for several

811

:

Bill: Oh yeah.

812

:

Big time.

813

:

Oh yeah.

814

:

Katie: And then do you guys remember

being at a club or something

815

:

and hearing return of the Mac.

816

:

Jason Masek: sure.

817

:

Katie: Mark Morrison,

818

:

I don't read.

819

:

I always thought that was like,

early 90s, but apparently it was 97

820

:

because it was the number 7 song.

821

:

Bill: Yeah.

822

:

It's kind of funny when you hear

some of those old songs, you think

823

:

it's been around forever and you're

like, Oh no, it was only from.

824

:

Then, you know, it was not out that

long ago and yeah, that, that song

825

:

kind of has that feel that it's been

around longer than it actually was.

826

:

I mean, granted 97 is a

long time ago, but yeah,

827

:

Katie: No, no, it was only like 10

828

:

Bill: exactly.

829

:

It's last week.

830

:

Katie: The name of the group of the

number eight song I feel like I've never

831

:

heard the group but We know the song.

832

:

The song is called hard to say.

833

:

I'm sorry.

834

:

It's by as yet AZ space why

ET featuring Peter Cetera?

835

:

Jason Masek: So,

836

:

yeah.

837

:

Katie: hold me now.

838

:

It's hard for me to say.

839

:

I'm sorry

840

:

Jason Masek: It's

841

:

the

842

:

Bill: So Peter Cetera.

843

:

Yeah.

844

:

So

845

:

Peter Cetera was the lead

846

:

Jason Masek: Cetera.

847

:

Katie: right

848

:

Jason Masek: Right.

849

:

So,

850

:

they must, is it a,

851

:

Katie: hop version

852

:

Jason Masek: of that song then

with both of them on the track, I

853

:

assume.

854

:

I'm trying to think if

855

:

I've

856

:

Katie: Yes, that's right.

857

:

Good.

858

:

I was like, why does that.

859

:

sound so familiar?

860

:

But it's it's a great rendition

861

:

I didn't even track initially

862

:

that It was a remake or a

863

:

whatever you

864

:

Jason Masek: Oh, I'd love that song.

865

:

I have Chicago's best, greatest hits.

866

:

That's a great, great song.

867

:

CD, by the way, and whether it's with

Peter Cetera in the band or not, cause

868

:

he ended, he didn't, I think he left

after some time, but love that band,

869

:

but I can hear the song in my head.

870

:

Katie: And then Paula Cole,

Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?

871

:

Was

872

:

Jason Masek: Oh, yeah.

873

:

Of

874

:

Katie: believe this was a

875

:

one hit wonder, but it was huge.

876

:

Bill: Yeah, you still hear that one a lot.

877

:

Yeah, it's kind of funny that whole list.

878

:

I would that's the one I'm like Oh,

I still hear that song all the time.

879

:

Katie: From a genre perspective is

880

:

all over the

881

:

place.

882

:

So like the nineties were, I guess

every decade is a little wild, but the

883

:

number 10 song made me laugh because at

first I didn't recognize it, but then

884

:

I looked it up, it's called my baby

daddy and it's by B rock and the biz.

885

:

Do you know what song I'm talking about?

886

:

Jason Masek: No

887

:

Bill: I would have to I

would have to hear that

888

:

Jason Masek: I just want

you to say that again.

889

:

I just want you to read

that again, because that

890

:

was really funny.

891

:

you

892

:

Katie: sing it.

893

:

I cannot sing and listeners

are used to my attempts.

894

:

It's called My Baby Daddy

by B Rock and the Biz.

895

:

And it goes, Who dat is?

896

:

That's just my baby daddy.

897

:

Who dat is?

898

:

That's just my baby daddy.

899

:

The whole,

900

:

like that's the whole song.

901

:

Jason Masek: good

902

:

Katie: Does that sound familiar?

903

:

Do you guys remember

904

:

Jason Masek: no idea.

905

:

Nope.

906

:

Bill: no

907

:

Katie: It's like a guy sang

who that is and a girl sang.

908

:

That's just my baby daddy

909

:

Bill: Wow

910

:

Katie: number 10 song in may, may of 1997.

911

:

You

912

:

Bill: I gotta find a 90

station after this just to

913

:

find some of these songs.

914

:

This is Yeah, most of this was just

not in my wheelhouse at the time, yeah.

915

:

Right,

916

:

Katie: Some news and events to make us

back in 97 before we get into the movie.

917

:

This was when Tony Blair was elected

Prime Minister of the UK in May,

918

:

97.

919

:

Bill: yeah, taking over for

Margaret Thatcher, right?

920

:

Katie: I think

921

:

so, I found this to be wildest too.

922

:

I'm always surprised about how long

it takes us to progress in society.

923

:

Tasmania becomes the last state in

Australia to , decriminalize any guesses

924

:

what they decriminalize in May of 97.

925

:

Bill: even want to know if I

926

:

Jason Masek: Yeah.

927

:

I don't, I can't even, I

don't want to hazard a guess.

928

:

Yeah.

929

:

I don't

930

:

Bill: Yeah, exactly.

931

:

Jason Masek: Ah,

932

:

Bill: Wow.

933

:

Katie: in 97, 97.

934

:

Yeah.

935

:

And then I had forgotten about this,

but do you remember when the, when Eddie

936

:

Murphy was all over the news, because

he got arrested with a transsexual

937

:

prostitute named at,

938

:

Bill: Oh my god, I, forgot about that

939

:

Katie: Lee.

940

:

Bill: Yes.

941

:

Yeah.

942

:

Katie: that, that was a thing.

943

:

Jason Masek: I, you

944

:

know,

945

:

whenever it's

946

:

Katie: then,

947

:

Jason Masek: to the Hugh Grant incident

948

:

Bill: Exactly.

949

:

Me too.

950

:

But yeah.

951

:

Jason Masek: made

952

:

his apology or Leno.

953

:

It

954

:

was one of the

955

:

Bill: It was Jay Leno.

956

:

Yeah, because that's when,

957

:

I was doing the late night wars

and Letterman was killing Leno.

958

:

And then when Hugh Grant went

on the Leno, that's when, that's

959

:

when their ratings reversed.

960

:

That was

961

:

Jason Masek: Yeah.

962

:

And I don't know what

963

:

Katie: seems all around the same

time too, like late 90s was this

964

:

Jason Masek: it feels

965

:

like it.

966

:

Yeah.

967

:

I

968

:

I don't remember exactly when the

969

:

Hugh Grant.

970

:

happened, but he saved a lot

of face just by apologizing.

971

:

Then I remember also,

972

:

Katie: two.

973

:

Bill: it would seem like that kind of

be a thing where all of a sudden all

974

:

these famous people were being caught

975

:

Yeah George

976

:

Jason Masek: And we didn't even

have, I mean, like the cell phones

977

:

back then and the whole thing.

978

:

So it was different.

979

:

I mean, again, just a

lot of that tabloid stuff

980

:

come out and that those

things would blow up.

981

:

Cause that's all we

982

:

had.

983

:

Bill: Yeah,

984

:

Katie: Yeah, and along similar lines

actor Tim Allen was arrested for

985

:

drunk, drunk driving in Michigan.

986

:

And the reason this was such

a huge deal is because he had.

987

:

one of the biggest shows on

television at the time as a wholesome

988

:

dad,

989

:

Bill: right And he had a he

had a checkered past too.

990

:

So

991

:

Katie: Yeah.

992

:

He, Yeah.

993

:

for

994

:

sure.

995

:

Bill: but yeah.

996

:

I think for me because I was really

big in the stand up comedy In

997

:

the late eighties and nineties.

998

:

So when, when those comedians went on

to do shows like, you know, Seinfeld,

999

:

Tim Allen, um, Drew Carey, though,

those are the shows I was gravitated

:

00:35:44,723 --> 00:35:47,463

for because I was just a big fan of

their standup and just to see how

:

00:35:47,463 --> 00:35:50,483

it would transition into television.

:

00:35:50,863 --> 00:35:55,573

And it was a while until I knew

about Tim Allen's backstory.

:

00:35:56,078 --> 00:35:56,378

Yeah.

:

00:35:56,428 --> 00:35:57,548

So then, yeah, something like that.

:

00:35:57,598 --> 00:36:00,728

It's just, it just, you know, it's going

to be really big because he's got to

:

00:36:00,738 --> 00:36:05,178

really be on his P's and Q's at that point

because here he is, he's, he's resurrected

:

00:36:05,288 --> 00:36:09,058

with his life and his career and then

something like that as a step back.

:

00:36:09,058 --> 00:36:12,398

But obviously he was able to

overcome because, you know, he's,

:

00:36:12,448 --> 00:36:13,598

he's still doing stuff today.

:

00:36:14,913 --> 00:36:16,393

Katie: I do recall this being in the news.

:

00:36:16,423 --> 00:36:22,073

Australian Susie Maroney becomes the

first to swim from Cuba to Florida.

:

00:36:22,543 --> 00:36:23,723

I remember that being the news.

:

00:36:23,798 --> 00:36:24,148

Jason Masek: Hmm.

:

00:36:25,263 --> 00:36:27,203

Katie: Yeah, that was

like a, a whole thing.

:

00:36:27,273 --> 00:36:27,513

Free

:

00:36:27,513 --> 00:36:28,703

swimming from Cuba to Florida.

:

00:36:28,703 --> 00:36:29,823

That's a, that's a ways.

:

00:36:30,013 --> 00:36:30,203

Bill: they,

:

00:36:30,623 --> 00:36:34,173

didn't they just do a

movie about that recently?

:

00:36:34,723 --> 00:36:35,873

Katie: I, I don't,

:

00:36:36,043 --> 00:36:36,743

Bill: Or a show?

:

00:36:36,883 --> 00:36:37,333

Katie: else.

:

00:36:37,383 --> 00:36:41,233

Bill: A show or a movie, it might

be on one of the streaming channels.

:

00:36:41,293 --> 00:36:43,613

Katie: is, it's like Annette Bening plays

:

00:36:43,613 --> 00:36:45,653

her, but I think it's a different person.

:

00:36:45,773 --> 00:36:46,463

Bill: Oh, okay.

:

00:36:47,023 --> 00:36:48,973

Katie: And maybe that was

like the English channel.

:

00:36:49,188 --> 00:36:49,478

Jason Masek: that's,

:

00:36:49,928 --> 00:36:51,248

yeah, that's, that's with

:

00:36:51,433 --> 00:36:52,303

Bill: I got my swimwear.

:

00:36:53,148 --> 00:36:56,998

Jason Masek: and Jodie Foster,

who's nomin I mean, there's, yeah,

:

00:36:57,108 --> 00:36:59,048

Academy Award nominations for that.

:

00:36:59,088 --> 00:36:59,768

Annette Bening's

:

00:36:59,798 --> 00:37:01,068

nominated for Actress,

:

00:37:01,633 --> 00:37:02,133

Katie: Mm hmm.

:

00:37:02,623 --> 00:37:02,713

I

:

00:37:02,713 --> 00:37:03,633

haven't seen that yet.

:

00:37:03,743 --> 00:37:04,403

I'll have to watch it.

:

00:37:04,618 --> 00:37:04,858

Jason Masek: But

:

00:37:04,858 --> 00:37:07,028

right, I, so clearly, but different,

:

00:37:07,108 --> 00:37:07,868

different person.

:

00:37:07,938 --> 00:37:08,248

I don't, I'm

:

00:37:08,248 --> 00:37:08,538

trying to

:

00:37:08,538 --> 00:37:08,948

recall

:

00:37:08,948 --> 00:37:10,208

that, Yeah, Cause that's,

:

00:37:10,303 --> 00:37:12,253

Katie: I feel like, was

that the English channel?

:

00:37:12,273 --> 00:37:13,323

This was from Cuba to

:

00:37:13,323 --> 00:37:14,053

Florida.

:

00:37:14,268 --> 00:37:14,868

Jason Masek: is, God,

:

00:37:15,763 --> 00:37:16,493

Bill: 90 miles, I

:

00:37:16,708 --> 00:37:17,078

Jason Masek: Bill?

:

00:37:17,138 --> 00:37:18,318

Yeah, because we know from

:

00:37:18,793 --> 00:37:20,613

Bill: Yeah, we've been at

the southernmost point.

:

00:37:21,533 --> 00:37:23,353

Katie: Oh, that's right!

:

00:37:23,353 --> 00:37:25,075

Aw.

:

00:37:25,453 --> 00:37:27,583

Bill: there that says

southern, yeah, most tip.

:

00:37:28,103 --> 00:37:32,483

I think someone defaced

a couple years ago.

:

00:37:32,603 --> 00:37:33,943

And they had to, yeah, restore it.

:

00:37:34,143 --> 00:37:35,563

Yeah, of course, morons.

:

00:37:36,928 --> 00:37:38,878

Katie: People screwing up

:

00:37:39,003 --> 00:37:40,813

Bill: Yep, always, always

gotta ruin the good

:

00:37:40,988 --> 00:37:46,918

Katie: Um, yeah, another awesome lady,

American aviator, Linda Finch completes

:

00:37:46,928 --> 00:37:52,898

Amelia Earhart's ill fated attempt

around the world flight, May of 97.

:

00:37:53,748 --> 00:38:01,318

And also Russian president Boris Yeltsin

signs a historic treaty with NATO.

:

00:38:02,193 --> 00:38:02,623

I wonder what

:

00:38:02,633 --> 00:38:03,513

that's like.

:

00:38:03,563 --> 00:38:04,903

Seems very different from

:

00:38:04,903 --> 00:38:05,883

things nowadays,

:

00:38:06,013 --> 00:38:07,003

Bill: yeah, exactly.

:

00:38:07,103 --> 00:38:10,433

I mean, you know, we grew up in the,

during the cold war and we were always

:

00:38:10,433 --> 00:38:12,533

worried about you know, nuclear strike.

:

00:38:12,533 --> 00:38:18,023

And then it seemed like we finally patched

things up and Russia became our allies.

:

00:38:18,023 --> 00:38:20,323

And now it's reverted right

to back the way it was.

:

00:38:20,363 --> 00:38:23,803

History repeats itself,

you know, here we Go again.

:

00:38:24,333 --> 00:38:25,543

Now we've got to worry about them again.

:

00:38:26,293 --> 00:38:26,943

Jason Masek: Speaking of which,

:

00:38:27,223 --> 00:38:28,483

things, yeah, coming around,

:

00:38:29,553 --> 00:38:32,233

Amelia Earhart was back

in the news recently.

:

00:38:32,233 --> 00:38:33,423

I don't know if you saw this blurb

:

00:38:33,423 --> 00:38:34,783

at all, but they, they, there's

:

00:38:34,783 --> 00:38:35,093

someone

:

00:38:35,103 --> 00:38:36,913

flying over taking pictures or

:

00:38:36,973 --> 00:38:39,623

X, I don't know what, just

some deep sea photography.

:

00:38:40,653 --> 00:38:42,343

using radar or some sort

:

00:38:46,388 --> 00:38:46,618

Bill: Yeah.

:

00:38:46,618 --> 00:38:49,438

And the last year it was one

was they found the plane.

:

00:38:49,448 --> 00:38:53,698

Then another one was they thought they

finally found her remains on an island.

:

00:38:54,378 --> 00:38:55,448

She's been popping up a

:

00:38:55,538 --> 00:38:57,228

lot recently in the news.

:

00:38:57,228 --> 00:38:57,578

Yeah.

:

00:38:58,998 --> 00:38:59,658

Katie: Interesting.

:

00:38:59,668 --> 00:39:00,478

How would they

:

00:39:01,858 --> 00:39:05,148

I guess there's obviously way

but like it would have been

:

00:39:05,148 --> 00:39:06,808

a tiny plane in this big vast

:

00:39:06,808 --> 00:39:08,288

ocean and then her remain Yeah.

:

00:39:08,288 --> 00:39:09,218

I don't know how they know these

:

00:39:09,398 --> 00:39:09,788

Bill: Yeah.

:

00:39:09,788 --> 00:39:12,278

So they, yeah.

:

00:39:12,278 --> 00:39:15,458

Cause they were, thinking that

she maybe survived the crash

:

00:39:15,518 --> 00:39:16,578

and then was living on this

:

00:39:16,833 --> 00:39:18,103

Katie: Oh,

:

00:39:18,328 --> 00:39:20,598

Bill: And then she just, you know,

cause it was in the middle of nowhere

:

00:39:20,598 --> 00:39:22,048

and then she just eventually died.

:

00:39:22,078 --> 00:39:25,468

That was, that was maybe like a year

ago, but yeah, the plane thing happened

:

00:39:25,508 --> 00:39:28,798

recently where they thought they found

it because I mean, forever, they've just

:

00:39:28,818 --> 00:39:33,778

been trying to project where she was

flying and technology has gotten better

:

00:39:33,778 --> 00:39:36,728

and better, but yeah, I did see that, that

they thought maybe they found the plane.

:

00:39:38,243 --> 00:39:38,423

Jason Masek: Yeah.

:

00:39:38,423 --> 00:39:41,493

And it's crazy because you see

the photog, the photography or the

:

00:39:41,493 --> 00:39:44,893

photograph of the image, and it does

look like the shape of the model

:

00:39:44,893 --> 00:39:47,633

plane that she was flying, but who

:

00:39:47,633 --> 00:39:48,003

knows?

:

00:39:48,063 --> 00:39:48,933

And I don't, I

:

00:39:48,953 --> 00:39:49,183

think it

:

00:39:49,193 --> 00:39:51,243

was by some sort of accident that

:

00:39:51,243 --> 00:39:53,948

they were scouring that

Portion of the ocean

:

00:39:53,948 --> 00:39:55,608

floor, but anyway, getting off on a

:

00:39:55,608 --> 00:39:56,058

tangent.

:

00:39:56,118 --> 00:39:56,738

I just thought that

:

00:39:56,738 --> 00:39:56,928

was

:

00:39:56,968 --> 00:39:57,568

fascinating.

:

00:39:58,393 --> 00:39:59,993

Katie: I like a tangent myself.

:

00:40:00,643 --> 00:40:04,053

So may is a very popular

month for weddings.

:

00:40:04,713 --> 00:40:10,098

Lots of people got married, including

dwayne, the rock Johnson, he got

:

00:40:10,098 --> 00:40:16,708

married in May to future bodybuilder and

film producer, Danny Garcia, but they

:

00:40:16,708 --> 00:40:17,388

did divorce in

:

00:40:17,388 --> 00:40:18,058

:

:

00:40:19,133 --> 00:40:19,493

Bill: I

:

00:40:19,658 --> 00:40:25,838

Katie: then tail Leone, who we talked

about married David, David Duchovny, and

:

00:40:25,838 --> 00:40:27,408

they divorced in:

:

00:40:28,213 --> 00:40:29,703

Bill: do, I do have a good rock story.

:

00:40:29,703 --> 00:40:34,793

I'd love to share this because

Dwayne Johnson went to school with

:

00:40:34,793 --> 00:40:36,483

us at the university of Miami.

:

00:40:37,838 --> 00:40:38,118

Katie: no,

:

00:40:38,198 --> 00:40:40,788

uh, like in your like class, like

:

00:40:41,133 --> 00:40:43,403

Bill: I think it was a year behind us.

:

00:40:43,993 --> 00:40:48,883

So when I worked, when I went to I

worked in the student activities office

:

00:40:49,883 --> 00:40:53,753

and for some reason he actually would

work doing the setup for the building.

:

00:40:53,933 --> 00:40:57,063

And so if, if I had a program

going on, he would come up and

:

00:40:57,063 --> 00:40:57,773

say, Hey, what do you need?

:

00:40:57,773 --> 00:40:59,643

And I'm like, you know, we need

this amount of chairs set up.

:

00:40:59,733 --> 00:41:02,543

For whatever, so he would do the

setups for all the stuff we had,

:

00:41:02,843 --> 00:41:04,563

which I never understood how that was.

:

00:41:04,563 --> 00:41:10,493

Cause I thought athletes weren't

allowed to have jobs, but I remember

:

00:41:10,493 --> 00:41:13,833

having this conversation with him

because I said to him, because he

:

00:41:13,833 --> 00:41:17,043

was, he was on the football team at

the time and he was a defensive end.

:

00:41:17,563 --> 00:41:19,173

And I said, you know,

:

00:41:19,433 --> 00:41:20,083

what are you going to do?

:

00:41:20,103 --> 00:41:20,223

If.

:

00:41:21,453 --> 00:41:22,053

Does it work out?

:

00:41:22,053 --> 00:41:22,973

What are your plans?

:

00:41:23,643 --> 00:41:25,813

And he goes, Oh, I'm probably

going to get into wrestling.

:

00:41:26,913 --> 00:41:29,403

And in the back of my

mind, I'm like wrestling.

:

00:41:29,513 --> 00:41:32,503

What that's how, how the

hell that's going to happen.

:

00:41:32,903 --> 00:41:34,163

So I said, Oh, really?

:

00:41:34,163 --> 00:41:36,853

Do you have like connections

or anything that you couldn't?

:

00:41:36,913 --> 00:41:39,273

And that's when he gave me

is like, Oh yeah, my dad used

:

00:41:39,273 --> 00:41:40,963

to, to wrestle as Rocky Maivia

:

00:41:41,353 --> 00:41:44,103

and his, his, Uncles

were the wild Samoans.

:

00:41:44,563 --> 00:41:47,493

And he's telling me, I'm like, and I

just remember well, good luck with that.

:

00:41:47,493 --> 00:41:48,953

I hope, you know, I hope it works out.

:

00:41:49,413 --> 00:41:52,723

And then two or three years later,

I'm flipping through the channels.

:

00:41:52,753 --> 00:41:54,973

And what'd he, what'd he started?

:

00:41:54,983 --> 00:41:56,703

He wasn't, he didn't start off as a rock.

:

00:41:59,013 --> 00:42:02,093

He, I can't remember what

his first character was.

:

00:42:02,153 --> 00:42:05,563

And There he was on a Monday

night wrestling and then

:

00:42:05,573 --> 00:42:06,623

became one of the biggest.

:

00:42:06,758 --> 00:42:07,518

Katie: Oh my.

:

00:42:08,658 --> 00:42:12,488

Bill: we, yeah, we have crossed

paths every once in a while, but

:

00:42:12,488 --> 00:42:13,688

yeah, it's, it's been a long time.

:

00:42:16,038 --> 00:42:16,888

Katie: would you,

:

00:42:16,918 --> 00:42:18,528

how would you describe him?

:

00:42:18,918 --> 00:42:21,818

Bill: Oh, he was, he was

the nicest, quietest guy.

:

00:42:21,838 --> 00:42:27,498

So to see his personality, it was like,

that's not the person I would talk to.

:

00:42:27,978 --> 00:42:29,678

He, that was not him.

:

00:42:29,878 --> 00:42:31,488

He was, but yeah, he was just,

:

00:42:31,808 --> 00:42:33,588

yeah, nice, sweet man.

:

00:42:35,238 --> 00:42:36,918

I would say, I would say kid back then.

:

00:42:37,368 --> 00:42:38,968

Cause I mean, here we are, we were in our

:

00:42:39,438 --> 00:42:41,668

early, early twenties, late teens.

:

00:42:42,768 --> 00:42:44,538

But yeah, even back then

he was, he was a big guy.

:

00:42:45,563 --> 00:42:45,833

Jason Masek: you?

:

00:42:46,758 --> 00:42:48,868

Bill: Yes, that was,

:

00:42:49,668 --> 00:42:54,438

that was in my days with the Miami

Dolphins and he came to visit a game

:

00:42:54,708 --> 00:42:58,823

and yeah, I got a sideline photo

with him As my, as my alter ego.

:

00:42:58,853 --> 00:42:59,173

Yeah.

:

00:42:59,223 --> 00:43:00,203

As my alter ego,

:

00:43:00,893 --> 00:43:02,683

cause I used to be the,

I used to be the mascot.

:

00:43:02,743 --> 00:43:04,433

I used to be the mascot

for the Miami dolphins.

:

00:43:04,433 --> 00:43:05,513

I did that for 10 years.

:

00:43:06,343 --> 00:43:08,433

Katie: I don't think I

knew you were the mascot.

:

00:43:08,633 --> 00:43:08,853

Bill: yeah.

:

00:43:08,853 --> 00:43:11,873

I don't usually tell people I,

for the longest time, I never

:

00:43:11,873 --> 00:43:13,253

told anybody that I did it.

:

00:43:13,613 --> 00:43:15,803

Just because I think moving

out to California and trying

:

00:43:15,803 --> 00:43:18,203

to start a new career, people

just wouldn't take you serious.

:

00:43:18,203 --> 00:43:20,813

Oh, you just, you know, you ran around

with costume and I'm like, no, that's,

:

00:43:20,883 --> 00:43:22,493

there was a lot more to it than that.

:

00:43:22,893 --> 00:43:24,613

But yeah, that's what, that's what I did.

:

00:43:24,663 --> 00:43:28,073

And yeah, so he, he, he would,

he would show up at the training

:

00:43:28,073 --> 00:43:29,383

facility every once in a while.

:

00:43:29,848 --> 00:43:33,208

And that's where I would see him There

but every, like every time you'd never

:

00:43:33,218 --> 00:43:35,538

remember who I was that we went to

school together or anything like that,

:

00:43:35,888 --> 00:43:39,278

but yeah, so I do have a picture of

him on the, on the sidelines, like at

:

00:43:39,278 --> 00:43:41,788

the height of his WWE wrestling days.

:

00:43:42,018 --> 00:43:42,508

Katie: Mm hmm.

:

00:43:43,818 --> 00:43:45,278

That's really cool.

:

00:43:45,308 --> 00:43:48,438

And also, I'm very

intrigued by the mascot.

:

00:43:48,648 --> 00:43:52,248

Do you have to have so much energy to do

:

00:43:52,248 --> 00:43:52,868

that?

:

00:43:53,858 --> 00:43:54,508

You know,

:

00:43:54,553 --> 00:43:54,673

Bill: is.

:

00:43:54,673 --> 00:43:58,103

what, so being in South,

yeah, being in South Florida,

:

00:43:58,643 --> 00:44:01,683

I would say I was usually losing

about three pounds an hour.

:

00:44:01,723 --> 00:44:07,733

So the, the, not the stamina and

just, just mental toughness you

:

00:44:07,743 --> 00:44:09,373

needs to have to get through that.

:

00:44:09,878 --> 00:44:10,848

It was a lot

:

00:44:11,148 --> 00:44:13,598

like I, I, would like people,

it's you know, what, what did you

:

00:44:13,598 --> 00:44:14,898

like or dislike about your job?

:

00:44:14,938 --> 00:44:18,558

I would say game days were the

worst for me just because we would

:

00:44:18,558 --> 00:44:22,508

do one, one o'clock games because

I was there with Jimmy Johnson.

:

00:44:22,518 --> 00:44:26,388

Jimmy Johnson would want those one

o'clock afternoon games because the,

:

00:44:26,398 --> 00:44:28,978

the, the other team would just be

exhausted by the end of the game

:

00:44:28,988 --> 00:44:32,338

being out in 92 degree with 90.

:

00:44:32,638 --> 00:44:34,248

Eight degree humidity.

:

00:44:35,378 --> 00:44:39,328

And so yeah, so for me on a Sunday, if

we had a game, I'd lose about 12 pounds

:

00:44:39,578 --> 00:44:42,338

and I would spend the whole rest of

the week trying to put that back on.

:

00:44:43,008 --> 00:44:43,778

And so,

:

00:44:43,778 --> 00:44:44,978

Katie: Oh, my

:

00:44:45,218 --> 00:44:49,188

Bill: yeah, so usually at the beginning

of the year, I think I wait, I would

:

00:44:49,198 --> 00:44:52,638

try to weigh somewhere in the, in the

high one nineties and by the end of the

:

00:44:52,638 --> 00:44:59,098

season, I was down to one 72 and the, the

big joke was during the off season when

:

00:44:59,108 --> 00:45:02,988

all like the staff and stuff would be

going on diets, I'd be like eating binge.

:

00:45:03,008 --> 00:45:06,058

I'd just be like, I just eat whatever

I can to try to put all this weight

:

00:45:06,058 --> 00:45:07,588

back on to get ready for the next year.

:

00:45:07,748 --> 00:45:12,048

But I mean, granted, I was still working,

doing appearances and stuff like that,

:

00:45:12,448 --> 00:45:14,858

but yeah, it's usually about 3 an hour.

:

00:45:15,638 --> 00:45:16,548

That's what I would lose.

:

00:45:16,688 --> 00:45:18,718

I mean, most of it was was sweat.

:

00:45:18,738 --> 00:45:19,128

Yeah,

:

00:45:19,168 --> 00:45:19,898

Katie: so much.

:

00:45:20,168 --> 00:45:21,298

Oh, my God.

:

00:45:23,068 --> 00:45:23,538

Wow.

:

00:45:23,538 --> 00:45:24,608

That's like wrestlers

:

00:45:24,608 --> 00:45:25,898

would be envious of that.

:

00:45:25,968 --> 00:45:26,758

I feel like they have

:

00:45:27,003 --> 00:45:27,473

Bill: Oh, I know.

:

00:45:27,473 --> 00:45:28,033

Like people

:

00:45:28,303 --> 00:45:29,203

tease me all the time.

:

00:45:29,203 --> 00:45:30,653

Oh, can I put the suit on for an hour?

:

00:45:30,653 --> 00:45:31,883

I need to lose five pounds.

:

00:45:32,243 --> 00:45:33,933

I'm like, and now you don't

want to, you know, I was like,

:

00:45:33,933 --> 00:45:34,703

you don't want to do that.

:

00:45:34,713 --> 00:45:35,553

You don't want to do that.

:

00:45:35,573 --> 00:45:35,833

Yeah.

:

00:45:38,348 --> 00:45:39,888

Katie: Oh, wild.

:

00:45:40,488 --> 00:45:41,668

I almost don't know where to

:

00:45:41,668 --> 00:45:42,168

go from

:

00:45:42,168 --> 00:45:42,678

there.

:

00:45:43,028 --> 00:45:43,188

Jason Masek: no,

:

00:45:43,288 --> 00:45:44,968

Bill: It's, it's a weird,

it's a weird thing.

:

00:45:44,968 --> 00:45:45,498

You know, it's

:

00:45:45,548 --> 00:45:49,098

I remember my, one of my high school

teachers talking about how nobody,

:

00:45:49,318 --> 00:45:53,258

nobody in our grade would ever

be like a professional athlete.

:

00:45:53,268 --> 00:45:56,243

I'm like, Well, you know, as a

professional mascot, which is even more

:

00:45:56,243 --> 00:45:58,043

rare than being a professional athlete.

:

00:45:58,053 --> 00:45:59,643

So I don't know.

:

00:45:59,643 --> 00:46:01,103

I thought that was, that's kind of cool.

:

00:46:01,123 --> 00:46:02,583

It's a, it's a good story to have.

:

00:46:03,383 --> 00:46:06,503

Like my kid, my kids just like

recently found out about that too.

:

00:46:06,503 --> 00:46:09,833

And you know, they're always kind of

asking questions and anytime I see

:

00:46:09,833 --> 00:46:14,243

someone in any kind of costume, I,

I definitely feel for them for what

:

00:46:14,253 --> 00:46:15,323

they're going through, because at least

:

00:46:16,163 --> 00:46:18,453

like my uniform was built for me.

:

00:46:18,973 --> 00:46:20,503

So, you know, it was mine.

:

00:46:20,513 --> 00:46:22,603

So, you know, I, I could see,

I knew how to move out of it.

:

00:46:22,603 --> 00:46:25,513

And when you think about costume

characters at the museum, parts

:

00:46:25,513 --> 00:46:28,333

of stuff like that, that's

built for multiple people.

:

00:46:28,403 --> 00:46:31,283

So, you know, you're, you're, you

gotta get used to that sight line.

:

00:46:31,713 --> 00:46:34,533

Cause I even know for my costs, like

anytime I had to take a step forward,

:

00:46:34,533 --> 00:46:37,533

the first thing I always had to do was

look down because I would never know

:

00:46:37,533 --> 00:46:39,393

if a kid would come out of nowhere.

:

00:46:40,073 --> 00:46:41,393

Cause that's something I learned early on.

:

00:46:41,393 --> 00:46:43,443

Like I can't come over to give

you a hug and I wouldn't see them.

:

00:46:43,443 --> 00:46:45,243

And then next thing you know,

they get a knee in the face.

:

00:46:45,823 --> 00:46:47,483

But that was something to quickly.

:

00:46:47,483 --> 00:46:48,023

I was like,

:

00:46:48,383 --> 00:46:50,393

yeah, you got to look down and just

:

00:46:51,363 --> 00:46:53,163

cause you're almost like

looking just through a tube.

:

00:46:53,173 --> 00:46:55,023

You don't, you don't really see enough.

:

00:46:55,893 --> 00:46:57,903

It's funny when I go back

and look at memories.

:

00:46:58,463 --> 00:47:00,893

It, to me, it just seemed normal.

:

00:47:00,943 --> 00:47:03,573

Like I could, I could see everything

when I really couldn't see anything.

:

00:47:06,433 --> 00:47:06,913

Katie: Hmm.

:

00:47:06,963 --> 00:47:07,433

You just got

:

00:47:07,433 --> 00:47:08,063

used to it.

:

00:47:09,023 --> 00:47:09,273

Bill: Yeah.

:

00:47:09,273 --> 00:47:13,153

And just, you know, yeah, you have to

exaggerate all your movements and, and,

:

00:47:13,163 --> 00:47:17,763

stuff, and I, I just tried to make it

seem like he was just like, it's just

:

00:47:17,763 --> 00:47:19,733

like a super fan, just like everyone else.

:

00:47:19,733 --> 00:47:20,773

I just try to play it straight.

:

00:47:20,773 --> 00:47:21,073

Cause it's just

:

00:47:21,583 --> 00:47:24,543

like the costume, just being in the

costume itself is ridiculous enough.

:

00:47:25,053 --> 00:47:27,013

So just doing things that.

:

00:47:27,463 --> 00:47:30,273

Ordinary people would do

would just seem bizarre.

:

00:47:30,613 --> 00:47:35,173

And that's what I just, that's just

kinda how I mentally looked into it.

:

00:47:35,173 --> 00:47:37,333

And I was doing appearances and stuff.

:

00:47:37,633 --> 00:47:39,953

I'm just like, I'm just, you know, just

one of the guys just doing everything

:

00:47:39,973 --> 00:47:42,893

that everybody else would do, but it

would just be weird because it's a seven

:

00:47:42,893 --> 00:47:46,713

foot dolphin running around, you know,

playing football with kids or going to a

:

00:47:46,713 --> 00:47:51,043

school and teaching them about teamwork

or, you know, doing a reading with

:

00:47:51,263 --> 00:47:52,833

acting out a book or something like that.

:

00:47:52,843 --> 00:47:56,043

And it's just, it was just so

simple to get kids to laugh

:

00:47:56,043 --> 00:47:57,083

because it was just so silly.

:

00:47:57,103 --> 00:47:59,283

Yeah, it

:

00:48:00,063 --> 00:48:01,833

Katie: Oh, great story.

:

00:48:01,843 --> 00:48:02,973

Thank you for that.

:

00:48:03,583 --> 00:48:07,403

The only other person that I wanted

to mention, because I'm like a big,

:

00:48:07,403 --> 00:48:13,193

huge fan actor Sylvester Stallone

married Jennifer Flavin in London,

:

00:48:13,193 --> 00:48:14,533

which I thought was surprising.

:

00:48:15,083 --> 00:48:18,253

In May of:

they are still married.

:

00:48:18,923 --> 00:48:22,493

There was a, they almost got divorced

last year or the year before.

:

00:48:22,943 --> 00:48:24,943

But they have a reality

:

00:48:24,943 --> 00:48:27,603

show on Paramount now.

:

00:48:27,873 --> 00:48:28,663

It's actually not bad.

:

00:48:28,673 --> 00:48:33,453

I do not care for reality shows,

generally speaking, but because I like

:

00:48:33,633 --> 00:48:38,623

him and it's him and his wife and his

daughters, and they seem pretty genuine.

:

00:48:38,973 --> 00:48:39,273

I don't know.

:

00:48:39,283 --> 00:48:40,733

Have you guys seen it or heard about it?

:

00:48:40,733 --> 00:48:42,323

Hmm.

:

00:48:42,463 --> 00:48:45,783

Bill: through and I almost

wanted to watch it, but yeah,

:

00:48:45,783 --> 00:48:47,553

I was like I'm not a big Jason.

:

00:48:47,553 --> 00:48:47,833

I'll tell you.

:

00:48:47,833 --> 00:48:51,373

I'm not a big TV show person

because It's just I just don't

:

00:48:51,383 --> 00:48:54,093

have the time to dedicate to watch.

:

00:48:54,093 --> 00:48:56,443

That's why I'm more of a movie

because I'm like two and a half hours.

:

00:48:56,443 --> 00:48:58,193

Everything I need to know

is done in that thing.

:

00:48:58,463 --> 00:48:59,543

Whereas the TV show, like,

:

00:49:00,163 --> 00:49:01,123

how many shows do you have?

:

00:49:01,123 --> 00:49:03,283

You've gotten into over the years

and then they get canceled and you're

:

00:49:03,283 --> 00:49:05,783

like, Oh, what, what, what happened?

:

00:49:06,073 --> 00:49:07,513

So I kind of got to that point.

:

00:49:07,553 --> 00:49:12,273

I think the last like major

network show that I watch was lost.

:

00:49:12,793 --> 00:49:16,603

And then when lost went off the air,

I was kind of done with network TV.

:

00:49:16,883 --> 00:49:19,173

Cause I'm just like, I

really got into that show.

:

00:49:19,173 --> 00:49:22,013

And I know a lot of people thought

the ending was disappointing.

:

00:49:22,013 --> 00:49:25,393

I was okay with it, but I'm like,

you're never going to recreate that.

:

00:49:25,533 --> 00:49:31,263

So many shows try to, and they got

a season or two in and they just,

:

00:49:32,073 --> 00:49:32,833

Fell apart.

:

00:49:33,063 --> 00:49:36,483

That was just like it's, it's really

gotta be, I know a show that has a

:

00:49:36,483 --> 00:49:39,078

beginning and end that I'll then watch it.

:

00:49:39,738 --> 00:49:41,678

I finally just started watching

Breaking Bad, and how long

:

00:49:41,678 --> 00:49:42,968

did Breaking Bad come out?

:

00:49:43,368 --> 00:49:44,828

I think I'm only through

the first season right.

:

00:49:44,828 --> 00:49:45,208

now.

:

00:49:45,618 --> 00:49:46,418

So, Yeah.

:

00:49:46,448 --> 00:49:50,288

for me, for me to get into a TV show,

it's, it's, it's gotta be a big deal.

:

00:49:50,378 --> 00:49:51,918

But yeah I haven't watched The Wire yet.

:

00:49:52,098 --> 00:49:53,068

Katie: I think you're going to,

:

00:49:54,148 --> 00:49:55,308

Oh, you should watch the

:

00:49:55,458 --> 00:49:56,648

Bill: I know I hear about it all the time.

:

00:49:56,828 --> 00:49:57,218

Katie: Breaking Bad.

:

00:49:57,218 --> 00:49:57,708

You're choosing

:

00:49:57,708 --> 00:49:57,928

good

:

00:49:57,928 --> 00:49:58,328

ones.

:

00:49:58,608 --> 00:49:58,988

You're here.

:

00:49:58,988 --> 00:49:59,908

You're choosing good

:

00:49:59,988 --> 00:50:02,758

Bill: But I, but I've had some

of the worst luck was like,

:

00:50:03,098 --> 00:50:06,098

When Sopranos came out and everyone

told me I needed to watch the Sopranos.

:

00:50:06,618 --> 00:50:08,158

And then I finally watched an episode.

:

00:50:08,158 --> 00:50:09,448

I'm like, the show is terrible.

:

00:50:09,598 --> 00:50:11,798

And then when the show went off the

air and then like entertainment,

:

00:50:11,878 --> 00:50:15,738

entertainment weekly would do like

their best episodes, worst episodes.

:

00:50:15,988 --> 00:50:20,258

And that they considered like one of the

five worst episodes is the one I watched.

:

00:50:20,758 --> 00:50:23,548

Like even the same with Buffy, the

vampire Slayer, my friends were

:

00:50:23,548 --> 00:50:24,388

like, you got to watch a show.

:

00:50:24,388 --> 00:50:25,348

You got to watch a show.

:

00:50:25,488 --> 00:50:28,908

And I watched the show and it was

actually a show when Sarah Michelle

:

00:50:28,908 --> 00:50:31,638

Gellar was not the Slayer at that point.

:

00:50:32,028 --> 00:50:32,598

That was like.

:

00:50:33,013 --> 00:50:33,753

This show stinks.

:

00:50:33,753 --> 00:50:34,903

What are you guys talking about?

:

00:50:35,103 --> 00:50:38,733

And once again, consider one of the

five worst episodes of that show.

:

00:50:38,733 --> 00:50:43,283

So my timing has always been terrible

And I do have the whole series about

:

00:50:43,283 --> 00:50:45,083

the vampire slayer if I have time.

:

00:50:45,243 --> 00:50:47,913

That's why I just tell my wife

when I'm retired and I'm old, I'll

:

00:50:47,913 --> 00:50:49,453

finally go watch all these old shows.

:

00:50:49,981 --> 00:50:50,551

Jason Masek: And that also

:

00:50:50,551 --> 00:50:52,051

started in 97, did it

:

00:50:53,421 --> 00:50:53,811

Katie: Buffy?

:

00:50:53,831 --> 00:50:54,891

Jason Masek: From what I was

:

00:50:55,221 --> 00:50:55,961

researching.

:

00:50:56,256 --> 00:50:57,086

Bill: That might be right.

:

00:50:57,541 --> 00:50:57,771

Jason Masek: yeah.

:

00:50:58,741 --> 00:50:59,151

yeah.

:

00:50:59,331 --> 00:51:00,201

But I was the opposite.

:

00:51:00,201 --> 00:51:00,921

You know, it's interesting

:

00:51:00,921 --> 00:51:05,301

because I don't recall watching

a great deal of television in 97.

:

00:51:05,311 --> 00:51:09,461

I watched somewhat, but very much a

big fan of film as I still am today.

:

00:51:09,461 --> 00:51:11,641

But I watch so much more television now.

:

00:51:11,861 --> 00:51:17,341

Because of all the, streaming TV

shows, but interestingly enough to find

:

00:51:17,431 --> 00:51:22,881

Breakdown, which we're probably about

to break down shortly it is on Paramount

:

00:51:22,891 --> 00:51:28,861

plus, which is where then of course I saw

the photo for the Stallone reality show.

:

00:51:28,861 --> 00:51:31,451

And I still am interested in

seeing a little bit of it.

:

00:51:31,471 --> 00:51:35,801

I'll probably watch just a bit, just

because I do remember when he had

:

00:51:35,941 --> 00:51:38,171

married Jennifer Flavin and or Flavin.

:

00:51:38,591 --> 00:51:40,151

And I was like, Oh, good for you.

:

00:51:40,151 --> 00:51:40,581

Sly

:

00:51:42,081 --> 00:51:42,531

Katie: Yeah.

:

00:51:42,541 --> 00:51:43,521

Jason Masek: lady, but

:

00:51:43,521 --> 00:51:43,871

yeah.

:

00:51:44,006 --> 00:51:45,286

anything was Stallone in it.

:

00:51:45,286 --> 00:51:46,416

Just being Stallone.

:

00:51:46,416 --> 00:51:47,796

I'm, I'm kind of interested.

:

00:51:48,383 --> 00:51:50,203

Katie: Are you a Stallone guy, too?

:

00:51:50,343 --> 00:51:51,853

Jason Masek: might, I I'd say I am.

:

00:51:51,853 --> 00:51:53,213

I'm I've always been a fan.

:

00:51:53,213 --> 00:51:56,523

I mean, growing up in the eighties in

particular, of course, because of Rocky

:

00:51:56,523 --> 00:52:01,773

and Bill's a bit more of a fan than

I am, but I mean, growing up, he was

:

00:52:01,783 --> 00:52:08,413

definitely the forefront of the action

heroes, the big buff action heroes of

:

00:52:08,413 --> 00:52:09,043

our time.

:

00:52:09,898 --> 00:52:10,158

he

:

00:52:10,158 --> 00:52:12,128

led the way and Just a

:

00:52:12,128 --> 00:52:13,218

talented all around.

:

00:52:13,248 --> 00:52:14,658

I respect his mind.

:

00:52:14,678 --> 00:52:15,928

I respect his talent.

:

00:52:16,268 --> 00:52:22,628

I don't think, I think he's still

underrated as a writer, producer, actor.

:

00:52:22,628 --> 00:52:26,248

I mean, we just covered first blood

and he has a great performance

:

00:52:26,248 --> 00:52:26,798

in that.

:

00:52:26,898 --> 00:52:27,358

But

:

00:52:28,258 --> 00:52:29,448

today now on the

:

00:52:29,448 --> 00:52:33,258

social media, like he's on, I think

I follow him on either Tik Tok or

:

00:52:33,308 --> 00:52:38,363

Instagram, and I was watching And

he's doing his workout at age 77 and

:

00:52:38,393 --> 00:52:42,683

to a gonna fly now, which is a theme

from Rocky and he's looks great.

:

00:52:43,173 --> 00:52:47,063

And I respect the guy for what

he's, he's done for entertainment

:

00:52:47,063 --> 00:52:48,143

and within the business.

:

00:52:48,163 --> 00:52:50,613

And you know, he's had his ups

and downs just like anybody.

:

00:52:50,613 --> 00:52:55,333

And he's been the center of the

tabloids from time to time, but and.

:

00:52:55,733 --> 00:52:57,873

Has a reputation for this,

that, and the other thing.

:

00:52:57,873 --> 00:52:58,913

But now I think he's.

:

00:52:59,763 --> 00:53:02,843

finally getting the respect he

deserves for the, the overall, the

:

00:53:02,843 --> 00:53:05,903

body of work, you know, and he's

still doing it, Tulsa King, all that

:

00:53:07,253 --> 00:53:07,863

definitely a

:

00:53:09,888 --> 00:53:10,168

Bill: Yeah.

:

00:53:10,523 --> 00:53:11,233

Katie: Very well said.

:

00:53:11,233 --> 00:53:11,893

Couldn't have said it better

:

00:53:12,098 --> 00:53:15,038

Bill: Yeah, you couldn't grow up in

Philadelphia and not love Sylvester

:

00:53:15,038 --> 00:53:19,318

Stallone because I remember when they

would show Rocky on, they would show

:

00:53:19,328 --> 00:53:23,648

it like once a year and one of the UHF

channels, this was before cable, that

:

00:53:23,648 --> 00:53:26,758

would get bigger ratings than what

was going on network TV at the time.

:

00:53:26,758 --> 00:53:29,188

And that, you know, back then

we only had four other channels.

:

00:53:29,198 --> 00:53:32,208

That was like a huge event when

Rocky or one of the Rockies

:

00:53:32,208 --> 00:53:33,558

would, would come on TV.

:

00:53:34,058 --> 00:53:36,598

It was, it was almost like, it was

almost like, it was almost like,

:

00:53:37,078 --> 00:53:39,078

When they used to air wizard of Oz.

:

00:53:39,483 --> 00:53:43,043

Every year on television that

that was it for Philadelphians.

:

00:53:43,043 --> 00:53:43,683

It was Rocky.

:

00:53:44,213 --> 00:53:45,993

It was like, all right, you got

to stop everything you're doing.

:

00:53:46,043 --> 00:53:47,133

They're showing Rocky on TV.

:

00:53:48,121 --> 00:53:50,121

Katie: I didn't grow up

in Philadelphia, but I, I,

:

00:53:50,311 --> 00:53:52,071

stopped everything and watched Rocky on TV

:

00:53:52,186 --> 00:53:52,616

Bill: Oh, yeah.

:

00:53:52,906 --> 00:53:53,216

Yeah.

:

00:53:53,246 --> 00:53:57,866

I still get choked up in that scene when

he's in the bedroom with Adrian and he's

:

00:53:57,866 --> 00:53:58,986

like, I'm not going to win this fight.

:

00:53:59,036 --> 00:54:01,976

I just, all I want to do is

just go to even talking about.

:

00:54:01,976 --> 00:54:02,926

I'm like, okay.

:

00:54:03,556 --> 00:54:04,426

I just want to go the distance.

:

00:54:04,496 --> 00:54:05,511

That's all he wanted to do.

:

00:54:05,991 --> 00:54:06,561

It's you know,

:

00:54:07,191 --> 00:54:13,981

Katie: I think he's ruined me for my

expectations of a boyfriend or a husband.

:

00:54:14,361 --> 00:54:15,701

Because I'm like, I want

:

00:54:15,701 --> 00:54:17,781

Rocky and, I want Rocky and Adrian love.

:

00:54:17,791 --> 00:54:17,991

Come

:

00:54:18,356 --> 00:54:19,026

Jason Masek: Oh yeah.

:

00:54:19,026 --> 00:54:19,396

Yeah.

:

00:54:20,696 --> 00:54:21,616

movie kind of love.

:

00:54:21,636 --> 00:54:22,706

That's great stuff.

:

00:54:22,786 --> 00:54:26,016

Seeing as though that you're a huge

Rocky fan and you mentioned being,

:

00:54:27,236 --> 00:54:32,236

the biggest fan of, of Rocky four

in particular, know for Bill and I

:

00:54:32,256 --> 00:54:38,436

being, you know, big eighties fans,

Carl weather's passing recently.

:

00:54:38,841 --> 00:54:39,091

Was a

:

00:54:39,101 --> 00:54:40,831

big hit, in the

:

00:54:40,831 --> 00:54:42,841

way, like it hit as

:

00:54:42,841 --> 00:54:43,371

hard.

:

00:54:43,491 --> 00:54:44,911

It just that was a bummer.

:

00:54:45,041 --> 00:54:45,351

I just.

:

00:54:46,166 --> 00:54:48,836

Didn't know if I'm sure that

affected you as well, but

:

00:54:48,856 --> 00:54:51,016

that, that, that stung, it just

:

00:54:53,216 --> 00:54:53,536

Katie: We,

:

00:54:54,981 --> 00:54:55,261

Bill: Yeah.

:

00:54:55,261 --> 00:54:58,311

Cause he was, you know, actively working

and it just came out of the blue.

:

00:54:58,321 --> 00:55:01,121

It's not like we heard Oh, you know,

he's ill or he's been in the hospital

:

00:55:01,121 --> 00:55:05,241

is Just boom, Carl Weathers passed

away and you're like, Oh my God.

:

00:55:05,241 --> 00:55:07,941

I just, we just saw him

:

00:55:07,986 --> 00:55:08,936

Katie: yeah, he was young.

:

00:55:08,976 --> 00:55:09,536

I mean,

:

00:55:10,186 --> 00:55:10,966

nowadays

:

00:55:11,146 --> 00:55:13,106

seemed, seemed pretty young.

:

00:55:13,706 --> 00:55:14,116

But Yeah.

:

00:55:14,116 --> 00:55:21,086

like he made, we, nobody else

would have been that Apollo Creed.

:

00:55:21,096 --> 00:55:21,576

And we, Yeah.

:

00:55:21,576 --> 00:55:24,026

We talked about him on the

one more round Rocky series

:

00:55:24,026 --> 00:55:26,376

podcast, but apparently he had

:

00:55:26,376 --> 00:55:28,176

heart disease and,

:

00:55:28,711 --> 00:55:29,121

Bill: Yeah.

:

00:55:29,336 --> 00:55:29,956

Katie: it'll get you.

:

00:55:30,251 --> 00:55:30,451

Bill: Yeah.

:

00:55:30,451 --> 00:55:34,061

We had recently did a podcast on

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

:

00:55:34,061 --> 00:55:38,601

with another pod and he, he pops

up and it was like, Oh my God.

:

00:55:38,911 --> 00:55:40,511

It's you know, Carl Weathers.

:

00:55:40,511 --> 00:55:41,011

That's awesome.

:

00:55:41,011 --> 00:55:44,181

I totally forgot he was at, yeah,

he's in it for a quick, quick scene.

:

00:55:44,181 --> 00:55:45,861

He plays a military military

:

00:55:45,861 --> 00:55:46,281

guard.

:

00:55:47,021 --> 00:55:47,421

Yeah.

:

00:55:48,156 --> 00:55:48,826

Katie: interesting.

:

00:55:48,836 --> 00:55:48,956

I

:

00:55:48,956 --> 00:55:49,386

haven't seen

:

00:55:49,396 --> 00:55:49,826

that.

:

00:55:50,671 --> 00:55:51,711

Bill: totally forgot he was in it.

:

00:55:51,711 --> 00:55:52,741

So it was a nice surprise.

:

00:55:55,466 --> 00:55:59,216

Katie: I did want to get your

opinions or your thoughts on our

:

00:55:59,246 --> 00:56:03,436

every man or every men I should

say of this season , of RetroMate.

:

00:56:03,466 --> 00:56:08,676

So we have Kurt Russell who is in our

movie today and also Patrick Swayze.

:

00:56:08,676 --> 00:56:13,796

Do you guys have any thoughts

or fandom about one or both of

:

00:56:13,796 --> 00:56:15,216

them that you'd like to share?

:

00:56:16,186 --> 00:56:17,386

Jason Masek: Where do we begin?

:

00:56:17,606 --> 00:56:23,306

I love that you're focusing on these

actors and I believe just a little

:

00:56:23,466 --> 00:56:25,616

insight to, for the listeners.

:

00:56:25,726 --> 00:56:30,366

That's how we sort of connected

with Katie, if I'm not mistaken.

:

00:56:30,366 --> 00:56:31,286

You had emailed us.

:

00:56:32,471 --> 00:56:37,211

I, I don't know what episode we were

discussing could have been Dirty

:

00:56:37,211 --> 00:56:41,091

Dancing possibly, or, something

:

00:56:41,091 --> 00:56:43,086

else where we were

:

00:56:43,086 --> 00:56:43,936

talking about,

:

00:56:45,116 --> 00:56:47,546

the comparison between Patrick Swayze and

:

00:56:47,546 --> 00:56:47,776

Kurt

:

00:56:47,866 --> 00:56:48,936

Bill: maybe the outsiders

:

00:56:49,051 --> 00:56:50,241

Katie: Oh, yeah, that's

:

00:56:50,286 --> 00:56:50,846

Jason Masek: could be, could

:

00:56:50,846 --> 00:56:50,936

have

:

00:56:50,936 --> 00:56:51,206

been,

:

00:56:51,801 --> 00:56:52,231

Katie: was it?

:

00:56:52,531 --> 00:56:54,911

But yes, you guys were

talking about it's oh my god.

:

00:56:55,031 --> 00:56:55,371

Yeah

:

00:56:55,646 --> 00:56:57,746

Jason Masek: And obviously you could

relate as the, you know, you're,

:

00:56:57,756 --> 00:57:01,156

you're, you're talking about it

yourself on this pod, which is awesome.

:

00:57:01,216 --> 00:57:02,906

Because when I was growing up.

:

00:57:03,251 --> 00:57:07,501

And Bill, I don't think found out about

this until I was sharing probably too much

:

00:57:07,521 --> 00:57:10,191

on our own pod, but I grew up dancing.

:

00:57:11,601 --> 00:57:15,591

I actually was part of a very small

dance troupe out of Lake Villa,

:

00:57:15,631 --> 00:57:17,911

Illinois, very small suburb of Chicago.

:

00:57:18,301 --> 00:57:21,101

And part of Kim Kala's dance studio.

:

00:57:21,101 --> 00:57:26,631

So I was one of only a few, few young

boys that were part of a mostly, you

:

00:57:26,631 --> 00:57:30,331

know, female, populated dance studio.

:

00:57:30,401 --> 00:57:36,576

And You know, practiced ballet and tap

and we called it tumbling back then.

:

00:57:36,606 --> 00:57:37,276

So just all

:

00:57:37,276 --> 00:57:38,756

around gymnastics and things

:

00:57:38,756 --> 00:57:38,936

like

:

00:57:38,936 --> 00:57:39,226

that.

:

00:57:39,236 --> 00:57:40,396

So it was a different time.

:

00:57:40,396 --> 00:57:40,576

And

:

00:57:41,466 --> 00:57:42,606

gave me a lot of.

:

00:57:43,406 --> 00:57:48,116

Experience and strength in both

sports, but also performance.

:

00:57:48,176 --> 00:57:49,966

I hated practice.

:

00:57:50,006 --> 00:57:51,036

I hated rehearsing.

:

00:57:51,056 --> 00:57:56,266

I loved being on stage and I

give so much credit to dancing.

:

00:57:56,596 --> 00:58:01,426

To getting me into the entertainment

world and which eventually would become

:

00:58:01,456 --> 00:58:06,616

acting and whom, of course, would I

end up looking up to and admiring,

:

00:58:07,186 --> 00:58:11,996

but Patrick Swayze because of his

dance background and having such a

:

00:58:11,996 --> 00:58:18,316

particular appreciation for dirty

dancing, the film itself and his control.

:

00:58:18,666 --> 00:58:23,256

Of his body, his physical movements

was always impressive because

:

00:58:23,346 --> 00:58:28,196

obviously experienced in martial

arts and the guy could dance, but he

:

00:58:28,196 --> 00:58:36,096

retains such a specific masculinity

and sexuality and he owned it all.

:

00:58:36,096 --> 00:58:39,306

He could be finesse and

strength at the same

:

00:58:39,306 --> 00:58:39,676

time.

:

00:58:40,586 --> 00:58:41,066

And

:

00:58:41,346 --> 00:58:43,116

he's, uh, obviously

:

00:58:43,376 --> 00:58:47,686

like a pretty man, but a handsome

man, and an everyman rolled into one.

:

00:58:47,936 --> 00:58:50,886

So I always admired, uh, Patrick Swayze.

:

00:58:50,886 --> 00:58:53,316

I'll never forget, I was on an

audition once with his brother.

:

00:58:53,366 --> 00:58:54,686

It was just a general

:

00:58:54,696 --> 00:58:55,996

casting call once, and his

:

00:58:55,996 --> 00:58:56,416

brother,

:

00:58:56,426 --> 00:58:57,026

who also is

:

00:58:57,026 --> 00:58:58,486

an actor, Is that

:

00:58:58,486 --> 00:58:58,856

right?

:

00:58:59,136 --> 00:58:59,276

Uh,

:

00:58:59,511 --> 00:58:59,741

Katie: Don.

:

00:59:00,251 --> 00:59:00,901

The one that looks a

:

00:59:00,906 --> 00:59:01,246

Jason Masek: yes,

:

00:59:01,436 --> 00:59:01,986

yes.

:

00:59:02,751 --> 00:59:04,581

And I was like, Hey, that's

Pat Swayze's brother.

:

00:59:04,631 --> 00:59:09,021

So when Patrick Swayze

passed, I, that also

:

00:59:09,021 --> 00:59:10,321

hit hard and.

:

00:59:10,786 --> 00:59:12,716

Cause I always, always looked up to him.

:

00:59:12,826 --> 00:59:15,196

And I remember one of the last

projects he was working on, I

:

00:59:15,196 --> 00:59:16,806

believe it was like a TV show called

:

00:59:17,116 --> 00:59:18,406

beast or something at the Feminine.

:

00:59:19,011 --> 00:59:19,201

Katie: The

:

00:59:19,226 --> 00:59:19,836

Jason Masek: The beast.

:

00:59:19,836 --> 00:59:20,206

Yeah.

:

00:59:20,536 --> 00:59:21,956

Anyway, I, you know,

:

00:59:22,126 --> 00:59:23,266

so looked up to him.

:

00:59:23,266 --> 00:59:32,346

And then of course, Kurt Russell is just,

again, there's something about movie

:

00:59:32,346 --> 00:59:37,876

stars that are relatable, that you can

admire and look up to at the same time.

:

00:59:37,896 --> 00:59:41,576

So Kurt Russell was the same where

he's obviously, you know, A handsome

:

00:59:41,886 --> 00:59:48,556

leading man, but he is a, such a

talented actor and can do so many

:

00:59:48,556 --> 00:59:52,036

different things it's not out of reach.

:

00:59:52,046 --> 00:59:56,086

It's like, okay, I can, I can see, I can

put myself in this guy's shoes versus

:

00:59:56,096 --> 00:59:59,476

an Arnold Schwarzenegger or a Dolph

Lundgren, or even maybe a Stallone at

:

00:59:59,476 --> 01:00:00,866

times, it's like, I'm

:

01:00:00,866 --> 01:00:01,116

never

:

01:00:01,116 --> 01:00:05,446

going to be that big, or going to be

that tall, or I'm never going to be.

:

01:00:05,811 --> 01:00:06,961

That's a little out of my reach.

:

01:00:06,981 --> 01:00:08,761

These are almost, they have like superhero

:

01:00:08,771 --> 01:00:10,001

status in a way, how we look

:

01:00:10,001 --> 01:00:10,141

at

:

01:00:10,181 --> 01:00:11,381

them as movie stars.

:

01:00:11,661 --> 01:00:16,931

Whereas a Kurt Russell, I'm not

saying I'm nearly, you know, the stud

:

01:00:16,941 --> 01:00:22,041

that Kurt Russell but still, uh, big

trouble in little China comes down.

:

01:00:22,041 --> 01:00:27,391

It's like this guy, what if there's,

if, and this is interesting, I

:

01:00:27,391 --> 01:00:30,041

was thinking about it, if there's

any difference between the two,

:

01:00:30,042 --> 01:00:34,451

it would, I think Kurt Russell has

a real sense of comedic timing.

:

01:00:34,771 --> 01:00:35,901

I think he can be very

:

01:00:35,911 --> 01:00:36,391

funny.

:

01:00:37,326 --> 01:00:37,506

And

:

01:00:37,506 --> 01:00:39,606

he's done comedy and he's

:

01:00:39,606 --> 01:00:43,026

done weird comedy, and then

he can play it straight too.

:

01:00:43,816 --> 01:00:45,796

has a, he has a wonderful emotional range.

:

01:00:45,796 --> 01:00:50,186

So does Patrick Swayze yeah,

it's just the relatable element.

:

01:00:50,376 --> 01:00:54,216

We're gonna get to it in this movie,

but I'm watching Breakdown going, wow.

:

01:00:54,246 --> 01:00:59,446

He plays the intensity and

the fear so well, like he

:

01:00:59,446 --> 01:01:01,066

just seems like a normal dude.

:

01:01:01,066 --> 01:01:02,476

He is the Emry guy.

:

01:01:02,796 --> 01:01:05,476

I've seen him be a hero in

so many movies, but here he's

:

01:01:05,486 --> 01:01:07,276

wearing a polo shirt and khakis.

:

01:01:07,771 --> 01:01:08,101

and

:

01:01:08,101 --> 01:01:08,261

is

:

01:01:08,261 --> 01:01:10,201

getting roughed up and he doesn't even

:

01:01:10,201 --> 01:01:12,071

know how to fix a car

or anything like that.

:

01:01:12,071 --> 01:01:13,341

I'm like, yeah, perfect.

:

01:01:13,541 --> 01:01:15,841

I know this guy because I am that guy.

:

01:01:17,021 --> 01:01:17,701

I believe

:

01:01:17,701 --> 01:01:18,021

him.

:

01:01:18,091 --> 01:01:26,961

The believability is so huge to pull off

the action and then to be so believable

:

01:01:26,961 --> 01:01:30,771

as a human being, I guess, is it's

just, there's a well rounded aspect to

:

01:01:30,771 --> 01:01:37,796

both actors that, you know, untouched,

but these guys, Can, could do it all.

:

01:01:37,796 --> 01:01:38,106

So

:

01:01:38,686 --> 01:01:38,966

much

:

01:01:40,235 --> 01:01:41,155

Katie: Bill, do you have additional

:

01:01:41,195 --> 01:01:43,905

Bill: yeah, I think for me, as you

see, I was, I'm trying to go for the

:

01:01:43,945 --> 01:01:46,825

Kurt Russell, the thing look, even

though I don't have the dark hair

:

01:01:46,835 --> 01:01:47,075

Katie: Ah!

:

01:01:47,075 --> 01:01:48,277

Ha,

:

01:01:48,375 --> 01:01:49,285

Bill: growing out my hair.

:

01:01:49,865 --> 01:01:53,995

Um, but for me, especially Kurt Russell.

:

01:01:53,995 --> 01:01:58,145

I mean, He's been around

forever since he's been a child.

:

01:01:58,145 --> 01:01:59,705

And I remember growing up

:

01:01:59,985 --> 01:02:02,645

watching all those

movies he did for Disney.

:

01:02:02,645 --> 01:02:07,325

The computer wears tennis shoes and the

barefoot executive now see me now you

:

01:02:07,335 --> 01:02:12,680

don't, and I would watch those over and

over and it, but I would, I, It took

:

01:02:12,680 --> 01:02:16,190

me a while to associate that it was

Kurt Russell, but I loved those movies.

:

01:02:16,190 --> 01:02:17,350

I would watch them all the time.

:

01:02:18,340 --> 01:02:23,800

And then We get into the eighties and

I mean, you talk about cult movies, all

:

01:02:23,800 --> 01:02:27,290

the stuff he did with John Carpenter,

you know, the thing big trouble in

:

01:02:27,290 --> 01:02:29,800

little China escape from New York.

:

01:02:30,100 --> 01:02:33,050

So he's just been around forever.

:

01:02:33,140 --> 01:02:34,490

And it was weird.

:

01:02:34,490 --> 01:02:38,950

Cause I think when we did our first First

movie about Russell, you would think he

:

01:02:38,950 --> 01:02:43,620

was like, Oh, he's such a big star, but

none of his movies ever really did huge

:

01:02:43,620 --> 01:02:45,460

until he did gardens of the galaxy too.

:

01:02:45,880 --> 01:02:47,910

I mean, they did okay.

:

01:02:48,170 --> 01:02:49,390

Nothing did great.

:

01:02:49,440 --> 01:02:53,080

Even like breakdown, like breakdown

was considered a sleeper hit, but it

:

01:02:53,080 --> 01:02:56,460

doesn't, it, you know, it doesn't do

boffo box office, but it was a movie.

:

01:02:56,460 --> 01:02:58,120

A lot of people talked

about it and it did well.

:

01:02:58,120 --> 01:03:00,890

They weren't expecting

it to even do anything.

:

01:03:02,000 --> 01:03:04,790

So he's just, he's just someone

that's always been there for

:

01:03:04,790 --> 01:03:06,880

as long as I can remember.

:

01:03:06,930 --> 01:03:10,440

And then one of the things I like to

do is I'll, I'll pick like an actor or

:

01:03:10,440 --> 01:03:12,210

something and just watch as many movies.

:

01:03:12,210 --> 01:03:16,880

I kind of that person and I got into this

whole Elvis kick and here I am watching it

:

01:03:16,890 --> 01:03:18,680

happened at the world's fair with Elvis.

:

01:03:19,210 --> 01:03:23,120

And there's a, a little young Kurt

Russell, like maybe he's eight

:

01:03:23,120 --> 01:03:25,710

or nine years old and he's like

maybe in two or three scenes.

:

01:03:25,720 --> 01:03:27,820

And I'm like, Oh my God, this

guy's been around forever.

:

01:03:27,820 --> 01:03:29,280

It's, it's just amazing.

:

01:03:29,600 --> 01:03:32,730

So yeah, I just feel like Kurt

Russell has just been a part of my

:

01:03:32,730 --> 01:03:34,000

life for as long as I can remember.

:

01:03:34,000 --> 01:03:37,660

I've always just, you know, if he's in a

movie, I got to watch it just because I've

:

01:03:37,690 --> 01:03:39,770

just tried to see everything that he's in.

:

01:03:40,965 --> 01:03:45,465

And then as for Patrick Swayze, I

probably did not follow him as much.

:

01:03:46,005 --> 01:03:49,955

And it's, it's strange because

he's in so many iconic films, like

:

01:03:49,965 --> 01:03:52,215

when his movies hit, they hit.

:

01:03:52,585 --> 01:03:54,515

You know, the outsiders

is such a big deal.

:

01:03:54,685 --> 01:03:56,395

Like red Dawn was such a big thing.

:

01:03:56,395 --> 01:04:00,305

Cause it was the first, you know, PT

13 movie that was released in theaters.

:

01:04:00,975 --> 01:04:03,775

And then you know, it goes on to

dirty dancing, which is one of the

:

01:04:03,775 --> 01:04:05,985

biggest sleeper hits of all time.

:

01:04:06,435 --> 01:04:10,415

Then, you know, then he does ghost

you know, it did that TV series North

:

01:04:10,415 --> 01:04:12,245

and South, which was huge back then.

:

01:04:12,635 --> 01:04:13,295

Katie: Mm hmm.

:

01:04:13,415 --> 01:04:14,885

Bill: So like his career.

:

01:04:15,425 --> 01:04:15,805

Oh, yeah.

:

01:04:15,805 --> 01:04:16,335

roadhouse.

:

01:04:16,595 --> 01:04:17,075

Yes.

:

01:04:17,315 --> 01:04:18,075

I mean that.

:

01:04:18,465 --> 01:04:19,015

Yeah.

:

01:04:19,065 --> 01:04:19,845

exactly.

:

01:04:20,465 --> 01:04:21,705

So he did

:

01:04:22,065 --> 01:04:24,205

such like these macho men

:

01:04:25,365 --> 01:04:29,145

but then he would turn around

and do ghost and and like dirty

:

01:04:29,145 --> 01:04:30,605

dancing and stuff like that.

:

01:04:30,605 --> 01:04:33,615

So I always felt like his career

was kind of a roller coaster,

:

01:04:33,615 --> 01:04:35,345

but man, his highs were high.

:

01:04:36,125 --> 01:04:38,145

But unfortunately, his lows were low.

:

01:04:38,515 --> 01:04:39,185

But Yeah.

:

01:04:39,185 --> 01:04:43,595

when he like, you know, heard about

the cancer and it's just like,

:

01:04:44,255 --> 01:04:49,545

man, well, I mean, you never heard

a bad thing about Patrick Swayze.

:

01:04:50,335 --> 01:04:53,645

It was always one of the, probably

the nicest people in Hollywood.

:

01:04:54,035 --> 01:04:56,545

And just something like that to happen.

:

01:04:57,025 --> 01:04:58,965

It's just, it just sucks.

:

01:04:58,995 --> 01:04:59,695

It just sucks.

:

01:05:00,590 --> 01:05:00,950

Jason Masek: Yeah.

:

01:05:01,130 --> 01:05:02,400

Uh, that was one of the, yeah.

:

01:05:02,450 --> 01:05:03,200

Really well said.

:

01:05:03,200 --> 01:05:07,680

And was going to say Patrick Swayze

made me feel like it was okay to

:

01:05:07,690 --> 01:05:09,460

be a dancer, but like you can be.

:

01:05:10,090 --> 01:05:11,840

Masculine and be a dancer.

:

01:05:11,840 --> 01:05:14,190

Cause it was just looked upon

differently when I was very young

:

01:05:14,190 --> 01:05:15,290

in the early eighties

:

01:05:15,700 --> 01:05:17,390

and he brought such a

:

01:05:17,390 --> 01:05:19,550

strength and was the example.

:

01:05:19,550 --> 01:05:22,120

And it was one of those things where

it's like, men want to be him.

:

01:05:22,130 --> 01:05:23,460

Women want to be with him.

:

01:05:23,490 --> 01:05:27,180

You know, it's kind of that thing

that I looked up to, but Bill

:

01:05:27,180 --> 01:05:30,830

was nailing it right there at the

end with the likability factor.

:

01:05:31,170 --> 01:05:34,010

How do you know anytime it's

like with a lot of your favorite

:

01:05:34,010 --> 01:05:35,779

character actors, but these guys were

:

01:05:35,790 --> 01:05:36,390

leads.

:

01:05:37,154 --> 01:05:37,425

And

:

01:05:37,515 --> 01:05:39,625

anytime they show up in a movie, you hear

:

01:05:39,625 --> 01:05:40,045

their name.

:

01:05:40,045 --> 01:05:41,465

You're like, I'll go see that.

:

01:05:41,625 --> 01:05:42,695

I'll watch it eventually.

:

01:05:42,695 --> 01:05:45,615

If I don't running down to the

theater, I'll watch because

:

01:05:46,055 --> 01:05:47,575

I like seeing their faces.

:

01:05:47,654 --> 01:05:49,485

I want to see what Kurt Russell does.

:

01:05:49,515 --> 01:05:51,195

I want to see what Patrick Swayze does.

:

01:05:52,225 --> 01:05:53,735

Cause he's just cool.

:

01:05:54,515 --> 01:05:54,995

cool.

:

01:05:55,125 --> 01:05:58,265

And it looks, and he seems like

a dude I could have a beer with.

:

01:05:59,015 --> 01:06:00,565

And I'd want to hear his stories.

:

01:06:00,595 --> 01:06:05,285

And sure enough, even now, Kurt Russell

showing up on Monarch Legacy of Monsters.

:

01:06:05,285 --> 01:06:07,055

He's doing a Godzilla TV show.

:

01:06:07,305 --> 01:06:10,175

The only reason I watched the first

few episodes is because he's in it.

:

01:06:10,585 --> 01:06:11,575

He doesn't show up to the

:

01:06:11,575 --> 01:06:12,985

second or third episode and he

:

01:06:12,985 --> 01:06:13,785

looks awesome.

:

01:06:14,125 --> 01:06:14,475

I'm like,

:

01:06:15,015 --> 01:06:15,425

Katie: Yeah.

:

01:06:18,590 --> 01:06:19,120

yeah.

:

01:06:19,135 --> 01:06:21,205

Bill: the Santa Claus

movies He's been doing.

:

01:06:21,425 --> 01:06:24,215

I'm like, Oh, I'm watching this

because I want to see Kurt Russell's

:

01:06:24,400 --> 01:06:24,810

Katie: the gray

:

01:06:24,995 --> 01:06:25,625

Bill: He does.

:

01:06:25,935 --> 01:06:29,135

Jason Masek: He's been with

Goldie Hawn forever and

:

01:06:29,160 --> 01:06:30,510

Katie: Yeah, I love that they're not

:

01:06:30,745 --> 01:06:32,865

Jason Masek: yeah,

that's such a cool thing.

:

01:06:33,255 --> 01:06:37,725

And if you hear any of his interviews,

even, and you know, I've heard he was

:

01:06:37,855 --> 01:06:41,512

like, he shows up and he's Smelling like

marbles and wearing a leather jacket, and

:

01:06:41,512 --> 01:06:45,242

it's exactly how you think he would be,

and then he tells the coolest stories,

:

01:06:45,242 --> 01:06:47,352

and he sounds like the coolest dude.

:

01:06:48,022 --> 01:06:49,202

like, I want to hang with Kurt

:

01:06:53,221 --> 01:06:54,892

Bill: we, we almost lost him to sports.

:

01:06:54,892 --> 01:06:57,492

He was, you know, he really

wanted to be a baseball player and

:

01:06:57,492 --> 01:06:59,112

played minor leagues for a while.

:

01:06:59,122 --> 01:07:02,582

So I'm glad that didn't work

out to benefit all of us.

:

01:07:03,412 --> 01:07:04,002

So thank you.

:

01:07:04,162 --> 01:07:05,221

Katie: Yes, indeed.

:

01:07:06,052 --> 01:07:06,792

Oh My gosh, you.

:

01:07:06,792 --> 01:07:10,192

guys are just like I'm loving hearing

your thoughts on these two because

:

01:07:10,202 --> 01:07:13,622

that's how it like Obviously, I I think

very highly of both of them because

:

01:07:13,622 --> 01:07:17,082

I put them in a season together But

there's another reason I put them in

:

01:07:17,082 --> 01:07:19,346

a season together You I think they

:

01:07:19,346 --> 01:07:20,087

look alike.

:

01:07:20,397 --> 01:07:20,987

Do you?

:

01:07:21,732 --> 01:07:25,012

Bill: How the two of them

never did a movie together is

:

01:07:25,512 --> 01:07:26,152

beyond me.

:

01:07:27,372 --> 01:07:27,752

They,

:

01:07:28,002 --> 01:07:29,002

Jason Masek: they could have played

:

01:07:29,002 --> 01:07:30,322

family in a movie.

:

01:07:30,772 --> 01:07:31,372

Bill: Yes.

:

01:07:31,732 --> 01:07:32,532

Jason Masek: I think they're close

:

01:07:32,532 --> 01:07:35,022

enough, looks

:

01:07:35,022 --> 01:07:35,362

wise.

:

01:07:35,652 --> 01:07:36,802

That's a great call, Katie.

:

01:07:36,802 --> 01:07:37,212

I was,

:

01:07:37,471 --> 01:07:40,562

Cause I had listened to your Red

Dawn episode just recently, and,

:

01:07:40,842 --> 01:07:45,846

and You, I think, mentioned that at

least briefly, if not more, in that

:

01:07:45,846 --> 01:07:50,807

episode, and then while I thought of

that, watching Breakdown, there's,

:

01:07:50,837 --> 01:07:52,487

it's, a lot of it is in the facial

:

01:07:52,487 --> 01:07:53,087

structure.

:

01:07:53,137 --> 01:07:53,877

There's something to

:

01:07:53,877 --> 01:07:54,117

do

:

01:07:54,117 --> 01:07:56,367

with the absolute square jaw.

:

01:07:56,777 --> 01:07:59,096

Their heads are basically squares.

:

01:07:59,882 --> 01:08:01,182

And it's great.

:

01:08:01,182 --> 01:08:03,322

Like it's, it looks great on the

:

01:08:03,322 --> 01:08:04,012

movie screen.

:

01:08:04,862 --> 01:08:05,092

what,

:

01:08:05,102 --> 01:08:05,942

that's why.

:

01:08:06,217 --> 01:08:10,447

Katie: like rugged but pretty

at the same time somehow.

:

01:08:10,497 --> 01:08:10,907

Yeah,

:

01:08:11,772 --> 01:08:12,412

Jason Masek: And

:

01:08:13,372 --> 01:08:14,692

in the eyes I noticed like Kurt

:

01:08:14,692 --> 01:08:15,992

Russell's got great eyes.

:

01:08:16,011 --> 01:08:16,801

He's got beautiful

:

01:08:16,801 --> 01:08:18,662

eyes, really popping in this movie

:

01:08:18,662 --> 01:08:19,162

breakdown.

:

01:08:19,162 --> 01:08:19,461

I was like,

:

01:08:19,502 --> 01:08:21,432

dang, he's got really pretty eyes.

:

01:08:22,267 --> 01:08:23,827

but there's definitely, it's for

:

01:08:23,827 --> 01:08:27,827

me, it's the jawline,

general facial structure and

:

01:08:29,367 --> 01:08:30,057

hair

:

01:08:30,256 --> 01:08:31,006

hair,

:

01:08:31,207 --> 01:08:32,277

hair, forever.

:

01:08:32,912 --> 01:08:36,952

These guys got some lettuce on

their head, they got some serious

:

01:08:36,952 --> 01:08:39,272

mops, and I've always been jealous.

:

01:08:39,272 --> 01:08:40,282

I've just been like, man.

:

01:08:40,711 --> 01:08:41,461

How do they get it?

:

01:08:41,532 --> 01:08:42,622

So wavy

:

01:08:42,622 --> 01:08:43,292

and thick

:

01:08:44,437 --> 01:08:45,937

Katie: Both great quality.

:

01:08:46,027 --> 01:08:47,397

The next of kin episode.

:

01:08:47,466 --> 01:08:52,737

I made the statement that there

are exactly 2 people on the planet

:

01:08:52,777 --> 01:08:54,497

that could ever pull off a mullet.

:

01:08:54,497 --> 01:08:55,987

And it's those 2 and that's it.

:

01:08:56,466 --> 01:08:57,477

That was my statement.

:

01:08:57,822 --> 01:08:58,042

Jason Masek: for

:

01:08:58,197 --> 01:08:58,487

Katie: But

:

01:08:59,817 --> 01:09:02,336

Bill: And maybe Richard Dean Anderson from

:

01:09:02,532 --> 01:09:02,792

Jason Masek: ah,

:

01:09:04,267 --> 01:09:04,947

Katie: MacGyver?

:

01:09:04,947 --> 01:09:05,657

Yeah, yeah, Yeah,

:

01:09:05,707 --> 01:09:06,277

Bill: but yes,

:

01:09:06,897 --> 01:09:08,886

is, that is a very small list.

:

01:09:08,907 --> 01:09:09,846

That's for sure.

:

01:09:10,167 --> 01:09:13,447

But yes, they, they would

be definitely the top five.

:

01:09:15,247 --> 01:09:17,247

Katie: Well, should we get

into the movie breakdown?

:

01:09:22,817 --> 01:09:23,346

Bill: Let us

:

01:09:23,551 --> 01:09:24,062

Jason Masek: to do it.

:

01:09:25,336 --> 01:09:27,277

Katie: Alright, it's rated R, and it.

:

01:09:27,297 --> 01:09:29,317

has a 7 on IMDB.

:

01:09:29,966 --> 01:09:32,527

Jonathan Mostow was the

director and writer.

:

01:09:33,057 --> 01:09:36,096

You might know him from

Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines.

:

01:09:36,187 --> 01:09:39,317

And then, Sam Montgomery

was an additional writer.

:

01:09:40,697 --> 01:09:46,827

He wrote a few episodes of 24

and U571, which Jonathan Mostow

:

01:09:47,377 --> 01:09:47,777

also

:

01:09:47,997 --> 01:09:48,787

Bill: love

:

01:09:49,707 --> 01:09:49,926

you.

:

01:09:49,937 --> 01:09:50,756

Five, seven, one.

:

01:09:51,627 --> 01:09:51,997

I got,

:

01:09:52,247 --> 01:09:52,846

Katie: I don't think I've

:

01:09:52,977 --> 01:09:56,957

Bill: I, I saw that in the theater with

my mom and they had the surround sound.

:

01:09:58,067 --> 01:10:01,937

And there's, you know, I, I love

submarine movies and I love boxing movies.

:

01:10:01,937 --> 01:10:04,317

And I always joke, if they could

make a boxing movie that took

:

01:10:04,317 --> 01:10:06,837

place in a submarine, it would

be the greatest movie ever.

:

01:10:07,637 --> 01:10:11,257

But there's of course, you know,

every submarine movie, you, you have

:

01:10:11,257 --> 01:10:14,807

that scene when they're, you know,

the death charges are coming down

:

01:10:14,847 --> 01:10:16,247

and because they're being attacked.

:

01:10:17,432 --> 01:10:23,442

And just like the theater was literally

vibrating because of the sound design

:

01:10:23,442 --> 01:10:28,877

in that movie and Matthew McConaughey's

in it and actually yeah, and Jack

:

01:10:28,897 --> 01:10:32,907

Jack knows where the who plays Billy

in this movie is also in you 571.

:

01:10:33,807 --> 01:10:34,317

So, yes.

:

01:10:35,012 --> 01:10:36,092

Check, check it out.

:

01:10:36,092 --> 01:10:37,822

Yeah, it's, it's a good one.

:

01:10:39,139 --> 01:10:44,159

Katie: Speaking of Red Dawn, Jason, Basel

Palidorus also composed the music in that.

:

01:10:44,159 --> 01:10:44,239

Yeah.

:

01:10:45,289 --> 01:10:46,289

So he did this music.

:

01:10:46,739 --> 01:10:49,199

And then from a cast perspective,

we have Kurt Russell as our

:

01:10:49,199 --> 01:10:50,899

main character, Jeff Taylor.

:

01:10:51,399 --> 01:10:57,559

And his wife her name in the movie is

Amy and she's played by Kathleen Quinlan.

:

01:10:58,239 --> 01:11:02,189

I am unfamiliar with her, but apparently

she was nominated for an Oscar for her

:

01:11:02,189 --> 01:11:04,189

supporting role in Apollo 13.

:

01:11:04,549 --> 01:11:04,889

Bill: Yes.

:

01:11:04,889 --> 01:11:05,869

I think she played.

:

01:11:05,959 --> 01:11:07,039

Katie: got her break in American

:

01:11:07,129 --> 01:11:12,169

Bill: Yeah, that I was super surprised to

hear that she had been around that long.

:

01:11:12,599 --> 01:11:15,899

But she has, yeah, she has

a, a very long filmography.

:

01:11:16,409 --> 01:11:16,799

Yeah.

:

01:11:16,839 --> 01:11:17,439

And

:

01:11:17,439 --> 01:11:19,719

It's kind of like here, here she is.

:

01:11:19,729 --> 01:11:22,439

She gets, you know, Hey, you get

to do a movie with Kurt Russell.

:

01:11:22,459 --> 01:11:24,809

You gotta be super excited, but

you're only on screen for 20

:

01:11:24,809 --> 01:11:26,969

minutes, you know, it's ah, damn it.

:

01:11:29,094 --> 01:11:33,794

Katie: unfortunately, of all the

cast, she, I would have recast her

:

01:11:35,634 --> 01:11:36,484

in this movie.

:

01:11:36,629 --> 01:11:39,449

Bill: So you don't, you don't, you don't

think the two of them work together?

:

01:11:41,094 --> 01:11:45,443

Katie: well, there wasn't, it was

just, eh there's nothing wrong with it.

:

01:11:45,484 --> 01:11:46,734

I just, I don't know.

:

01:11:47,414 --> 01:11:50,544

And, you know, I almost, this

is going to sound terrible,

:

01:11:50,544 --> 01:11:53,334

but I think we need somebody

touch prettier, like somebody

:

01:11:53,334 --> 01:11:54,684

a touch prettier too.

:

01:11:55,074 --> 01:11:55,474

Maybe?

:

01:11:55,724 --> 01:11:56,094

Well,

:

01:11:56,774 --> 01:11:57,044

Jason Masek: I,

:

01:11:57,149 --> 01:11:57,939

Bill: Who would you, who would you

:

01:11:58,134 --> 01:11:58,824

Jason Masek: that opinion.

:

01:11:58,824 --> 01:11:59,424

I, understand.

:

01:12:01,184 --> 01:12:02,624

Katie: I wouldn't put a big name.

:

01:12:02,624 --> 01:12:05,693

I don't think we needed another

big name, but I, I don't know.

:

01:12:05,693 --> 01:12:07,484

I, I'm not sure.

:

01:12:08,554 --> 01:12:09,634

Jason Masek: Yeah, I'm

trying to think of other

:

01:12:10,924 --> 01:12:13,494

Katie: Like maybe even like

an Annette Bening type,

:

01:12:13,939 --> 01:12:14,589

Bill: Gotcha.

:

01:12:15,114 --> 01:12:15,704

Katie: I don't know.

:

01:12:17,399 --> 01:12:20,769

Bill: For me, I felt they

kind of worked together, but.

:

01:12:21,289 --> 01:12:24,068

I totally understand

what you're saying too.

:

01:12:24,089 --> 01:12:28,929

Like she's attractive,

but not, I don't, know.

:

01:12:29,619 --> 01:12:33,419

She, yeah, she kind of, she's kind of on

that, on that fence scale, to be honest.

:

01:12:34,693 --> 01:12:35,254

Katie: Mm hmm.

:

01:12:35,264 --> 01:12:35,824

Mm hmm.

:

01:12:36,154 --> 01:12:36,414

Jason Masek: I don't,

:

01:12:36,434 --> 01:12:36,604

you

:

01:12:36,604 --> 01:12:38,554

know, there's Kurt Russell's

:

01:12:38,614 --> 01:12:39,954

just freaking Kurt Russell.

:

01:12:39,984 --> 01:12:44,924

So to match his presence,

maybe that's just the factor

:

01:12:44,924 --> 01:12:46,484

in itself, is a presence thing.

:

01:12:46,484 --> 01:12:49,774

Maybe it required more of a

quote unquote movie star to

:

01:12:49,784 --> 01:12:51,104

make an appearance in that role.

:

01:12:51,859 --> 01:12:52,789

But even though it is a

:

01:12:52,799 --> 01:12:53,359

small role,

:

01:12:53,359 --> 01:12:54,499

but I actually am

:

01:12:54,574 --> 01:12:54,914

Katie: It is

:

01:12:54,989 --> 01:12:56,568

Jason Masek: uh, I am a fan of hers.

:

01:12:56,589 --> 01:12:57,939

I think she's very likable.

:

01:12:57,979 --> 01:12:58,919

I find her very

:

01:12:58,919 --> 01:13:00,269

attractive personally, but that's a

:

01:13:00,269 --> 01:13:00,579

taste

:

01:13:00,609 --> 01:13:00,909

thing.

:

01:13:01,179 --> 01:13:01,818

It's really just

:

01:13:01,818 --> 01:13:01,889

a

:

01:13:01,889 --> 01:13:02,489

taste thing.

:

01:13:02,759 --> 01:13:03,929

I am a fan of

:

01:13:03,929 --> 01:13:05,209

her in the doors.

:

01:13:05,239 --> 01:13:05,539

I was a

:

01:13:05,539 --> 01:13:06,989

fan of hers in Apollo 13,

:

01:13:06,999 --> 01:13:11,689

but also which came out this year,

one of my sci fi cult favorites.

:

01:13:12,404 --> 01:13:16,094

Sci cult favorites is Event Horizon,

:

01:13:16,664 --> 01:13:18,114

and she's fantastic in

:

01:13:18,124 --> 01:13:18,634

that,

:

01:13:18,954 --> 01:13:19,664

and she co

:

01:13:19,664 --> 01:13:23,684

stars alongside Noseworthy.

:

01:13:24,314 --> 01:13:24,894

And

:

01:13:24,994 --> 01:13:26,214

Katie: Really?

:

01:13:27,404 --> 01:13:31,409

Jason Masek: much a mother figure

to his character in the movie.

:

01:13:31,739 --> 01:13:34,849

The film, and I think nicknames

in something like baby bear or

:

01:13:34,849 --> 01:13:36,209

something like those lines, but

:

01:13:36,419 --> 01:13:38,479

listeners can chime in

and correct me on that.

:

01:13:38,959 --> 01:13:43,429

They have a very, very distinct connection

in that film, both Kathleen Quinlan

:

01:13:43,529 --> 01:13:44,849

and Jack Noseworthy in that movie.

:

01:13:44,849 --> 01:13:46,859

And I love that movie with Sam Neill.

:

01:13:46,859 --> 01:13:49,509

And it's really freaky, but anyway.

:

01:13:49,884 --> 01:13:50,664

Kathleen Quinlan.

:

01:13:50,684 --> 01:13:51,984

She definitely had

:

01:13:51,994 --> 01:13:52,684

her moment.

:

01:13:52,974 --> 01:13:55,184

Now, think she's a talented

:

01:13:56,544 --> 01:13:57,154

It's kind of like

:

01:13:59,119 --> 01:13:59,419

Bill: If you

:

01:13:59,424 --> 01:14:01,224

Jason Masek: could go, it's,

you could be of two minds.

:

01:14:01,554 --> 01:14:01,804

Yeah.

:

01:14:01,804 --> 01:14:03,034

You want somebody to pop

:

01:14:03,774 --> 01:14:04,494

on screen

:

01:14:04,504 --> 01:14:04,724

for

:

01:14:04,774 --> 01:14:06,534

if there, but also maybe it's

:

01:14:09,824 --> 01:14:10,204

Katie: Yeah.

:

01:14:10,639 --> 01:14:10,919

Bill: yeah.

:

01:14:10,929 --> 01:14:14,199

If I think if they, no, I'm just saying

if they did recast her, I don't think

:

01:14:14,199 --> 01:14:16,109

I would have a big issue with it.

:

01:14:16,179 --> 01:14:17,029

I wouldn't be like, Oh my God,

:

01:14:17,369 --> 01:14:17,959

she's, she

:

01:14:17,959 --> 01:14:18,939

has to be in that role.

:

01:14:18,959 --> 01:14:19,309

now.

:

01:14:19,504 --> 01:14:21,044

Katie: Mm hmm.

:

01:14:21,904 --> 01:14:23,394

Jack Noseworthy is So

:

01:14:23,394 --> 01:14:24,544

he, he's in this.

:

01:14:24,544 --> 01:14:25,394

He plays Billy.

:

01:14:25,394 --> 01:14:26,814

He's kind of one of the bad guys.

:

01:14:27,214 --> 01:14:29,934

And he's one of those very familiar faces.

:

01:14:29,984 --> 01:14:30,674

You know him.

:

01:14:30,674 --> 01:14:32,174

You're like, what do I know him from?

:

01:14:32,184 --> 01:14:33,204

He's one of those guys.

:

01:14:33,824 --> 01:14:36,534

Um, he played Bobby in Alive.

:

01:14:37,644 --> 01:14:40,314

And also Bobby in Killing Kennedy,

:

01:14:41,004 --> 01:14:41,874

the TV series.

:

01:14:42,094 --> 01:14:42,954

So, you know,

:

01:14:43,299 --> 01:14:45,289

Bill: Jason, do we, do

we see a life together?

:

01:14:46,674 --> 01:14:47,294

Jason Masek: I want to say

:

01:14:48,579 --> 01:14:53,059

Bill: Yeah, yeah, I think that was

like one of the first things we did.

:

01:14:53,059 --> 01:14:58,609

coming back from break and I just remember

watching that just feeling so much tension

:

01:14:58,609 --> 01:15:02,729

throughout that whole movie because there

was even like a scene where they're trying

:

01:15:02,729 --> 01:15:07,079

to have fun where they're like sledding

in the mountains just to try to change it

:

01:15:07,079 --> 01:15:09,889

up and the whole time I was just dreading

oh, my God, they're going to fall off

:

01:15:09,889 --> 01:15:13,049

the side of the mountain or the snow

is going to I couldn't even enjoy the

:

01:15:13,049 --> 01:15:16,369

scene that they were trying to enjoy just

because of the situation they were in.

:

01:15:17,764 --> 01:15:18,134

Katie: It is a

:

01:15:18,134 --> 01:15:18,914

stressful movie.

:

01:15:18,924 --> 01:15:19,704

Good movie.

:

01:15:19,854 --> 01:15:20,734

Jason Masek: a new iteration of

:

01:15:20,734 --> 01:15:20,934

that

:

01:15:20,979 --> 01:15:21,649

Bill: yeah, I was going to say.

:

01:15:21,649 --> 01:15:21,919

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

:

01:15:21,943 --> 01:15:22,554

Jason Masek: is yeah.

:

01:15:22,554 --> 01:15:22,604

New

:

01:15:23,443 --> 01:15:24,054

just came out.

:

01:15:24,164 --> 01:15:24,454

Yeah.

:

01:15:25,104 --> 01:15:25,634

Katie: That's right.

:

01:15:25,634 --> 01:15:26,774

I saw that pop up.

:

01:15:26,814 --> 01:15:27,254

Yeah.

:

01:15:27,443 --> 01:15:28,904

A friend recommended it to me and I

:

01:15:28,904 --> 01:15:30,244

was like, is that the alive story?

:

01:15:30,254 --> 01:15:31,174

And she didn't know what I was

:

01:15:31,284 --> 01:15:31,614

about.

:

01:15:31,674 --> 01:15:31,784

I'm

:

01:15:31,784 --> 01:15:32,294

like, oh, dear.

:

01:15:32,294 --> 01:15:32,654

Okay.

:

01:15:33,854 --> 01:15:34,204

Yeah.

:

01:15:34,209 --> 01:15:34,449

Bill: Yeah.

:

01:15:34,449 --> 01:15:37,039

And for the longest time, . He

always had that distinct hair

:

01:15:37,799 --> 01:15:40,818

that it was kind of, he kind of

had that mop top for a while that

:

01:15:40,818 --> 01:15:42,229

he would kind of like brush back.

:

01:15:42,229 --> 01:15:43,889

And but yeah, the face definitely.

:

01:15:43,889 --> 01:15:44,999

But yeah, the hair, I can always

:

01:15:44,999 --> 01:15:45,649

remember to

:

01:15:46,407 --> 01:15:51,437

Katie: JT Walsh, this was like

his last film before, like that

:

01:15:51,437 --> 01:15:53,237

was released before his passing.

:

01:15:53,797 --> 01:15:58,327

And Kurt Russell has said, so JT

listeners, sorry, I'm all over the board.

:

01:15:58,337 --> 01:16:00,057

JT Walsh plays the main bad guy.

:

01:16:00,057 --> 01:16:02,167

His name is Red in the movie.

:

01:16:02,507 --> 01:16:05,887

And he was actually in Backdraft

with Kurt Russell also.

:

01:16:05,917 --> 01:16:08,047

So we talked about him in that episode.

:

01:16:08,497 --> 01:16:14,857

But he was also like a few good men and

um, Sling Blade, but Kurt Russell has said

:

01:16:14,907 --> 01:16:20,107

in interviews, or he's mentioned that,

that JT Walsh is his favorite American

:

01:16:20,107 --> 01:16:20,697

actor.

:

01:16:22,497 --> 01:16:22,967

Mm

:

01:16:22,977 --> 01:16:22,987

hmm.

:

01:16:23,052 --> 01:16:23,652

Bill: of the greatest,

:

01:16:23,832 --> 01:16:23,982

Jason Masek: say

:

01:16:24,187 --> 01:16:24,707

Bill: of all time.

:

01:16:25,177 --> 01:16:25,567

Yeah,

:

01:16:26,717 --> 01:16:27,307

on screen.

:

01:16:28,107 --> 01:16:30,497

I think we covered him in

a good morning Vietnam.

:

01:16:31,362 --> 01:16:33,592

yeah, you just, you just

like to not like him.

:

01:16:34,382 --> 01:16:35,682

He, he was just so good at that.

:

01:16:36,247 --> 01:16:37,817

Katie: Yeah, he's, yeah, yeah.

:

01:16:38,207 --> 01:16:42,407

Well, MC Gainley, who plays

another bad guy, he plays Earl in

:

01:16:42,407 --> 01:16:44,967

this, he has a lot of TV credits.

:

01:16:46,412 --> 01:16:50,152

Movies like he was in Wild

Hogs, Con Air, and The Sheriff

:

01:16:50,182 --> 01:16:52,252

in the:

:

01:16:52,432 --> 01:16:57,132

He has said that he didn't like,

his character in this was so

:

01:16:57,132 --> 01:16:59,632

dark that he regretted doing

:

01:16:59,632 --> 01:16:59,882

it.

:

01:17:00,912 --> 01:17:02,322

Actually, taking the role.

:

01:17:02,352 --> 01:17:05,262

Bill: he was 1 of those watch

rewatching this the whole time.

:

01:17:05,262 --> 01:17:06,492

I'm like, I've seen this guy before.

:

01:17:06,492 --> 01:17:08,762

I've seen this guy before

and I could not remember.

:

01:17:08,972 --> 01:17:11,142

And then finally, I was

like, oh, he was on lost.

:

01:17:11,377 --> 01:17:14,277

He was on a couple, he was, I think it

was on like a season or two of Lost.

:

01:17:15,202 --> 01:17:16,791

Katie: Oh, Yeah, you're

:

01:17:16,916 --> 01:17:20,187

Bill: Yeah, and I think, and I think

in some of the episodes he didn't have

:

01:17:20,657 --> 01:17:22,087

the the mustache.

:

01:17:22,087 --> 01:17:23,277

That's why I didn't recognize him.

:

01:17:23,357 --> 01:17:25,247

And he had gray hair at that point.

:

01:17:25,637 --> 01:17:28,837

But yeah, it was driving me nuts

because I'm like, I've seen this guy.

:

01:17:28,837 --> 01:17:29,997

Where have I seen him before?

:

01:17:31,147 --> 01:17:31,377

Jason Masek: He's

:

01:17:31,377 --> 01:17:31,857

definitely

:

01:17:31,857 --> 01:17:33,627

one of the, one of

those, Oh, Hey, it's that

:

01:17:33,627 --> 01:17:33,997

guy.

:

01:17:34,157 --> 01:17:35,047

You, you see him and you're

:

01:17:35,057 --> 01:17:35,237

like,

:

01:17:35,247 --> 01:17:36,797

I know I've seen him before.

:

01:17:36,837 --> 01:17:37,357

And I just

:

01:17:37,717 --> 01:17:40,487

real briefly, not, I'm not going

to go on a long tangent here.

:

01:17:40,487 --> 01:17:41,827

Just going back to JT Walsh.

:

01:17:41,857 --> 01:17:47,757

I have to say, when I think of this

movie, think of JT Walsh before I think of

:

01:17:47,767 --> 01:17:48,447

anyone else,

:

01:17:49,027 --> 01:17:49,437

even though

:

01:17:49,437 --> 01:17:51,547

it's a really, a Kurt Russell vehicle.

:

01:17:51,747 --> 01:17:52,607

I actually,

:

01:17:52,697 --> 01:17:54,757

this is the movie I

think of when I think of

:

01:17:54,757 --> 01:17:55,217

JT.

:

01:17:55,217 --> 01:17:58,807

Well, he's just, he's a powerhouse

and he's just got one of those.

:

01:17:59,997 --> 01:18:01,497

Like Bill says, you just, you see his

:

01:18:03,777 --> 01:18:04,177

but

:

01:18:04,442 --> 01:18:05,202

Katie: Well, I was reading

:

01:18:05,287 --> 01:18:05,567

Jason Masek: at what he

:

01:18:05,677 --> 01:18:07,117

Bill: And that's, yeah, as a compliment.

:

01:18:07,877 --> 01:18:08,377

Jason Masek: Yeah, yeah,

:

01:18:08,377 --> 01:18:09,007

absolutely.

:

01:18:10,202 --> 01:18:15,732

Katie: to that point, both Kurt Russell

and JT Walsh actually recommend so there

:

01:18:15,732 --> 01:18:21,032

was, they cut down their dialogue by a

lot because both actors were saying that

:

01:18:21,041 --> 01:18:25,767

they could act it In their behavior and

their actions, they didn't need to say it.

:

01:18:25,937 --> 01:18:26,287

Jason Masek: Show.

:

01:18:26,287 --> 01:18:26,527

Don't

:

01:18:26,527 --> 01:18:26,977

tell.

:

01:18:27,967 --> 01:18:28,407

Katie: yeah.

:

01:18:29,037 --> 01:18:31,787

Then we have Sheriff Boyd

is played by Rex Lynn.

:

01:18:32,137 --> 01:18:34,357

He is most, he played Travers in

:

01:18:34,666 --> 01:18:35,927

Bill: Yep, That's what I remember.

:

01:18:35,967 --> 01:18:36,297

Yeah,

:

01:18:36,757 --> 01:18:37,777

I couldn't think of anything else.

:

01:18:37,777 --> 01:18:38,957

He was in besides cliffhanger.

:

01:18:38,957 --> 01:18:40,327

I'm like the cliffhanger guy

:

01:18:42,282 --> 01:18:45,022

Katie: Then I'm going to,

Moira Sinise, just quickly.

:

01:18:45,022 --> 01:18:46,422

She has a very small role in this.

:

01:18:46,422 --> 01:18:47,692

She plays Red's wife.

:

01:18:47,702 --> 01:18:49,362

She's really only in it at the end.

:

01:18:49,362 --> 01:18:51,412

And the reason I'm bringing her

up is because we just covered

:

01:18:51,412 --> 01:18:54,372

her in, the Tall Tale episode.

:

01:18:54,452 --> 01:18:54,632

She

:

01:18:54,632 --> 01:18:56,452

was in Tall Tale with Patrick Swayze

:

01:18:56,927 --> 01:18:57,527

Bill: Okay.

:

01:18:57,702 --> 01:18:58,152

Katie: she's

:

01:18:58,152 --> 01:18:59,642

Gary Sinise's wife.

:

01:19:00,717 --> 01:19:00,897

Bill: Oh,

:

01:19:00,897 --> 01:19:01,297

wow.

:

01:19:01,347 --> 01:19:01,597

Jason Masek: that

:

01:19:01,732 --> 01:19:02,312

Katie: And,

:

01:19:02,497 --> 01:19:03,737

Bill: Yeah, I didn't recognize her at all.

:

01:19:03,737 --> 01:19:04,817

So no, that's good.

:

01:19:07,052 --> 01:19:07,442

Katie: Jack

:

01:19:07,442 --> 01:19:09,602

McGee is the bartender slash owner of the

:

01:19:09,857 --> 01:19:10,347

Bill: Yep.

:

01:19:11,067 --> 01:19:11,227

Katie: And

:

01:19:11,237 --> 01:19:15,877

he's also one of those guys that

he's in just tons of stuff, but we

:

01:19:15,877 --> 01:19:16,527

talked about him.

:

01:19:16,567 --> 01:19:17,947

He was also in

:

01:19:18,047 --> 01:19:19,327

Backdraft with Kurt.

:

01:19:19,847 --> 01:19:20,166

Jason Masek: So

:

01:19:20,387 --> 01:19:23,127

I love seeing Jack McGee.

:

01:19:23,277 --> 01:19:30,207

And on our podcast, we covered a

niche sci fi movie called The Hidden.

:

01:19:30,217 --> 01:19:31,127

One of my favorite.

:

01:19:31,147 --> 01:19:33,747

I forced Bill Bant in doing that movie.

:

01:19:34,047 --> 01:19:37,137

And so one of our segments we

call, Hey, it's that actor.

:

01:19:37,857 --> 01:19:40,307

And my choice for The Hidden

:

01:19:40,677 --> 01:19:41,647

was Jack

:

01:19:41,677 --> 01:19:42,207

McGee,

:

01:19:42,527 --> 01:19:45,217

who played bartender in

:

01:19:45,217 --> 01:19:47,107

that movie, who also is

:

01:19:47,497 --> 01:19:49,647

the bartender in this breakdown.

:

01:19:49,647 --> 01:19:50,567

So Jack McGee

:

01:19:50,567 --> 01:19:50,997

is great.

:

01:19:52,237 --> 01:19:52,567

all right.

:

01:19:52,567 --> 01:19:58,867

Well, you guys, if you have not seen

breakdown, or if it's been 25 years,

:

01:19:59,637 --> 01:20:04,977

it is about a man that searches for

his missing wife after their car breaks

:

01:20:04,977 --> 01:20:06,737

down in the middle of the desert.

:

01:20:07,107 --> 01:20:11,107

So, they are driving across

country from Massachusetts to

:

01:20:11,147 --> 01:20:14,547

San Diego for a new job and.

:

01:20:15,291 --> 01:20:16,552

That's where we open.

:

01:20:16,672 --> 01:20:21,162

We get a beautiful opening shot of

the desert landscape and the intermix,

:

01:20:21,172 --> 01:20:23,392

the credits, I really thought this,

I'm curious what you guys think.

:

01:20:23,402 --> 01:20:25,352

I thought it was pretty cool.

:

01:20:26,062 --> 01:20:28,502

Intermixed with the opening

credits and there's all these

:

01:20:28,512 --> 01:20:31,302

lines, like on a black screen.

:

01:20:31,602 --> 01:20:38,452

And then we learn then that those

lines are the highway lines on a map.

:

01:20:38,652 --> 01:20:39,572

I thought that was kind of cool.

:

01:20:39,652 --> 01:20:40,252

Loved it.

:

01:20:40,432 --> 01:20:41,382

Absolutely loved it.

:

01:20:41,412 --> 01:20:45,782

As soon as the movie began, I, well,

I should preface this by saying I've

:

01:20:45,782 --> 01:20:47,072

always been a fan of this movie.

:

01:20:47,312 --> 01:20:51,972

I'm so glad we were, we chose this

to cover on this podcast today

:

01:20:51,972 --> 01:20:54,172

because I've always enjoyed it.

:

01:20:54,342 --> 01:20:56,942

Not just because of Kurt Russell,

but for a lot of different reasons.

:

01:20:57,142 --> 01:20:59,822

And as soon as the film

started, I was like, hell yeah.

:

01:21:00,207 --> 01:21:01,287

This is how we do it.

:

01:21:01,597 --> 01:21:02,537

Great music.

:

01:21:02,567 --> 01:21:03,666

I'm a fan of bezel.

:

01:21:03,877 --> 01:21:04,107

Pellet

:

01:21:04,107 --> 01:21:04,517

doors.

:

01:21:04,617 --> 01:21:05,677

I always have been,

:

01:21:05,697 --> 01:21:05,897

since

:

01:21:05,916 --> 01:21:08,017

I'm a big collector of movie soundtracks,

:

01:21:08,197 --> 01:21:10,937

robo cop the one.

:

01:21:11,027 --> 01:21:13,827

And that's when I started,

I was like, who's this guy?

:

01:21:14,277 --> 01:21:16,387

I'm going to listen to his

soundtracks from here on in.

:

01:21:16,707 --> 01:21:19,587

And when this film started,

I wasn't, I hadn't recalled.

:

01:21:19,587 --> 01:21:21,687

He did the score for the

film and you're right.

:

01:21:21,687 --> 01:21:25,297

The opening credits start and it's,

there's this great sort of drum beat

:

01:21:25,307 --> 01:21:28,097

in the background and you see the

lines coming in the credits going.

:

01:21:28,097 --> 01:21:30,367

I'm like, I, this is, what?

:

01:21:30,397 --> 01:21:30,947

The music's

:

01:21:30,947 --> 01:21:31,197

great.

:

01:21:31,227 --> 01:21:32,427

It's already intense.

:

01:21:32,697 --> 01:21:33,487

I'm in.

:

01:21:33,687 --> 01:21:34,427

Who's doing this

:

01:21:34,427 --> 01:21:34,767

music?

:

01:21:35,257 --> 01:21:36,927

Great start great start to the movie.

:

01:21:39,287 --> 01:21:40,767

Katie: Overall impressions, Bill.

:

01:21:41,402 --> 01:21:45,142

Bill: I I had not seen this since

it first came out So this is a long

:

01:21:45,142 --> 01:21:49,912

time for for me to watch and I think

what I love about this movie is You

:

01:21:50,637 --> 01:21:52,937

It's a, it's a really simple story.

:

01:21:53,166 --> 01:21:57,087

You don't have, even though it's

like this vast territory, you

:

01:21:57,087 --> 01:21:59,267

don't really have a lot of actors.

:

01:22:00,107 --> 01:22:06,047

So I always love movies that can break

things down very simplistic and really is.

:

01:22:06,047 --> 01:22:10,912

It's, it's a, Couple and the wife

gets taken and the husband has to

:

01:22:10,912 --> 01:22:12,922

find, and it's not super complicated.

:

01:22:12,932 --> 01:22:16,152

He doesn't have to go through 15

States to figure this all out.

:

01:22:16,291 --> 01:22:18,172

It's just basically four bad guys.

:

01:22:18,362 --> 01:22:21,852

But the whole time you're watching this

movie, like when he goes to Bell's diner,

:

01:22:22,041 --> 01:22:25,062

like the whole time, I'm like, wait,

are all these people in on this too?

:

01:22:25,362 --> 01:22:28,602

Or when he goes to the city, you're like,

wait, are all these people in on this too?

:

01:22:29,437 --> 01:22:33,807

But it really is just the four and

even red's wife has no idea that

:

01:22:33,887 --> 01:22:37,007

any of this stuff is going on and

that's, that's what I just, I just,

:

01:22:38,187 --> 01:22:41,837

and it felt like a story that,

yeah, they spent, I think,

:

01:22:41,837 --> 01:22:44,037

maybe 20 million on it and it

:

01:22:44,037 --> 01:22:44,847

was like, Yeah, all

:

01:22:45,007 --> 01:22:45,587

Katie: 36

:

01:22:45,907 --> 01:22:46,657

Bill: Oh, they, okay.

:

01:22:46,967 --> 01:22:47,817

Katie: 36 million.

:

01:22:48,017 --> 01:22:49,187

It grossed only 50,

:

01:22:49,497 --> 01:22:49,967

Bill: Right.

:

01:22:50,437 --> 01:22:50,997

Okay.

:

01:22:51,107 --> 01:22:52,787

Katie: then it became

more popular on video, I

:

01:22:52,907 --> 01:22:53,447

Bill: Yeah.

:

01:22:53,587 --> 01:23:00,916

So it's one of those, you don't really

know what to expect audience wise, but it

:

01:23:01,097 --> 01:23:04,337

just grips you right from the beginning

because you you know, because Kurt

:

01:23:04,337 --> 01:23:09,107

Russell, you feel for him and to see him

play the every man instead of the anti

:

01:23:09,107 --> 01:23:11,927

hero that he was doing a lot in the 80s.

:

01:23:12,392 --> 01:23:12,541

Katie: Mm

:

01:23:12,927 --> 01:23:14,087

Bill: Yeah, he just pulled it off.

:

01:23:14,087 --> 01:23:14,387

Great.

:

01:23:14,407 --> 01:23:14,787

And just,

:

01:23:15,477 --> 01:23:17,937

and you just had the

perfect villain in JT walls.

:

01:23:18,207 --> 01:23:21,117

So you just had some great

ingredients, simple story, some

:

01:23:21,137 --> 01:23:25,787

just great actors didn't need to

use a whole bunch of sets for this.

:

01:23:26,387 --> 01:23:28,807

And, it was just, I don't know,

just overall, it's just fun.

:

01:23:28,807 --> 01:23:31,337

For me just to go back

and watch this again.

:

01:23:31,357 --> 01:23:32,617

It was, it's been way too long.

:

01:23:34,032 --> 01:23:38,541

Jason Masek: Yeah, you said it

man, and is a tight package.

:

01:23:38,652 --> 01:23:40,332

I wish we got more movies like this.

:

01:23:40,352 --> 01:23:46,192

It's so smart It's really well

written and I'm glad that both Kurt

:

01:23:46,192 --> 01:23:47,942

Russell and JT Walsh said less is

:

01:23:47,942 --> 01:23:49,472

more We don't need the dialogue.

:

01:23:49,502 --> 01:23:49,682

Let's

:

01:23:49,692 --> 01:23:50,222

trim it down.

:

01:23:50,232 --> 01:23:51,092

Let's just show

:

01:23:51,892 --> 01:23:56,137

we're feeling And they kill it because

they're such, they're just wonderful

:

01:23:56,147 --> 01:23:56,777

performers.

:

01:23:57,916 --> 01:23:59,727

what a great premise.

:

01:24:00,582 --> 01:24:00,972

You're

:

01:24:01,022 --> 01:24:01,692

in from

:

01:24:01,702 --> 01:24:01,732

the

:

01:24:01,742 --> 01:24:08,802

get, it is scary, it's frightening,

and anyone of us that's driven across

:

01:24:08,802 --> 01:24:10,672

country has had these thoughts.

:

01:24:10,712 --> 01:24:14,932

This is a classic, what would I do

if I were in this scenario, kind of

:

01:24:14,932 --> 01:24:15,332

movie.

:

01:24:16,082 --> 01:24:16,612

especially in

:

01:24:16,612 --> 01:24:21,291

that time when you have no, the cell

network isn't much, if anything, he

:

01:24:21,302 --> 01:24:24,662

does have a cell phone technically,

but it's an old school phone.

:

01:24:25,227 --> 01:24:29,477

It's just not the same and are

stranded in the middle of nowhere.

:

01:24:29,477 --> 01:24:30,527

Even cell phones today.

:

01:24:30,527 --> 01:24:32,166

A lot of the time you

don't have the signal.

:

01:24:32,177 --> 01:24:33,447

What do you do?

:

01:24:33,447 --> 01:24:34,916

It's an impossible situation.

:

01:24:34,947 --> 01:24:41,857

It is frightening to the core and

Kurt Russell sells the hell out of it.

:

01:24:42,237 --> 01:24:44,517

This movie, you take out the credits.

:

01:24:44,807 --> 01:24:46,567

It's well under an hour and

:

01:24:46,567 --> 01:24:47,447

29 minutes,

:

01:24:48,337 --> 01:24:48,677

and

:

01:24:48,727 --> 01:24:50,657

it's a rollercoaster ride.

:

01:24:52,482 --> 01:24:58,462

Katie: So, you guys listening or watching,

so we get their, their car breaks

:

01:24:58,462 --> 01:25:04,552

down and here comes a, their, what I

found wild about this is that they're.

:

01:25:05,072 --> 01:25:08,112

Calm and jovial about the fact

that they're stranded they're

:

01:25:08,112 --> 01:25:12,052

joking with each other and stuff

and I'm like, I'd be freaking out.

:

01:25:12,872 --> 01:25:14,492

But then a little while later.

:

01:25:15,512 --> 01:25:17,702

A semi truck comes up behind

them to kind of help push him.

:

01:25:17,712 --> 01:25:21,742

Like he seems like this nice,

friendly, helpful trucker, and he

:

01:25:21,742 --> 01:25:23,552

offers them a ride to the next town.

:

01:25:23,922 --> 01:25:26,822

And so that's to your point,

Jason, though, what would you do?

:

01:25:27,582 --> 01:25:33,082

And what they do is Kurt stays with the

car because it's a brand new car and

:

01:25:33,082 --> 01:25:35,562

they make a big deal about this red.

:

01:25:35,752 --> 01:25:38,262

It's a red Jeep Grand Cherokee, but they

:

01:25:38,262 --> 01:25:40,791

really make it seem like

it's like a rich person

:

01:25:40,791 --> 01:25:42,532

car, which I don't know.

:

01:25:43,122 --> 01:25:47,382

So the wife goes and he stays,

he's there's a pay phone 5 minutes

:

01:25:47,382 --> 01:25:48,892

from here, 5 miles from here.

:

01:25:49,172 --> 01:25:51,472

We'll call a tow truck and he's great.

:

01:25:51,482 --> 01:25:52,082

You do that.

:

01:25:52,082 --> 01:25:53,352

I'll stay here with the car.

:

01:25:54,132 --> 01:25:55,422

That's what happens in the movie.

:

01:25:55,422 --> 01:25:55,437

Okay.

:

01:25:56,107 --> 01:25:57,557

What would you guys

:

01:25:57,557 --> 01:25:58,957

do in This scenario?

:

01:25:58,957 --> 01:26:03,087

Oh

:

01:26:03,252 --> 01:26:07,062

Bill: something similar happen to me

when I was with the dolphins and we

:

01:26:07,062 --> 01:26:10,102

would go around to these schools and do

like this junior training camp thing.

:

01:26:10,432 --> 01:26:12,722

And we were on, I think we were, Oh,

:

01:26:12,722 --> 01:26:14,832

my God, we were like two

hours away from Miami.

:

01:26:14,842 --> 01:26:18,192

We drove up and then we were

driving back and we blew a tire.

:

01:26:19,202 --> 01:26:22,672

And because it was one of those like

U Haul trucks, there's no spare.

:

01:26:23,592 --> 01:26:25,912

And this is before cell phones.

:

01:26:25,922 --> 01:26:27,762

So we, you know, it was

like the beeper age.

:

01:26:27,762 --> 01:26:30,712

So it was like, crap, we need

to find, first we thought, Hey,

:

01:26:30,712 --> 01:26:33,132

someone's going to pull over when

this giant dolphin struck, I'm just

:

01:26:33,132 --> 01:26:35,352

going to pull over and try for help.

:

01:26:36,732 --> 01:26:41,982

And of course, nothing, no one

would stop by and we were stuck

:

01:26:41,982 --> 01:26:43,252

on the road for 45 minutes.

:

01:26:43,662 --> 01:26:49,172

And then finally, this van pulls up and

the guy's like, Oh, do you guys need help?

:

01:26:49,992 --> 01:26:52,382

And of course this movie's in the

back of my head, like, I don't

:

01:26:52,382 --> 01:26:53,222

want to get in the car with them.

:

01:26:53,842 --> 01:26:57,622

So eventually the guy I was with, he,

cause he was bigger and stronger than me.

:

01:26:57,832 --> 01:26:59,822

He went in and he drove off.

:

01:26:59,852 --> 01:27:01,842

And in the back of my mind, I'm

like, am I going to see him again?

:

01:27:02,482 --> 01:27:03,312

Am I going to see him again?

:

01:27:03,416 --> 01:27:04,027

Katie: my God.

:

01:27:04,027 --> 01:27:06,497

Oh

:

01:27:06,647 --> 01:27:10,537

Bill: is because they wanted money

because they were just like a bunch

:

01:27:10,537 --> 01:27:14,847

of like hippie who are just traveling

the thing, and they need a gas money.

:

01:27:15,157 --> 01:27:17,677

So that's why they kind of

picked this up and helped us.

:

01:27:17,887 --> 01:27:22,062

And then eventually this you

know, Pickup truck finally pulls

:

01:27:22,222 --> 01:27:24,262

the guy has a tire throws it on.

:

01:27:24,272 --> 01:27:26,552

And he's yeah, I think your

friend's at the gas station.

:

01:27:26,802 --> 01:27:30,242

And then I got in, you know, in the

car and drove to the local gas station.

:

01:27:30,472 --> 01:27:32,892

And my friend was like literally

cheering that he saw me cause

:

01:27:32,892 --> 01:27:33,722

he thought the same thing.

:

01:27:33,722 --> 01:27:35,922

He's like, I didn't think I was

going to see you again either.

:

01:27:36,362 --> 01:27:36,832

So.

:

01:27:37,547 --> 01:27:38,277

Katie: my God.

:

01:27:38,557 --> 01:27:40,397

Bill: Yeah, it's it.

:

01:27:40,407 --> 01:27:41,337

Yeah, it's a day.

:

01:27:41,557 --> 01:27:42,807

I will never forget.

:

01:27:42,807 --> 01:27:45,707

But yeah, that was kind of like

my breakdown moment And luckily

:

01:27:45,707 --> 01:27:49,697

like we we turned out okay,

but yeah watching this movie.

:

01:27:49,697 --> 01:27:52,717

I was thinking like, oh if this was

me and my wife Yeah, we we both would

:

01:27:52,717 --> 01:27:56,897

have been done for but you would

think you would think nice people.

:

01:27:56,987 --> 01:27:58,227

Katie: you have both gone?

:

01:27:58,477 --> 01:27:59,427

Well, what would you have done?

:

01:27:59,427 --> 01:28:03,027

Would you have both gone with

him or, or would you both stayed

:

01:28:03,027 --> 01:28:05,377

with the car or would,

you know what would you

:

01:28:05,377 --> 01:28:05,447

have

:

01:28:05,527 --> 01:28:06,087

Bill: know

:

01:28:06,217 --> 01:28:06,857

Katie: you and your wife?

:

01:28:08,107 --> 01:28:10,297

Bill: I think we would have split up too.

:

01:28:11,277 --> 01:28:12,037

Katie: Really?

:

01:28:12,097 --> 01:28:12,737

Bill: Yeah,

:

01:28:13,747 --> 01:28:17,177

I'll have to ask her about this now

Because I don't think we both would have

:

01:28:17,177 --> 01:28:17,537

went.

:

01:28:17,617 --> 01:28:18,327

Katie: you, Jason?

:

01:28:19,997 --> 01:28:22,607

Jason Masek: I would like to

think I would go with her.

:

01:28:22,627 --> 01:28:23,737

I would have to go with her.

:

01:28:23,827 --> 01:28:29,467

I think in this particular scenario,

I had my head about me and just looked

:

01:28:29,467 --> 01:28:35,137

at all the factors, what is of most

value, my wife first and foremost

:

01:28:35,147 --> 01:28:38,157

has to be my priority, the car.

:

01:28:38,347 --> 01:28:39,597

It's just a material thing.

:

01:28:39,637 --> 01:28:43,277

I mean, I say that, but if

I had this fancy red grand

:

01:28:43,347 --> 01:28:44,467

Cherokee, Right.

:

01:28:44,517 --> 01:28:44,777

I'd

:

01:28:44,967 --> 01:28:45,597

Katie: Yeah.

:

01:28:45,597 --> 01:28:46,267

Like it's new.

:

01:28:46,267 --> 01:28:49,197

They make a point of saying it's

like a new car and it's really

:

01:28:49,342 --> 01:28:50,992

Jason Masek: but it's still

the middle of the desert.

:

01:28:51,022 --> 01:28:53,702

Is somebody gonna just drive

along and steal my car?

:

01:28:53,742 --> 01:28:54,892

I don't think so.

:

01:28:54,992 --> 01:28:57,342

I'm gonna risk leaving the car behind.

:

01:28:57,362 --> 01:28:59,322

Just stay with my wife.

:

01:28:59,322 --> 01:29:01,132

Make sure we get to someplace safe.

:

01:29:01,827 --> 01:29:08,157

Uh, I don't want to let her out of my

sight, to say that she isn't capable.

:

01:29:08,267 --> 01:29:09,767

Not that I don't trust her.

:

01:29:10,647 --> 01:29:16,067

just that there's too many unknowns, too

many unknowns in the middle of nowhere.

:

01:29:17,187 --> 01:29:19,077

I don't, I wouldn't risk

it, but that's, you know,

:

01:29:20,467 --> 01:29:22,337

maybe I'm just saying that

cause I know what has ends up

:

01:29:22,337 --> 01:29:22,727

happening.

:

01:29:23,027 --> 01:29:23,407

Bill: Right.

:

01:29:23,457 --> 01:29:23,617

I

:

01:29:23,717 --> 01:29:24,057

Katie: Yeah.

:

01:29:24,057 --> 01:29:25,067

it's, it's easy to

:

01:29:25,097 --> 01:29:29,007

say when you know that

he, he's a spoiler alert.

:

01:29:29,027 --> 01:29:29,407

He's not a

:

01:29:29,407 --> 01:29:30,007

good guy.

:

01:29:30,416 --> 01:29:30,717

Jason Masek: Yeah.

:

01:29:30,717 --> 01:29:31,017

Mr.

:

01:29:31,017 --> 01:29:31,267

Truck

:

01:29:31,267 --> 01:29:31,677

driver,

:

01:29:31,747 --> 01:29:32,767

red bar.

:

01:29:35,927 --> 01:29:40,627

Katie: I do really enjoy

the callback and the payoff

:

01:29:40,657 --> 01:29:41,577

of the donuts.

:

01:29:42,237 --> 01:29:42,717

Jason Masek: Oh yeah.

:

01:29:42,817 --> 01:29:45,197

Katie: So, so the, they.

:

01:29:45,597 --> 01:29:51,977

They stopped there at a gas station and

we see an unattended jeep with a hood open

:

01:29:51,977 --> 01:29:55,797

and that does come into play later, but

they're like, it just in the gas station.

:

01:29:55,807 --> 01:29:59,666

They're just maybe a little

naive people that go into the gas

:

01:29:59,666 --> 01:30:03,067

station, get snacks and it's like

those gas station, a pack of.

:

01:30:03,877 --> 01:30:09,527

Powdered sugar donuts, and there's

whoever made the donuts has a contest

:

01:30:10,057 --> 01:30:13,627

if I can't even remember what the

contest was, but you could win 90, 000

:

01:30:13,627 --> 01:30:15,357

dollars of that specific

:

01:30:15,477 --> 01:30:16,677

Bill: Or 90, 000 donuts.

:

01:30:16,767 --> 01:30:17,487

Katie: call back,

:

01:30:18,137 --> 01:30:19,357

yes, or 90, 000 donuts.

:

01:30:19,377 --> 01:30:19,707

Yes.

:

01:30:20,117 --> 01:30:22,247

So she's reading this to

them as they're in the car.

:

01:30:22,257 --> 01:30:24,067

And then that's called back.

:

01:30:27,443 --> 01:30:31,644

The bad guys are like, oh, your wife

told us a very specific amount of

:

01:30:31,644 --> 01:30:35,674

money that you have in some account

and Kurt's like, I, I don't, I don't

:

01:30:35,674 --> 01:30:36,574

know what you're talking about.

:

01:30:36,814 --> 01:30:40,014

And then he remembers

that and he says, 90, 000

:

01:30:40,014 --> 01:30:40,324

to

:

01:30:42,564 --> 01:30:45,004

Bill: I just remember the scene

where she's showing the snacks.

:

01:30:45,004 --> 01:30:47,134

I'm like, oh my god, you

picked some of the worst stuff.

:

01:30:47,324 --> 01:30:49,824

I would not eat that at that age.

:

01:30:49,964 --> 01:30:53,014

That, the teenager in me would have

ate that stuff, but not, not, Yeah.

:

01:30:53,014 --> 01:30:54,574

not adult me, That's for sure.

:

01:30:54,874 --> 01:30:55,244

But

:

01:30:55,394 --> 01:30:56,534

Katie: I think I would, I

:

01:30:56,773 --> 01:30:57,234

Bill: really?

:

01:30:57,244 --> 01:30:59,134

Yeah, I, I, I couldn't

touch that stuff now.

:

01:30:59,523 --> 01:31:02,514

But yeah, it's good that they,

you know, they, they specify that.

:

01:31:02,514 --> 01:31:05,074

And then the opening scene about it was

like, Oh, what would you do with 90,

:

01:31:05,074 --> 01:31:10,464

000 doughnuts, you know, and then when

his car goes into the river and then

:

01:31:10,474 --> 01:31:14,584

we have another shot of the doughnuts

and it's like, okay, we're showing this

:

01:31:14,644 --> 01:31:18,454

to you again, because it's going to

come back into play later in the movie.

:

01:31:18,474 --> 01:31:21,354

And then even me in the

trunk, I'm thinking, no, I

:

01:31:21,354 --> 01:31:22,254

would've picked up on that.

:

01:31:22,254 --> 01:31:23,684

I w I would've been dead right there.

:

01:31:24,004 --> 01:31:27,394

Dummy me, but yeah, that that

was very Smart on her part.

:

01:31:27,443 --> 01:31:31,324

Katie: Though, I think the only

reason it was very smart and the

:

01:31:31,324 --> 01:31:36,324

reason that he did pick up on it was

because she said to the bad guys, my

:

01:31:36,324 --> 01:31:38,134

husband is like some sort of

:

01:31:38,574 --> 01:31:38,954

owns a

:

01:31:39,109 --> 01:31:39,869

Bill: Like the donut

:

01:31:39,869 --> 01:31:40,729

King or something.

:

01:31:40,729 --> 01:31:41,099

Yeah.

:

01:31:42,144 --> 01:31:42,514

Katie: yeah.

:

01:31:42,514 --> 01:31:43,754

And so he's like, oh,

:

01:31:44,624 --> 01:31:45,614

yeah, smart.

:

01:31:46,568 --> 01:31:49,599

Bill: Well, I'm already the dumb one

that sent my wife off to begin with.

:

01:31:49,599 --> 01:31:52,739

So I probably wouldn't, I've been dumb

enough to not pick up on the clue.

:

01:31:54,174 --> 01:31:54,844

Katie: Kurt Russell

:

01:31:54,844 --> 01:31:55,634

did it too.

:

01:31:56,273 --> 01:31:57,904

Have you guys seen the movie?

:

01:31:57,934 --> 01:31:59,434

It comes out in 98.

:

01:31:59,684 --> 01:32:01,974

It's called Black Dog with Patrick Swayze.

:

01:32:01,994 --> 01:32:03,224

I recently did an episode

:

01:32:03,304 --> 01:32:04,534

Jason Masek: I, I still have

:

01:32:04,534 --> 01:32:04,834

never

:

01:32:04,844 --> 01:32:05,754

Katie: No one saw it.

:

01:32:06,384 --> 01:32:07,784

No one saw this movie.

:

01:32:08,144 --> 01:32:08,704

It's actually

:

01:32:08,869 --> 01:32:10,139

Bill: Is he a truck driver in that one?

:

01:32:10,364 --> 01:32:10,604

Katie: I would

:

01:32:11,714 --> 01:32:16,484

Yes, there's a lot of parallels

with there's a guy named

:

01:32:16,504 --> 01:32:17,784

Earl, played by Randy Travis.

:

01:32:18,404 --> 01:32:19,834

In that, in Black Dog.

:

01:32:20,564 --> 01:32:24,374

Patrick Swayze's, so there's

truck driving, highway chase

:

01:32:24,974 --> 01:32:26,824

scenes in both movies.

:

01:32:27,284 --> 01:32:27,704

There's a lot

:

01:32:27,704 --> 01:32:29,044

of, yeah, I just kept thinking of,

:

01:32:29,044 --> 01:32:29,544

Black Dog.

:

01:32:30,289 --> 01:32:31,019

Bill: think I've seen it.

:

01:32:31,019 --> 01:32:32,449

but I don't remember it at all.

:

01:32:32,549 --> 01:32:33,659

outside of the fact this

:

01:32:33,844 --> 01:32:35,654

Katie: I don't think

very many people saw it.

:

01:32:36,984 --> 01:32:37,804

What were some other

:

01:32:37,804 --> 01:32:38,454

scenes that

:

01:32:38,454 --> 01:32:39,294

really stood out to

:

01:32:39,294 --> 01:32:39,824

you guys?

:

01:32:40,209 --> 01:32:41,279

Bill: Oh, the.

:

01:32:41,594 --> 01:32:42,504

Best scene.

:

01:32:42,974 --> 01:32:43,674

I'm sorry, Jason.

:

01:32:43,674 --> 01:32:46,164

I'm gonna step on your scene too is when

:

01:32:46,674 --> 01:32:50,124

is when Kurt Russell is

Jeff tracks down the truck

:

01:32:50,943 --> 01:32:54,174

and he runs the JT Walsh and you

know, he's trying to get in the

:

01:32:54,174 --> 01:32:55,254

pull over trying to get a pull over.

:

01:32:55,254 --> 01:32:55,834

He won't pull over.

:

01:32:55,834 --> 01:32:57,854

And then he finally cuts him off.

:

01:32:58,404 --> 01:33:01,354

And JT Walsh comes out and

he's like, where's my wife?

:

01:33:01,454 --> 01:33:02,364

He's like, what are you talking about?

:

01:33:02,364 --> 01:33:02,954

I've never.

:

01:33:03,494 --> 01:33:08,104

And you're just like, Oh,

what the hell is going on?

:

01:33:09,084 --> 01:33:10,604

Cause you're like, wait,

is that a twin brother?

:

01:33:10,644 --> 01:33:12,724

Is that, is that what

they're trying to play here?

:

01:33:14,054 --> 01:33:17,529

And then the longer the scene

gets into, you're just like, Oh

:

01:33:17,529 --> 01:33:20,949

my God, this is not good at all.

:

01:33:20,949 --> 01:33:23,589

It's just the two of them

are just amazing in that.

:

01:33:23,589 --> 01:33:27,219

And then the fact that the trooper comes

and they flag him down and the, and

:

01:33:27,224 --> 01:33:30,099

he's like, I, I'm looking the, you know,

through the car, and then you're thinking,

:

01:33:30,129 --> 01:33:34,709

okay, maybe Kurt Russell will find a

clue when he goes in to see something

:

01:33:34,714 --> 01:33:38,079

that, you know, maybe the officer

didn't see that that would, but the

:

01:33:38,079 --> 01:33:42,818

fact that then he drives away and you're

like, what, what is he gonna do now?

:

01:33:42,818 --> 01:33:43,509

What is he gonna do now?

:

01:33:43,689 --> 01:33:44,769

That scene is just great.

:

01:33:44,919 --> 01:33:46,329

That's just the best to me.

:

01:33:46,739 --> 01:33:47,219

Super

:

01:33:47,514 --> 01:33:49,134

Katie: Where, he's like,

what are you doing?

:

01:33:49,514 --> 01:33:52,193

Like, he realizes that he's

playing with playing with him.

:

01:33:52,193 --> 01:33:54,389

And Kurt's like, What are you doing?

:

01:33:54,389 --> 01:33:55,189

Where's Amy?

:

01:33:55,259 --> 01:33:55,719

Yeah,

:

01:33:55,979 --> 01:33:56,148

it's

:

01:33:56,193 --> 01:33:59,854

Jason Masek: Every, every step

of the way I am going, what would

:

01:33:59,854 --> 01:34:01,844

I do if I were in his shoes?

:

01:34:02,054 --> 01:34:04,794

And it's pretty much exactly

what Kurt Russell does.

:

01:34:04,854 --> 01:34:07,424

It's like, you are at your wit's end here.

:

01:34:07,754 --> 01:34:11,353

It's every situation is so

confounding and frightful.

:

01:34:12,084 --> 01:34:18,244

And you just, your mind is just going

a million miles an hour at all times.

:

01:34:18,244 --> 01:34:19,664

I have to find my wife.

:

01:34:19,684 --> 01:34:22,134

I have to, how am I going

to put this together?

:

01:34:22,134 --> 01:34:24,773

These pieces of the puzzle,

because I have no resources.

:

01:34:25,034 --> 01:34:26,074

I've got nothing.

:

01:34:26,894 --> 01:34:32,884

after that great, great scene, call Bill

Bant on calling, cause that's JT Walsh.

:

01:34:33,114 --> 01:34:35,693

When he just puts on that blank

stare, like I don't know you

:

01:34:35,754 --> 01:34:36,853

and what are you going to do?

:

01:34:37,259 --> 01:34:38,889

Well, how do you tell,

how do you prove it?

:

01:34:39,068 --> 01:34:39,559

You've got nothing.

:

01:34:39,699 --> 01:34:43,039

And he goes back to Bell's diner

and that's where I'm going.

:

01:34:43,259 --> 01:34:44,259

You're screwed, pal.

:

01:34:44,289 --> 01:34:45,669

Your wife is gone.

:

01:34:45,919 --> 01:34:46,809

You've got nothing.

:

01:34:47,089 --> 01:34:48,699

You can't trace her cell phone.

:

01:34:48,719 --> 01:34:51,359

Even if you could, if she's not

picking up, she's not calling you back.

:

01:34:51,439 --> 01:34:51,939

She's gone.

:

01:34:52,799 --> 01:34:53,189

gone.

:

01:34:53,279 --> 01:34:54,859

Where do you even begin?

:

01:34:54,869 --> 01:34:59,148

And he tries every Avenue, but they're

not really proving fruitful until

:

01:34:59,148 --> 01:35:02,898

of course the bad guys, starting

with Billy, lead them down a path.

:

01:35:03,204 --> 01:35:07,564

And then we understand, Oh, this is

a kidnapping slash hostage ransom

:

01:35:07,574 --> 01:35:11,704

situation, and I have some questions

plot wise, as far as why didn't they

:

01:35:11,704 --> 01:35:15,574

take Kurt Russell earlier and such,

but still plays out wonderfully.

:

01:35:15,574 --> 01:35:20,344

And what I'll call out is

because this movie is intense.

:

01:35:21,344 --> 01:35:24,574

It's intense to Kurt Russell's acting.

:

01:35:24,734 --> 01:35:28,494

He does this thing like what

Harrison Ford is one of my favorite.

:

01:35:28,634 --> 01:35:31,014

And I always say Harrison Ford

does action the best because

:

01:35:31,014 --> 01:35:32,374

he has an intensity about him.

:

01:35:32,384 --> 01:35:35,554

There's something that takes over

his face when he's in an action

:

01:35:35,574 --> 01:35:38,994

scene and there's some way he has

the scowl and you're like, Oh my God.

:

01:35:38,994 --> 01:35:39,514

He's serious.

:

01:35:39,514 --> 01:35:40,714

Don't mess with Harrison Ford.

:

01:35:41,044 --> 01:35:42,724

Kurt Russell has a thing too.

:

01:35:43,044 --> 01:35:47,924

And in this scenario, it's not so

much out of, I have to take charge.

:

01:35:47,934 --> 01:35:49,554

Sometimes it's a mixture of fear.

:

01:35:50,704 --> 01:35:53,514

intense, his cheeks shake, his cheeks

:

01:35:53,514 --> 01:35:54,074

vibrate.

:

01:35:54,124 --> 01:35:56,594

He does this thing where

his whole body is shaking.

:

01:35:56,744 --> 01:35:57,714

He's vibrating.

:

01:35:57,714 --> 01:36:00,064

And it's Ooh, God, Kurt Russell's in it.

:

01:36:00,294 --> 01:36:03,214

He's living this I'm frightened for him.

:

01:36:03,214 --> 01:36:04,284

I'm frightened with him.

:

01:36:04,734 --> 01:36:08,034

And towards the end, when he finally.

:

01:36:08,449 --> 01:36:09,459

This movie's brutal,

:

01:36:09,619 --> 01:36:10,249

by the way.

:

01:36:10,439 --> 01:36:11,269

The treatment

:

01:36:11,349 --> 01:36:12,169

of the wife?

:

01:36:12,849 --> 01:36:14,839

it reminds me of another movie

called the Vanishing, which I

:

01:36:14,839 --> 01:36:15,978

don't even like to think about.

:

01:36:16,228 --> 01:36:18,959

Which is really scary about

another wife getting kidnapped.

:

01:36:19,029 --> 01:36:19,919

That's a different

:

01:36:19,919 --> 01:36:20,219

movie.

:

01:36:20,279 --> 01:36:20,559

But,

:

01:36:21,609 --> 01:36:22,199

Katie: I feel like I've seen

:

01:36:22,249 --> 01:36:22,568

Jason Masek: Yeah,

:

01:36:22,568 --> 01:36:25,318

that's Kiefer Sutherland, Sandra

Bullock, and Jeff Bridges.

:

01:36:25,349 --> 01:36:27,109

Anyway, it's really weird and scary.

:

01:36:27,148 --> 01:36:35,429

So this, Kathleen Quinlan as

Amy, she gets kidnapped and she's

:

01:36:35,429 --> 01:36:36,999

wrapped in some sort of burlap

:

01:36:37,818 --> 01:36:38,989

think she's dead.

:

01:36:39,389 --> 01:36:39,719

As she's

:

01:36:39,789 --> 01:36:40,449

suffocated.

:

01:36:40,769 --> 01:36:41,059

Yeah.

:

01:36:41,079 --> 01:36:41,769

that's like, and

:

01:36:41,769 --> 01:36:42,049

she's

:

01:36:42,059 --> 01:36:46,539

not dead and then they throw her

into a freezer, but obviously

:

01:36:46,629 --> 01:36:50,259

spoiler alert, spoiler alert, spoiler

alert, Kurt Russell gets the, you

:

01:36:50,259 --> 01:36:52,929

know, upper hand and rescues her.

:

01:36:52,939 --> 01:36:54,139

And I just want to point out the scene.

:

01:36:54,139 --> 01:36:59,568

Once they make their escape from Red's

barn, that entire chase sequence is

:

01:37:01,249 --> 01:37:01,669

because

:

01:37:01,679 --> 01:37:02,839

they're in a trailer.

:

01:37:03,339 --> 01:37:03,909

And

:

01:37:03,959 --> 01:37:05,759

they're trying to commandeer this truck.

:

01:37:05,759 --> 01:37:07,359

They got to find the keys for the truck.

:

01:37:07,359 --> 01:37:10,379

And then here comes red and

his semi crashes through the

:

01:37:10,379 --> 01:37:11,809

trailer, narrowly missing them.

:

01:37:12,068 --> 01:37:15,839

And then there's the sequence

on the road when Billy's in his

:

01:37:15,839 --> 01:37:18,499

Camaro and reds in his truck.

:

01:37:18,559 --> 01:37:20,189

And I think is it who's his other

:

01:37:20,239 --> 01:37:21,534

Al is like in.

:

01:37:22,394 --> 01:37:24,144

who's already been shot

at this point is in

:

01:37:24,144 --> 01:37:29,184

another car and they, there's this

triangulation where the three, the two

:

01:37:29,184 --> 01:37:35,574

cars on either side of the truck that

have Jeff and Amy in it and Red's behind

:

01:37:35,574 --> 01:37:37,954

them in the semi and they're crushing him.

:

01:37:38,244 --> 01:37:43,204

They're surrounding him, all three

vehicles surrounding one vehicle racing

:

01:37:43,204 --> 01:37:48,023

down this road, which ends up into this

intense sequence on the bridge, which

:

01:37:48,023 --> 01:37:50,224

is still one of what a great finale.

:

01:37:50,224 --> 01:37:50,284

Finally.

:

01:37:51,969 --> 01:37:56,719

it's just, you can make any, you know,

talk about so many different car chases

:

01:37:56,719 --> 01:38:00,019

and intense sequences, so many different

movies, and you can talk about what's

:

01:38:00,039 --> 01:38:04,459

Steven Spielberg's earliest duel,

right, was truck chasing another car,

:

01:38:04,759 --> 01:38:09,549

but this one is for me, I always, as a

go to, is one of my favorites because

:

01:38:09,568 --> 01:38:11,219

I'm like, I use one of those things.

:

01:38:11,299 --> 01:38:13,289

Oh, you think they're

about to get out of it.

:

01:38:13,289 --> 01:38:14,289

He found his wife.

:

01:38:14,339 --> 01:38:15,349

It is not over.

:

01:38:15,419 --> 01:38:15,959

This movie is

:

01:38:15,978 --> 01:38:17,609

not over when he rescues

:

01:38:17,609 --> 01:38:17,829

his

:

01:38:17,829 --> 01:38:18,329

wife.

:

01:38:18,409 --> 01:38:19,379

They're not even close.

:

01:38:20,228 --> 01:38:20,978

So love

:

01:38:20,978 --> 01:38:21,239

that

:

01:38:21,249 --> 01:38:21,599

final

:

01:38:21,599 --> 01:38:21,839

chase

:

01:38:22,109 --> 01:38:22,549

Katie: out.

:

01:38:23,148 --> 01:38:23,509

Jason Masek: Yeah.

:

01:38:23,699 --> 01:38:23,879

It's

:

01:38:23,879 --> 01:38:24,509

stressful.

:

01:38:24,799 --> 01:38:25,269

Katie: there's,

:

01:38:25,559 --> 01:38:27,599

there's two scenes where Kurt.

:

01:38:28,259 --> 01:38:32,949

As Jeff has to use the most insane

amount of upper body strength

:

01:38:33,829 --> 01:38:36,469

and that stressed me out because

I'm like, I couldn't do that.

:

01:38:36,469 --> 01:38:37,609

I would, I'd be dead.

:

01:38:37,818 --> 01:38:38,568

He climbs.

:

01:38:38,609 --> 01:38:39,409

There's a scene.

:

01:38:39,439 --> 01:38:42,129

I feel like this has happened

in other movies where he, he

:

01:38:42,179 --> 01:38:44,489

stows away on red's truck.

:

01:38:44,769 --> 01:38:47,349

Leading into the barn on the underside

:

01:38:47,359 --> 01:38:52,709

of the truck and then maneuvers

maneuvers his way up to the cab part.

:

01:38:53,329 --> 01:38:57,269

And then, yeah, Jason, the end

scene, they're dangled over this.

:

01:38:57,739 --> 01:39:02,879

The cab of the semi over a

bridge and he has to like,

:

01:39:03,459 --> 01:39:05,769

pull himself up from dangling.

:

01:39:05,769 --> 01:39:07,789

And I'm like, oh my God.

:

01:39:07,939 --> 01:39:10,839

Jason Masek: better have done your

chin ups and your pull up workouts

:

01:39:10,839 --> 01:39:13,318

in order to pull that off, but

you nailed it, Katie, because.

:

01:39:13,544 --> 01:39:18,114

He does the Indiana Jones sequence on the

truck when he's underneath it crawling

:

01:39:18,114 --> 01:39:20,844

up and around the side of it and onto

when in, you know, in the middle of the

:

01:39:20,844 --> 01:39:22,334

movie or towards the third act there.

:

01:39:22,334 --> 01:39:27,193

But, was, oh God, there was another

sequence I was going to call

:

01:39:27,193 --> 01:39:32,204

out regarding like Indiana Jones

maneuvers, but yeah that he gets to

:

01:39:32,204 --> 01:39:34,704

do his, his action hero bit there.

:

01:39:34,704 --> 01:39:37,454

We get the best of both worlds

with Kurt Russell in this moment.

:

01:39:37,454 --> 01:39:38,864

We're like, okay, okay.

:

01:39:38,864 --> 01:39:39,924

I think he could do this.

:

01:39:40,739 --> 01:39:41,459

Cause he's just an

:

01:39:41,478 --> 01:39:41,989

everyman,

:

01:39:41,999 --> 01:39:43,949

but he's like, it's

:

01:39:43,949 --> 01:39:44,989

still it's Kurt Russell.

:

01:39:45,059 --> 01:39:45,799

I'm going to go with it.

:

01:39:45,909 --> 01:39:46,469

I'll buy it.

:

01:39:47,709 --> 01:39:52,119

Katie: and he's what, 97 that

he, was he like 50 maybe?

:

01:39:52,219 --> 01:39:52,239

So

:

01:39:52,879 --> 01:39:53,109

he was

:

01:39:53,329 --> 01:39:53,529

Jason Masek: Yeah.

:

01:39:54,984 --> 01:39:55,424

be.

:

01:39:56,404 --> 01:39:57,273

Katie: or three.

:

01:39:57,879 --> 01:39:58,409

Bill: Wow.

:

01:39:58,439 --> 01:39:58,809

Yeah.

:

01:39:59,074 --> 01:40:00,094

Katie: So like late

:

01:40:00,379 --> 01:40:00,609

Bill: Yeah.

:

01:40:00,609 --> 01:40:02,139

I was going to say probably looks, yeah.

:

01:40:02,148 --> 01:40:03,409

Mid forties, late forties.

:

01:40:03,869 --> 01:40:06,439

But there's a, there's another

scene I found really chilling.

:

01:40:06,439 --> 01:40:10,359

That almost made my hair stand is

when he goes to the police office, the

:

01:40:10,359 --> 01:40:15,429

report that his wife's missing and He's

given the report and then he goes over

:

01:40:16,449 --> 01:40:19,619

and just sees all those missing posters.

:

01:40:19,909 --> 01:40:22,259

And I just remember

thinking like, Oh my God.

:

01:40:23,324 --> 01:40:27,244

He must realize this is a lot

bigger than just his wife's

:

01:40:27,244 --> 01:40:29,754

like, how big does this run?

:

01:40:30,424 --> 01:40:31,724

And it's just the two officers.

:

01:40:31,734 --> 01:40:33,894

So I'm like, the officers are not

realizing all these people are

:

01:40:33,894 --> 01:40:35,773

getting kidnapped in their area.

:

01:40:35,814 --> 01:40:37,164

It was like, it's gotta be.

:

01:40:37,164 --> 01:40:38,134

something going on.

:

01:40:38,184 --> 01:40:40,824

So That's why, like throughout the

whole rest of the movie, that's why

:

01:40:40,834 --> 01:40:45,103

I always thought like everybody else,

this whole town is in on this and

:

01:40:45,103 --> 01:40:46,034

there's something else sharing the

:

01:40:46,034 --> 01:40:49,874

wealth, but yeah, but just

the way he looks and gets lost

:

01:40:50,244 --> 01:40:52,193

in those Missing posters.

:

01:40:52,224 --> 01:40:53,704

I was just like, Oh my God.

:

01:40:53,874 --> 01:40:54,124

Oh my

:

01:40:54,124 --> 01:40:54,424

God.

:

01:40:54,554 --> 01:40:55,103

This is terrible.

:

01:40:56,404 --> 01:40:59,364

Katie: and then it's confirmed

when we get to the barn that is

:

01:40:59,374 --> 01:41:02,424

filled with the belongings of

:

01:41:02,693 --> 01:41:05,924

maybe hundreds of people that

they've done this to before.

:

01:41:06,353 --> 01:41:09,094

This, it's, so it turns out

it's like a whole network of

:

01:41:09,094 --> 01:41:10,744

like highway robbery robberies.

:

01:41:10,994 --> 01:41:11,773

Jason Masek: Murders.

:

01:41:12,134 --> 01:41:19,144

Katie: Murderers and Billy informs him

he's pretending to be, like, mentally

:

01:41:19,154 --> 01:41:25,154

challenged and informs him that the

police are in on it, but then, I might,

:

01:41:25,864 --> 01:41:27,674

I'm curious to see what you guys think.

:

01:41:28,244 --> 01:41:31,154

He, why does he then

trust the sheriff later?

:

01:41:32,519 --> 01:41:33,919

And the Sheriff's not in on it

:

01:41:33,929 --> 01:41:35,409

because he ends up killing.

:

01:41:35,789 --> 01:41:37,349

He ends up killing Earl.

:

01:41:37,929 --> 01:41:42,089

So was it the deputy or, you

:

01:41:42,164 --> 01:41:42,264

Jason Masek: know

:

01:41:42,264 --> 01:41:44,134

if Billy was just kind

of planting it, like

:

01:41:44,534 --> 01:41:44,794

throwing

:

01:41:44,804 --> 01:41:44,964

him a

:

01:41:44,964 --> 01:41:46,684

little red herring there because

:

01:41:46,714 --> 01:41:46,984

that's

:

01:41:46,984 --> 01:41:47,864

what it feels like.

:

01:41:48,364 --> 01:41:48,844

I don't know.

:

01:41:49,023 --> 01:41:50,094

I, Bill nailed it.

:

01:41:50,144 --> 01:41:53,744

I think you all nailed it here

where it's everybody's a suspect.

:

01:41:53,754 --> 01:41:54,814

Everybody's so suspicious.

:

01:41:54,853 --> 01:41:57,934

It's really smart in the storytelling

where we don't know who to

:

01:41:57,934 --> 01:41:58,443

trust.

:

01:41:58,724 --> 01:41:59,394

So now you're,

:

01:41:59,744 --> 01:42:01,654

who do you even, Oh God,

:

01:42:01,664 --> 01:42:03,044

Jack McKee is the bartender.

:

01:42:03,054 --> 01:42:03,844

Absolutely.

:

01:42:03,864 --> 01:42:05,154

Any of the people sitting in

:

01:42:05,154 --> 01:42:05,844

that diner?

:

01:42:06,084 --> 01:42:06,644

I don't, are they

:

01:42:06,674 --> 01:42:07,554

all like, is

:

01:42:07,574 --> 01:42:08,254

like Bill said, is

:

01:42:11,219 --> 01:42:12,228

Katie: Super sinister.

:

01:42:12,314 --> 01:42:12,574

Bill: Yeah.

:

01:42:12,634 --> 01:42:13,254

Cause yeah.

:

01:42:13,284 --> 01:42:15,714

Cause even the bank teller that

he's dealing with when he starts,

:

01:42:15,714 --> 01:42:17,784

I'm like, don't tell him he

might be, I couldn't remember.

:

01:42:17,784 --> 01:42:20,214

I'm like, he might be on this

too, because how many times has

:

01:42:20,214 --> 01:42:21,443

he had to do this transaction?

:

01:42:21,454 --> 01:42:25,034

So he's probably used to doing this

because this is part of their, their ML.

:

01:42:25,654 --> 01:42:26,394

So yeah, it?

:

01:42:26,394 --> 01:42:29,184

just, anytime you interact with

someone else, I would just don't trust

:

01:42:29,184 --> 01:42:31,693

anybody you're, you are on your own.

:

01:42:33,629 --> 01:42:34,269

Jason Masek: And you nailed it,

:

01:42:34,269 --> 01:42:34,559

Katie,

:

01:42:34,559 --> 01:42:36,639

with that device of seeing

when they get to the barn

:

01:42:36,639 --> 01:42:40,589

and Kurt Russell's up in the loft

area, seeing all the clothing

:

01:42:40,589 --> 01:42:44,849

and all the artifacts left by,

you know, previous victims.

:

01:42:45,148 --> 01:42:47,279

That's the scariest thing for

me, because I'm thinking, is

:

01:42:47,289 --> 01:42:49,039

this a hills have eyes scenario?

:

01:42:49,039 --> 01:42:54,478

Where, or You can name so many different

horror films that utilize this, but

:

01:42:54,478 --> 01:42:58,619

the simple fact is it always works

when you are stranded in the middle

:

01:42:58,619 --> 01:43:03,349

of nowhere and there's just a group

of randos, random people that their

:

01:43:03,409 --> 01:43:09,129

only goal is to terrorize you, with

maybe they want your money, maybe they

:

01:43:09,139 --> 01:43:12,579

want your clothes, your fancy car,

whatever it might be, maybe they're

:

01:43:12,589 --> 01:43:14,209

just doing it for the thrill of it.

:

01:43:14,228 --> 01:43:18,929

And guess what, in the end you're

dead, scares the hell out of me.

:

01:43:19,309 --> 01:43:21,539

Cause they're just doing it

for the sake of doing it.

:

01:43:22,134 --> 01:43:25,773

And who's going to hold them

accountable when they're literally

:

01:43:25,954 --> 01:43:26,794

in the middle of nowhere.

:

01:43:27,094 --> 01:43:27,484

It's great.

:

01:43:27,484 --> 01:43:28,414

Great premise.

:

01:43:28,424 --> 01:43:29,074

It's always

:

01:43:29,074 --> 01:43:29,434

works.

:

01:43:30,929 --> 01:43:31,629

Katie: it really is.

:

01:43:32,284 --> 01:43:35,314

there were other actors that were

considered for the role, or maybe

:

01:43:35,314 --> 01:43:40,784

tried out for the part, um, of

these people, what do you think?

:

01:43:41,334 --> 01:43:47,094

Dennis Quaid, Bruce Willis, Ed

Harris, Mel Gibson, and Richard Gere.

:

01:43:48,974 --> 01:43:49,874

Jason Masek: Good ones.

:

01:43:49,914 --> 01:43:52,954

I've got my, my two out of that list.

:

01:43:52,954 --> 01:43:55,764

I I was, there's a

:

01:43:56,414 --> 01:43:56,764

in there.

:

01:43:57,034 --> 01:43:57,374

Bill: Okay.

:

01:43:57,414 --> 01:43:57,614

I

:

01:43:58,054 --> 01:43:59,974

Katie: Yeah, I have mine.

:

01:44:00,334 --> 01:44:01,114

I have 1.

:

01:44:01,794 --> 01:44:02,193

Bill: Out of the,

:

01:44:02,504 --> 01:44:03,434

that, okay.

:

01:44:03,794 --> 01:44:05,273

Yeah, he was, he was in my two.

:

01:44:05,534 --> 01:44:07,214

Either Harris or Quaid.

:

01:44:07,409 --> 01:44:07,869

Katie: Okay.

:

01:44:08,574 --> 01:44:09,074

Jason Masek: Me too.

:

01:44:09,379 --> 01:44:09,759

Katie: Quaid.

:

01:44:09,759 --> 01:44:10,489

Yeah, I can see.

:

01:44:10,499 --> 01:44:10,799

Yeah.

:

01:44:10,799 --> 01:44:12,559

I almost, I almost, that's funny.

:

01:44:12,559 --> 01:44:12,869

We're in

:

01:44:12,869 --> 01:44:13,469

alignment.

:

01:44:13,984 --> 01:44:14,924

Jason Masek: Dennis Quaid.

:

01:44:14,984 --> 01:44:17,193

You could make an argument

that he's kind of in

:

01:44:17,273 --> 01:44:18,904

that Kurt

:

01:44:18,934 --> 01:44:20,474

Russell kind

:

01:44:20,474 --> 01:44:21,734

of territory.

:

01:44:21,834 --> 01:44:22,744

Pats where,

:

01:44:23,523 --> 01:44:27,404

uh, very likable leading man.

:

01:44:28,974 --> 01:44:29,174

He can

:

01:44:31,654 --> 01:44:32,834

Bill: Yeah, never really had a

:

01:44:33,324 --> 01:44:35,353

super big hit, but just

:

01:44:36,294 --> 01:44:36,574

kept

:

01:44:36,603 --> 01:44:37,603

Jason Masek: can be an every man

:

01:44:38,219 --> 01:44:38,959

Katie: Solid.

:

01:44:40,584 --> 01:44:40,794

Jason Masek: can

:

01:44:44,824 --> 01:44:48,704

Bill: see, I could see Ed Harris,

though, playing the JT Walsh role, also.

:

01:44:48,714 --> 01:44:50,004

he I, he could, you could almost put

:

01:44:50,074 --> 01:44:50,443

Jason Masek: Ooh,

:

01:44:50,454 --> 01:44:50,844

yeah,

:

01:44:51,064 --> 01:44:51,353

Bill: of those.

:

01:44:51,724 --> 01:44:52,074

yeah,

:

01:44:52,759 --> 01:44:54,029

Katie: I love Ed

:

01:44:54,029 --> 01:44:54,509

Harris.

:

01:44:54,609 --> 01:44:54,978

So,

:

01:44:55,009 --> 01:44:56,029

yeah, I just

:

01:44:56,134 --> 01:44:58,273

Bill: He's got some good, good intensity.

:

01:44:58,294 --> 01:44:58,634

Yeah.

:

01:44:59,244 --> 01:44:59,934

Katie: So J.

:

01:44:59,934 --> 01:45:00,124

T.

:

01:45:00,124 --> 01:45:05,114

Walsh and Kurt Russell have

been in four films together.

:

01:45:05,544 --> 01:45:09,424

This one Backdraft, Executive Decision,

:

01:45:09,454 --> 01:45:10,894

and Tequila Sunrise.

:

01:45:11,603 --> 01:45:13,714

Bill: I totally forgot he

was in Tequila Sunrise.

:

01:45:14,324 --> 01:45:15,154

JT Walsh.

:

01:45:15,564 --> 01:45:17,394

yeah, certainly remember,

yeah, that backdraft.

:

01:45:17,409 --> 01:45:19,589

Exactly.

:

01:45:20,074 --> 01:45:22,834

Jason Masek: Decisions, one of

my fav I, that's a go to for

:

01:45:22,834 --> 01:45:23,154

me.

:

01:45:23,964 --> 01:45:24,254

Another

:

01:45:24,254 --> 01:45:24,634

intense,

:

01:45:24,644 --> 01:45:25,614

great action movie.

:

01:45:26,014 --> 01:45:26,693

Love that one.

:

01:45:28,154 --> 01:45:30,434

But yeah, I mean, great pairing.

:

01:45:31,353 --> 01:45:35,754

Katie: Kurt Russell was just coming

off of, let's see, what movie I, oh, I

:

01:45:35,754 --> 01:45:40,334

think it was Escape from, Escape from

He was just done filming when he started

:

01:45:40,334 --> 01:45:44,634

filming this and so he really didn't,

kind of didn't want to do it, apparently.

:

01:45:44,654 --> 01:45:49,609

So, they made a deal with him it's a Dino

:

01:45:49,624 --> 01:45:50,664

Jason Masek: Laurentiis, yeah.

:

01:45:51,523 --> 01:45:52,353

Katie: production.

:

01:45:54,068 --> 01:45:59,898

He actually like helicoptered Kurt

in and out so that he would only have

:

01:45:59,949 --> 01:46:02,909

a, he would only work from 9am to 3.

:

01:46:02,909 --> 01:46:06,289

30 or 4 and be back home

with his family every day.

:

01:46:06,329 --> 01:46:08,398

That was the deal they made with Kurt

:

01:46:09,009 --> 01:46:09,809

to do the movie.

:

01:46:11,079 --> 01:46:13,478

Bill: In a way, I must think it kind

of helped the movie too, because

:

01:46:13,499 --> 01:46:16,859

everything, except for that basically

one scene when the truck shows,

:

01:46:16,909 --> 01:46:21,148

everything happens in broad daylight and

it's a thriller and you're scared and

:

01:46:21,159 --> 01:46:23,109

usually associate that with nighttime.

:

01:46:23,879 --> 01:46:26,969

But the fact that happens all in

bright, broad daylight and you

:

01:46:26,969 --> 01:46:29,419

still feel like that, I'm like,

Oh, that, that's impressive.

:

01:46:29,789 --> 01:46:30,129

yeah,

:

01:46:31,034 --> 01:46:31,434

Jason Masek: yeah, good

:

01:46:31,434 --> 01:46:31,814

call.

:

01:46:32,204 --> 01:46:32,744

Great call.

:

01:46:34,443 --> 01:46:38,114

Katie: Kurt said this was like the

one of the hardest, let's see, he

:

01:46:38,124 --> 01:46:42,124

says most exhausting, I should say,

film he's ever made stating that

:

01:46:42,414 --> 01:46:45,914

the reason for that is because his

character was in a constant state of

:

01:46:45,914 --> 01:46:48,124

anxiety and how exhausting that is.

:

01:46:48,134 --> 01:46:51,924

Jonathan Mostow's wife, I guess.

:

01:46:51,934 --> 01:46:53,443

So there was a screening.

:

01:46:54,284 --> 01:46:55,824

Yeah, she overheard.

:

01:46:55,853 --> 01:46:56,853

I knew there was something.

:

01:46:56,864 --> 01:46:59,724

There was a screening

of the movie and Mrs.

:

01:46:59,724 --> 01:47:04,574

Mostow was in the bathroom overhearing

like some ladies talking about it and

:

01:47:04,574 --> 01:47:08,574

that it was just so incredibly stressful.

:

01:47:08,974 --> 01:47:10,044

And she was like, great.

:

01:47:10,054 --> 01:47:10,273

That's.

:

01:47:10,704 --> 01:47:13,564

That's good to hear that that's

what we did our job basically

:

01:47:13,564 --> 01:47:14,654

is what her thought was.

:

01:47:14,734 --> 01:47:18,724

It's a thriller, but they gave the

movie a terrible score because they were

:

01:47:19,044 --> 01:47:20,164

Jason Masek: Ah, ha ha ha

:

01:47:21,724 --> 01:47:22,693

Katie: People are idiots is the

:

01:47:22,693 --> 01:47:23,374

point I guess

:

01:47:23,414 --> 01:47:24,374

I was trying to make.

:

01:47:25,784 --> 01:47:28,684

Jason Masek: I can see, I can

see that this nec wouldn't

:

01:47:28,684 --> 01:47:30,804

necessarily be a rewatchable.

:

01:47:30,814 --> 01:47:33,394

You're not just gonna go I

mean, you'd have to give it a

:

01:47:33,394 --> 01:47:34,654

few years, then go back to it.

:

01:47:34,654 --> 01:47:36,124

Like, we did here, which was great.

:

01:47:37,034 --> 01:47:41,904

yeah, I mean, honestly, during the

final scene, or I believe it's actually

:

01:47:41,904 --> 01:47:45,464

when he was playing his Indiana Jones

move on underneath Red's truck when

:

01:47:45,464 --> 01:47:48,443

he was got on board and was underneath

it and then on the side of it.

:

01:47:49,084 --> 01:47:50,634

I caught myself.

:

01:47:51,054 --> 01:47:51,574

Tensed up.

:

01:47:51,584 --> 01:47:52,894

My body was tensed up.

:

01:47:52,994 --> 01:47:53,943

I had to relax.

:

01:47:53,943 --> 01:47:54,824

I had to make myself

:

01:47:54,824 --> 01:47:55,943

relax because I really

:

01:47:55,943 --> 01:47:56,424

got

:

01:47:56,784 --> 01:47:57,234

into it.

:

01:47:57,254 --> 01:47:59,814

It's because you see him hanging on.

:

01:47:59,814 --> 01:48:02,204

It's kind of, I'm going to

make a, another reference here.

:

01:48:02,244 --> 01:48:07,544

Uh, it's Keanu Reeves underneath

the bus in speed when he's using

:

01:48:07,544 --> 01:48:11,564

the screwdriver to, to hang on when

he's underneath and you just kind

:

01:48:11,564 --> 01:48:15,384

of automatically your muscles tense

up because now I'm in the character.

:

01:48:15,384 --> 01:48:17,934

I'm in his shoes again,

going, I got to hold on.

:

01:48:17,934 --> 01:48:18,603

I got to hold on.

:

01:48:18,603 --> 01:48:19,624

If I let go.

:

01:48:20,114 --> 01:48:23,674

I'm roadkill, I'm dead meat, the wheels,

I'm going to go under the wheels.

:

01:48:23,724 --> 01:48:24,984

And it's the worst death pot.

:

01:48:24,994 --> 01:48:31,094

Like I know I'm scenario, so it is

stressful and it's like, okay, I don't

:

01:48:31,284 --> 01:48:32,864

need to see this right away again.

:

01:48:32,904 --> 01:48:34,443

So I can understand people being,

:

01:48:35,824 --> 01:48:36,764

upset by it,

:

01:48:38,603 --> 01:48:38,853

Katie: that's

:

01:48:39,019 --> 01:48:39,469

Bill: I think it's.

:

01:48:39,904 --> 01:48:43,689

Katie: Yep.

:

01:48:43,999 --> 01:48:48,039

Bill: this and thinking, running, you

know, like a side parallel scenarios you

:

01:48:48,039 --> 01:48:49,318

know, asking me what what would you do?

:

01:48:49,318 --> 01:48:51,568

And I'm like, crap, I I'm here.

:

01:48:51,568 --> 01:48:51,829

I am.

:

01:48:51,829 --> 01:48:53,259

I'm probably making all

the wrong decisions.

:

01:48:53,259 --> 01:48:58,228

Also, it, it, it adds that undue

stress also like a scenario that

:

01:48:59,019 --> 01:49:00,109

hopefully it never happens to me.

:

01:49:00,109 --> 01:49:02,509

but you know, you, you run

that scenario all the time.

:

01:49:02,519 --> 01:49:05,019

Like even Jason, I talk

about like movies with kids.

:

01:49:05,019 --> 01:49:06,898

I'm like, okay, when I saw

this movie, I didn't have kids.

:

01:49:06,898 --> 01:49:07,599

Now I have kids.

:

01:49:07,599 --> 01:49:08,209

And now.

:

01:49:08,409 --> 01:49:11,339

You know, the, the stress of thinking

about that from a dance perspective.

:

01:49:12,279 --> 01:49:15,839

so even watching this now being

married and okay, well, what would I

:

01:49:15,839 --> 01:49:21,129

do in this situation gets adds even

more stress on, so I can kind of see

:

01:49:21,129 --> 01:49:23,749

what those ladies were saying, but

I still would have gave it a good

:

01:49:23,749 --> 01:49:24,049

grade.

:

01:49:24,799 --> 01:49:29,398

Katie: You guys bring up a good point

about, and this is what comes up a

:

01:49:29,398 --> 01:49:35,359

lot on our respective shows is that

our perspective of watching a show

:

01:49:35,359 --> 01:49:38,779

when we were a kid and then we have

these fond memories of how awesome

:

01:49:38,779 --> 01:49:42,019

it was and then what you watch it

as an adult and you're like, you

:

01:49:42,029 --> 01:49:43,909

see it from a completely different angle.

:

01:49:44,304 --> 01:49:44,554

Bill: Yeah.

:

01:49:44,554 --> 01:49:48,664

Expect, you know, just even the top

of this episode, just, you know,

:

01:49:48,664 --> 01:49:51,773

you're talking about the music and

there it was that that's in your, your

:

01:49:51,773 --> 01:49:55,554

wheelhouse for us, we, you know, we

were a little past that at that point,

:

01:49:55,564 --> 01:49:58,273

that wasn't necessarily the stuff we

were listening to at the time, but

:

01:49:58,273 --> 01:49:59,974

for you, it was, it was a big deal.

:

01:49:59,984 --> 01:50:01,664

That's what you and your

friends were listening to.

:

01:50:02,273 --> 01:50:06,114

You know, we were still trying

to carry over stuff from before.

:

01:50:06,523 --> 01:50:07,164

So Yeah,

:

01:50:07,164 --> 01:50:08,773

it's it's always amazing.

:

01:50:08,773 --> 01:50:09,504

We talk about like.

:

01:50:10,614 --> 01:50:14,103

How impactful a movie can be because

of the scenario in which you saw it on.

:

01:50:14,124 --> 01:50:15,023

Did you see it in the theater?

:

01:50:15,023 --> 01:50:17,644

Did you rent it with some

friends or, you know, how old

:

01:50:17,814 --> 01:50:19,284

were you when, when you saw it?

:

01:50:19,304 --> 01:50:22,434

Cause you, you know, you think

about movies that you like that

:

01:50:22,443 --> 01:50:24,614

other people, you know, Oh,

I didn't, I didn't like that.

:

01:50:24,624 --> 01:50:28,154

But then, you know, maybe they

were older or, you know, it just

:

01:50:29,114 --> 01:50:29,504

yeah

:

01:50:29,574 --> 01:50:33,034

there's just so many factors going into

the movie experience that you do not

:

01:50:33,054 --> 01:50:36,023

think about until maybe you revisit.

:

01:50:36,259 --> 01:50:38,818

You know, go back and watch

it so many years later.

:

01:50:38,818 --> 01:50:39,648

You're like, Oh, okay.

:

01:50:39,669 --> 01:50:43,159

Now I get why people like this movie

or why people didn't like this movie.

:

01:50:43,589 --> 01:50:46,478

So yeah, this, this definitely

falls into that category.

:

01:50:46,489 --> 01:50:49,978

How I had a different feeling watching

it this time than when I did the first

:

01:50:49,978 --> 01:50:53,279

time, both times I liked it, but yeah,

there was, there was definitely, it,

:

01:50:53,499 --> 01:50:54,839

it brought about different emotions.

:

01:50:55,254 --> 01:50:58,174

Katie: The last bit of trivia that I

have is that apparently there was a

:

01:50:58,184 --> 01:51:02,664

cut scene where this in the script,

there's a, there's a scene after the

:

01:51:02,664 --> 01:51:08,704

final scene with Jeff and Amy back

at the farm talking to the FBI and

:

01:51:08,704 --> 01:51:11,114

the film finishes with a line by Amy.

:

01:51:11,364 --> 01:51:14,064

She says, next time we fly.

:

01:51:14,674 --> 01:51:17,534

And it was dropped because.

:

01:51:18,409 --> 01:51:23,609

It was deemed out of place, like

maybe a bit too comedic or something.

:

01:51:23,779 --> 01:51:25,409

Bill: I would agree

with that, leave it out.

:

01:51:27,734 --> 01:51:33,704

Jason Masek: I Totally 100 percent

agree when this movie ends with them

:

01:51:33,714 --> 01:51:39,273

holding one another after the entire

Truck slash trucks were truck on

:

01:51:39,284 --> 01:51:43,914

truck incident I guess you could say

at the end on the bridge and It kind

:

01:51:43,914 --> 01:51:47,834

of the camera is pulling out as I

knew that the movie was ending right

:

01:51:47,834 --> 01:51:52,429

then And was like, Stop right here.

:

01:51:52,629 --> 01:51:52,999

End it.

:

01:51:53,148 --> 01:51:53,689

That's it.

:

01:51:54,289 --> 01:51:54,829

That's it.

:

01:51:55,139 --> 01:51:55,869

That's all you get.

:

01:51:55,879 --> 01:51:56,349

That's all

:

01:51:56,349 --> 01:51:56,809

you need.

:

01:51:56,818 --> 01:51:57,409

We're in,

:

01:51:57,419 --> 01:51:58,079

we're out.

:

01:51:58,419 --> 01:51:59,809

And that was a thrill ride.

:

01:51:59,969 --> 01:52:02,029

The rollercoaster came to a stop.

:

01:52:02,289 --> 01:52:02,829

We're done.

:

01:52:02,909 --> 01:52:03,769

Get off the ride.

:

01:52:04,239 --> 01:52:05,109

Perfection.

:

01:52:05,478 --> 01:52:06,839

I was like, thank you.

:

01:52:07,619 --> 01:52:08,349

what we need.

:

01:52:08,709 --> 01:52:10,059

We didn't need to know.

:

01:52:10,389 --> 01:52:14,689

The backstory of these characters,

all their, their lives, and all

:

01:52:14,689 --> 01:52:17,789

these intricate things about

their relationship or whatnot.

:

01:52:17,799 --> 01:52:19,699

That's, the, these filmmakers

:

01:52:19,709 --> 01:52:21,109

knew what this movie was,

:

01:52:21,219 --> 01:52:21,489

what

:

01:52:21,499 --> 01:52:23,529

genre it was, what it was about, and

:

01:52:23,529 --> 01:52:24,739

they killed it, they nailed it.

:

01:52:25,299 --> 01:52:25,779

And,

:

01:52:26,639 --> 01:52:27,978

uh, it, it's just

:

01:52:28,039 --> 01:52:30,478

it's really smart with the great

performances, again, the less

:

01:52:34,419 --> 01:52:38,699

Bill: Yeah, cause you know, you do that

fist pump when you see Red's demise, I

:

01:52:38,699 --> 01:52:40,629

mean, it's, it's excessive, but yeah.

:

01:52:40,629 --> 01:52:42,249

that's, that's how you want to leave Yeah.

:

01:52:42,249 --> 01:52:45,279

they got that bastard, and then you

think about it holy crap, they dropped

:

01:52:45,279 --> 01:52:47,279

the truck on him, that's, that's,

:

01:52:47,359 --> 01:52:49,139

freaking, that's not a way I want to go.

:

01:52:50,576 --> 01:52:53,696

Katie: You know, Jason, you saying

that we didn't need their backstory

:

01:52:53,696 --> 01:52:57,326

and all that is so interesting that

you say that because I was reading that

:

01:52:57,326 --> 01:53:02,751

originally They did have a whole bit

I don't know if it was a scene or two

:

01:53:02,761 --> 01:53:06,481

of their backstory and they're like,

no, we just start with them in the car.

:

01:53:06,591 --> 01:53:07,341

We don't need it.

:

01:53:07,731 --> 01:53:08,611

So yeah.

:

01:53:08,681 --> 01:53:09,911

Jason Masek: it's an interesting thing.

:

01:53:10,031 --> 01:53:10,210

You

:

01:53:10,210 --> 01:53:14,380

know, Bill and I have done our share

of writing, and when you're doing a

:

01:53:14,380 --> 01:53:18,311

story like this, you just, you think

about how does it serve the story.

:

01:53:19,451 --> 01:53:20,050

And

:

01:53:20,391 --> 01:53:23,251

I personally, I love character background.

:

01:53:23,371 --> 01:53:23,751

I love

:

01:53:23,761 --> 01:53:24,061

world

:

01:53:24,071 --> 01:53:24,581

building.

:

01:53:24,691 --> 01:53:25,591

I like to get into it.

:

01:53:25,671 --> 01:53:30,171

I'm big into it because for me, it

fills it out even more so that I know

:

01:53:30,171 --> 01:53:34,300

exactly why characters are making the

choices they're making, because I have

:

01:53:34,300 --> 01:53:36,771

a full life developed and written.

:

01:53:37,401 --> 01:53:39,431

Do we need to know that as an audience?

:

01:53:39,591 --> 01:53:42,741

No, I know someone like Aaron

Sorkin, not like a huge fan

:

01:53:42,821 --> 01:53:44,641

that I've heard, but I get it.

:

01:53:44,641 --> 01:53:45,001

I get it.

:

01:53:45,041 --> 01:53:46,921

I need to do that work for myself.

:

01:53:47,991 --> 01:53:50,141

That's my own propensity for that.

:

01:53:50,241 --> 01:53:54,371

But for this type of story, it

doesn't serve the story in any way

:

01:53:54,380 --> 01:53:56,821

versus that save that for the TV

:

01:53:56,821 --> 01:53:58,541

show for breakdown,

:

01:53:58,550 --> 01:53:59,841

the Netflix series.

:

01:54:00,541 --> 01:54:00,661

you

:

01:54:00,661 --> 01:54:01,171

want to get to

:

01:54:01,171 --> 01:54:02,911

know, you know, if

:

01:54:02,921 --> 01:54:06,721

you want to really become invested

in their marriage and thus, you

:

01:54:06,721 --> 01:54:08,481

know, that affects their choices.

:

01:54:08,511 --> 01:54:10,831

They make as to if.

:

01:54:11,231 --> 01:54:13,151

You know, they had, they

really had marital problems.

:

01:54:13,151 --> 01:54:13,481

They do

:

01:54:13,481 --> 01:54:14,281

touch upon that.

:

01:54:14,281 --> 01:54:15,081

That's, I think

:

01:54:15,081 --> 01:54:15,401

JT

:

01:54:15,421 --> 01:54:16,481

Walsh brings it up, right?

:

01:54:16,601 --> 01:54:17,281

or no, no.

:

01:54:17,425 --> 01:54:18,046

Sheriff does.

:

01:54:18,046 --> 01:54:19,335

Did you have an argument in your wife?

:

01:54:19,335 --> 01:54:22,096

And then immediately it was like, what

does that have anything to do with it?

:

01:54:25,331 --> 01:54:25,781

Katie: Mm hmm.

:

01:54:26,251 --> 01:54:26,630

Yeah.

:

01:54:26,796 --> 01:54:28,746

Bill: That, that's a ringing

endorsement for the movie.

:

01:54:28,746 --> 01:54:30,766

If Jason says he doesn't

need, more backstory,

:

01:54:31,626 --> 01:54:31,956

Jason Masek: yeah.

:

01:54:32,656 --> 01:54:34,026

Bill: that, that means this movie works

:

01:54:34,026 --> 01:54:36,696

Jason Masek: and I have to say any

movie that starts with a couple in a

:

01:54:36,696 --> 01:54:42,446

car, uh, we did a short film ourselves

called desolate road that deals with

:

01:54:42,446 --> 01:54:45,726

this and, and what did they talk about

and how do we make it interesting?

:

01:54:45,896 --> 01:54:49,366

One of my favorites the opening

of a film called Jeepers Creepers.

:

01:54:50,106 --> 01:54:52,236

a young brother and sister in a car.

:

01:54:52,376 --> 01:54:55,786

And we get a little bit of their,

we get to know them like, Oh, okay.

:

01:54:55,916 --> 01:54:56,755

Brother and sister.

:

01:54:56,816 --> 01:54:57,396

Okay.

:

01:54:57,726 --> 01:54:58,806

This is their relationship.

:

01:54:58,846 --> 01:55:02,396

They may have a little antagonistic

moment here or there, but they love one

:

01:55:02,396 --> 01:55:03,746

another, they care about each other.

:

01:55:04,031 --> 01:55:04,661

That's it.

:

01:55:04,741 --> 01:55:08,111

And it gets right to the horror

element within five minutes.

:

01:55:08,691 --> 01:55:10,891

boom, we're in, that's

what this movie is about.

:

01:55:11,201 --> 01:55:14,771

I love movies and that

do get the setup, right.

:

01:55:15,491 --> 01:55:16,441

Let's, you know, and

:

01:55:16,671 --> 01:55:16,901

get

:

01:55:16,921 --> 01:55:19,001

to get to the action if that's what

:

01:55:19,001 --> 01:55:19,501

it's supposed to

:

01:55:19,501 --> 01:55:19,741

be.

:

01:55:21,186 --> 01:55:21,916

Katie: I love that.

:

01:55:22,136 --> 01:55:23,936

That's good insight.

:

01:55:23,966 --> 01:55:28,681

And to your point, Bill, an

endorsement from two filmmakers.

:

01:55:28,731 --> 01:55:32,991

And I, so to that point I want

you guys to tell us where we can

:

01:55:32,991 --> 01:55:35,221

nutshell.
